Step right up folks, come one, come all, hear ye hear ye and other outdated modes of engaging in public announcement. It’s the time of the fantasy football season – namely the pre-pre-season – where we here at Razzball open up our Razzball Commenter Leagues. Now before you go dashing off to our old friends at ESPN, let me loop you in. We ain’t doing that this year. For 2012, we’re doing our leagues through yahoo fantasy football and we’re gonna use their default settings for league set-up. That means every league will be 10 team, it’ll be head-to-head with a snake draft and your teams will be 1QB, 3WR, 2RB, 1TE, 1K, 1DEF, and 6 bench spots. The one thing that WON’T be default is that we will set our leagues to public, either for adulation or humiliation, depending on how well you perform. All that said, we’re looking for a few good commishes to man (or woman) these leagues and to use that yahoo link to go open one up. Once you have set it up, you will post the league name and League ID in the comments and you will set the password to Razzball. No, you don’t have to bold the password, I just did that to make it be noted. As league organizer it will be your job to set up the league identically to the others and to make sure everyone finishes their vegetables before going to play. Yes, even the brussel sprouts.
Our goal is to have a bunch of leagues and crown a winner from each, then we’re going to crown ONE winner from all of the winners and if that guy/girl is lucky, we’ll make it be Dennis Green doing said crowning. We’ll determine that capitalized one winner from the previous sentence by using a super-secret formula Rudy learned while working as a Russian scientist in a James Bond film. All that to say, if you are wondering how it works, don’t ask, we might have to kill you if you gained the knowledge. Just realize it takes each team’s points and multiplies it against a ‘league competitiveness factor’, which is similar to ‘Fear Factor’ minus Joe Rogan. At least that’s what I’ve come to think. Anywho, the goal is for us to create as many leagues as possible. If we find we have too many leagues but not enough players, we’ll do our best push-up bra impersonation and smoosh together to form less leagues but we all know you want to play so go to it!
Ok, so I know you all would do it just for the glory but we do have a grand prize for the big time Razzball winner this year. This year, we decided to work with SayWhat?! Custom Shirts to bring you a shirt…nah, that wouldn’t be cool for a master champion. Friends, let’s think about what being a true football fan means. It’s Sunday, all your friends are over and it’s frickin freezin outside but you have to go get that 24 case in the fridge out in the garage. It is your duty to make your Sunday party rock so we thought to ourselves, what better way to help you strut your football stuff than giving the number one team a RCL 2012 Champion jump suit. Now instead of having that embarrassing ‘JUICY’ across your backside, you can stroll to the 7-11 for your corn dog and slurpee in style as Razzball royalty. Plus, the hoodie will feature not only what you see in the pic but your team name on the front as well as your winning schedule on the back. So that said, make sure and choose your team name wisely as you may not want to go out with the ‘Sh@!#-Eating F’ing F’ers’ across your chest (for the kids reading that, it stands for ‘Shark-Eating Farting Farters’; I know, grown-ups are weird). Thankfully, we have created a fantasy football team name generator to save you from this type of social faux pas. Even if you don’t join us for a league, I suggest you put that tool to use. And speaking of tools, I mentioned it last week and feel the need to mention it again. Go check out the CheatSheetWizard care of the FantasyPros. There is so much cool going on in that link that I’d have to start a new post to explain it so I suggest you just click when you’re done having fun with us.

The duties of the organizer will be to accept 9 other people into the league they set up here via yahoo, keep everything as default EXCEPT FOR setting the league to public. Not sure if I’m ready to step up to the RCL yet. I think I have to spend another year in AAA earning my stripes.
On to my question, how do you value draft picks? I’m in a 10-team redraft league. This is the first year our league has allowed the trading of draft picks and I’m having a hard time determining what each pick is truly worth. For example, I thought I could trade my #12, 2nd round pick, for a later pick in the 2nd round and come away with another pick or two. But what should I be asking for in return? Should I reasonably be expecting a 3rd or 4th rounder? Or more picks?
And if I were to go through with this, is it worth it?
That is a loaded question that has more to do with other factors – what players will be available in the draft, what the other managers needs are, etc – than an issue of value. A draft pick in terms of value can be shown at face value. Pick #19 more valuable than pick #25. Typically, draft picks are part of a trade that involves players. Overall, the value of any trade is what are you going to get from it so it’s really hard for me to say since I don’t know what you’re targeting by trading your second round pick.
That said, don’t cut yourself short. If you’d like to play this crazy little game with us, feel free to hop in!

DMC/AJ are injury risks so it depends on how much you want to gamble. The gambler in me says Vick, the person who wants to protect says Bradshaw or Romo. Do you know what QBs will be kept going into the draft or any idea? QB is deep this year but if people are clearing out the top 10, it makes keeping one of yours a near must.
@Sky, Really nobody keeps QB’s outside of Brees, Cam and Rodgers. I grabbed Romo in the 12th round last year and RB’s then receivers are always the first to go. Im almost thinking keep Bradshaw and then get Vick later in the draft. We have a util spot so the 3rd RB is always nice.

I’m in Deez Razztastic Nuts. Think you’d ever do something like this for PPR? Haven’t played in a standard league in three years so this will be an adjustment. PPR provides so many more strategic options for the creative amongst us.

@Sky, I second DaveyBoy’s suggestion. My impression is that more and more leagues are adopting PPR settings of some sort, whether it be staggered/weighted between WR/TE/RB, straight .5 or 1 point, or some other variation. Like using Holds in baseball, it opens up a whole bunch of secondary receivers who don’t necessarily rack up major yardage or score TDs, and makes the waiver wire much more interesting. Neither here nor there, but all the leagues I commish that are not volunteer jobs like this one and one I do for the Fantasy Football Librarian have a PPR component.
Of course, all my private leagues have an IDP component. I’m not suggesting that here, but if anyone is interested in testing out an IDP league, I usually have an opening or two in my free leagues.

Hey Carter, you’re up there. Hop into the forums and promote as well so you get a full league. Make sure it’s set to public too. I know a lot of leagues are having issues with that step. Thanks!
Hey Sky, I just changed the draft time in my league so that it would be easier for people on the east coast. So you might want to change the draft time up there. The draft day is still the 1st of September, but the draft time was changed to 5:30 pacific time.
Cool, I fixed it. I’d strongly encourage you to post in the forums here about it as a Razzball league. You’d be surprised how many people are Razzball forum only that might like to join.
Are there no more open leagues?
If the last league on the list is full, then it looks like it. Sorry about that, we’ve been trying to get our leagues full for about a month now.
@Sky, Well the only one that had been open for about 2 weeks was not open to the public and then when I was told that it was fixed and there was another open league (which still appears as open despite the draft being 2 days ago) when I went to join a day later it was already full. Is there a way that I could be notified when/if another one opens asap? I would be grateful.
Sorry about all that Dan, I don’t believe we have any more open. With responding to comments here/on the forums and trying to edit/get the content up I’m relying on the people who are creating the leagues to follow the instructions. I wish I knew of another league opening but with the season starting tomorrow, I don’t think we’re going to be able to get you in. I really do apologize and wish I had something else I could say. Next year, I’m going to get you to open a league so that we know we got you in. Cool?
The Yahoo default waiver setting is Game time – Tuesday (11:59pm pst), but for some reason, in our league, Morris was available at 11:59pm Monday. Is that allowable or am I correct in exercising my commish rights and reversing the free agent transaction? League ID# 634876.
That’s really weird. I’m pretty sure the default is Sunday-Tuesday and the waiver time is set to 3 days. I think you have to for fairness of the league. Can you place Morris on waivers until tomorrow if you do that?
@Sky, oh the waiver time in our league is 2 days for some reason…that may be the reason why. I will fix that. Morris is on waivers until 11:59 tonight.
Interesting. Was he dropped on Sunday mid-way through the day? I’m trying to fathom how the system could’ve hiccuped because he should’ve been up thru Tuesday with that initial waiver rule.

No he was not rostered. Can you confirm that the waiver time is 3 days? I’m checking all my other yahoo leagues and they all have 2 days.
I could but I’m looking at your league and other leagues and seeing the appropriate date of September 12th for when you can get ahold of a guy so I don’t know what the deuce is going on.
What’s the drop/add history on Morris? Was he initially drafted?
Alright, if he was an FA grab for the first time on Monday night/Tuesday morning, I’m gonna have to say glitch for now because all the other players were set for Sept 12th in your league and he should’ve been too. If it happens again with either you or another league, we’ll do some further investigation but so far, I haven’t heard anything about this issue outside of this incident.
