Gentlemen and four Ladies,

I know what you’re all thinking, “Who is this man-child showing off his above-average arsenal of hair products? Is this Grey from the past?” Now that’s humorous, and I’m not talking about my arm bone. That’d be humerus! Why would I write about that in the Football section of Razzball? I wouldn’t. Grey wrote about that on WebMD though, so you never know! I digress.

I’m here to introduce the 2014 Razzball Fantasy Football War Room. Get excited! I’ll preface my explanation with an apology for not getting this to the readers sooner. The Fantasy Football War Room was inspired by the one-and-only Fantasy Baseball War Room. It’s a great tool that I’ve used over the last few years to dominate my drafts. While developing my personal draft spreadsheet for football, I realized I could easily format it for use by the masses. There are features I hope to add in the future, but for the sake of time, I wanted to release the War Room while there was still an opportunity for Razzballers to use it!

So, let’s get down to brass tacks. Here is a brief rundown of what you’re getting in the 2014 Razzball Fantasy Football War Room:

    •  “User Input” feature enables customizable league sizes, roster settings, flex settings, and PPR settings.
    •  “War Room” tab summarizes the number of players taken by each team, and ranks each team by position.
    •  “Cheat Sheet” displays players in order of the 2014 Razzball Rankings. *Use this during the draft!*
    • “Projections” tab is a full display of the 2014 Razzball Projections, for those who want more in-depth information.
    • “Tiers” allow for a snapshot view of Jay’s positional rankings.

Please note this tidbit from Jay about his rankings: “These rankings are not based on where you should draft these players, only a marker of where I see in-season and end of year value. Use them with your ADP list to identify value, or as a wonderful side to potato salad. Probably needs more salt.” I chuckled.

The spreadsheet is not locked, so if you’re an Ex(cel)pert, you can further customize this worksheet as needed. While the War Room is an excellent in-draft tool, I’ve found that a lot of value can come from it post-draft as well. Going back through the draft picks and assigning only the anticipated starters to each team can provide an even more accurate analysis of the league after draft day.

Click below to download the War Room. Please read throught the “Notes” tab first for instructions on how to get started.

I’ve attempted to eliminate the bugs, but if something comes up, please feel free to post your questions here or tweet me @Nicolas_Kern.

Good luck, and #dominateyourdraft!

P.S. There’s still time to join @Nick_Capozzi on the #32in32in32 tour! So get out there!

Nice job man! Finally broke my DK h2h cold streak. Are we battling again tonight?

    • Nico

      (link)

@ralph lifshitz: Thanks! I wish I had more time to get some better features in there, but if I did that, it would have had to wait until next year.

I think I caught your cold(streak)! I would be honored.

  2. Brian says:
    (link)

What is your opinion of the wide reciever in Jacsonville that is making a lot of noise Allen Hurns is he just a preseason come and go type or will he continue getting a lot of targets ?

    • Nico

      Nico says:
      (link)

@Brian: Right now he’s listed as the 4th WR on the depth chart, and based on his preseason, he looks like he’ll make the team. You just have to wonder what happens as some of these WR’s get healthy i.e. Robinson, Sanders, etc. There’s a lot of receiving talent in JAX, and I can see Bradley going with the hot hand to start the season, but he could also get lost in the talent there. You could grab him as a deep league, late round flyer, but remember, it’s still preseason.

  3. Brion says:
    (link)

I have both Gronkowski and Reed at TE. Do you think I need to pick up Garrett Graham or Fleener for a week or two?
Also I have Welker. Is he going to play this year? I could drop a Defense for another TE. Lastly, would you play Brady or Griffin III this week? Thanks for the help!

    • Nico

      Nico says:
      (link)

@Brion: I think there’s a chance both aren’t healthy for Week 1, so definitely cover your toosh! If those are the best two TE’s out there, I’d go Graham, but it wouldn’t make me smile.

Welker is a total question mark right now. I would assume for now he’s out the first few weeks and look for a replacement.

Brady/RG3 a toss up. Go with your gut!

  4. mcBlunty says:
    (link)

asked this question to Jay but like to hear differing opinions, long term keeper league, i kept brady, alfred, jimmy graham and gronk, its a full ppr, i also traded away a bunch of early draft picks year to make a run for the title, didn’t pan out and now i am sort of paying the price at least in terms of my WR who are currently

    m colston
    ruben randle
    justin hunter
    markus wheaton
    marvin jones

so you can see what i am saying about weak, potential upside but no sure things. I currently have offers on the table for both gronk and graham

B Marshall and C Clay for Graham
R Wayne and Ben Tate for Gronk (kid said he would add in another mid level player if needed)

would you do either of these trades, both of these trades, or ride the 2 headed best of Gronk and Graham

    thanks, love the site

    • Nico

      Nico says:
      (link)

@mcBlunty: Since I read all of Jay’s masterpieces, I’ll assume we have similar answers, but I guess you’ll have to let me know.

Without knowing your league settings, I’d say if you could get a starting WR and RB for Gronk, when he’s currently questionable for Week 1, pull the trigger. You have the best TE in the league, and you’re potentially upgrading two positions. I’d do the trade like that, but if he’s going to throw in something else, let him! Thanks!

      • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
        (link)

@Nico: unless your waivers are bare of backup TE have clay guy replace clay with WR of similar value. unless of course you need a RB, then go wayne/tate.

  5. Lobster says:
    (link)

Wow, this is a nice tool to have. I recommend adding data validation to the Owner column on the Cheat Sheet so that we can have nice drop-down menus when filling in draft results. Would save some time =)

    • Nico

      Nico says:
      (link)

@Lobster: Hey Lobster, thanks for the heads up. It was there originally. It must have gotten lost in translation. We’ll get it fixed.

  6. Ron says:

    L. Bell is missing from the rankings tab!

    • Nico

      Nico says:
      (link)

@Ron: Thanks for the info Ron. I’ve run a few of my drafts with this, but don’t want to touch Bell, so he slipped through the cracks when troubleshooting.

@Ron: The apostrophe was the culprit! Thanks agian.

  7. MooseOutFront says:
    (link)

    Thanks for this!

Just to clarify player entry, there is no dropdown under the owner column for each player, but if you type the team letter then the war room area updates correctly.

    • Nico

      Nico says:
      (link)

@MooseOutFront: Thanks, Moose. I’m looking into why the dropdowns aren’t working now. We’ll fix it for you guys and get it working!

  8. KD says:
    (link)

I have 3 first rounders in a 12 team league (lot of moves last season). I pick 2, 6, and 11. I also have gronk as a keeper. Really debating taking graham at 6 (assuming top 5 rbs are gone) and grabing a receiver at 11. Any thoughts?

    • Nico

      Nico says:
      (link)

@KD: Wow. Looks like you did some good work in the offseason! I’m not sure what your roster settings are, but I don’t think Graham is a bad pick there, if you have the opportunity to get top talents with your other 2 picks. Although, if Calvin Johnson or Lacy are sitting there at 6, I really like the value.

      • KD says:
        (link)

@Nico: ha well it was mostly because my team tanked so bad last season that I spent the entire year trying to get extra picks! Thanks for the input!

  9. KoolKeith14 says:

Having problems with this spreadsheet. After I adjust the data in “user input” (#of teams, Positions, Team Names, etc.) I try to add players to my team via “Rankings Cheat Sheet”. but it is to no avail. The file that I downloaded does not allow me to do this.

Your instructions say, “Under the “Owner” column, use the drop down menu to assign a player to a particular team.” I can type my team name in the field, But there is no “owner names” listed in the drop down menu. And I can only sort the column (A-Z, Z-A, etc.) nothing more

I have some needs at RB.
I have L. bell, Alfred Morris, Sankey, b Pierce, and Shonn Greene.
Do I drop Kenny Britt for Andre Williams?
I have mega, k. allen, Michael Floyd, and Terrance Williams at WR.
    Thanks

@DomMattingly: Bell/Morris isn’t an awful tandem. Without knowing your league roster settings, I’d say Williams isn’t going to solve your problems. Not a huge fan of the G-men’s offense this year. But, if you’re looking for an upside flyer, Williams could be that guy.

    Brady,Wilson
    Lacy,Vereen,Fred Jax,Ingram,Moreno
    Demaryius,Jeffrey,Keenan Allen,Decker,and josh Gordon
    Cameron and Ertz
    saints DST
    Henry kicker
    Thoughts??
    Thanks

    • Nico

      Nico says:
      (link)

@Steve: Lacy fell to 7, huh? Nice! Team looks good, WR heavy I’d say. I’m not a huge fan of Vereen being your 2nd RB, but I’m not sure if you have to play him based on your roster settings. I’m hearing marginal things about Henery, and there might be a better DST out there than the Saints, but you can consider streaming those.

  14. Ron says:
    (link)

How would you grade this team in a 12-team .5PPR 2 keeper league?

    QB – Rodgers
    RB – Charles
    WR – Megatron
    WR – Cruz
    RB/WR – Stacy
    TE/WR – Crabtree
    DEF – Bengals
    K – Dawson

    BN – Cameron (TE)
    BN – Colston (WR)
    BN – L. Miller (RB)
    BN – Cooks (WR)
    BN – Baldwin (WR)
    BN – C. Hyde (RB)
    BN – T. West (RB)
    BN – Wheaton (WR)

    • Nico

      Nico says:
      (link)

@Ron: I like it a lot. Two 1st rounders in Megatron and Charles, with a top 3 QB. Nice work!

  15. PPR Heavy says:
    (link)

Nico, this is awesome – thank you! On the “Ranking – Cheat Sheet” tab, is it possible to configure it to order the “Rank” in Column A for 1.0 PPR? The default order for column A is for standard leagues.

I thought an easy fix would be to simply sort the PPR column, but that ends up ranking the QBs heavy at the top. If I were to deselect QBs, would the RB/WR/TE rankings sorted through Column W accomplish the same thing?

Thanks and sorry if I am just missing the obvious technical solution for my question.

    • Nico

      Nico says:
      (link)

@PPR Heavy: Appreciate the kind words. At this point, there isn’t an easy way to sort using PPR Rankings. I wanted to incorporate this feature, but I didn’t have enough time to see it through. My suggestion would be to use the “Rank” column as a reference, and keep an eye on the “1.0 PPR” tab to compare guys ranked in similar areas/rounds. If I have the time, I may try and make this update before the weekend is over.

    • Nico

      Nico says:

@PPR Heavy: And don’t forget to check for the updated spreadsheet. It’s live now! All the bugs worked out!

  16. Matty Ice Bags says:
    (link)

What are your thoughts on me getting Joque Bell in the 5th round as my 2nd running back of a 12 team 0.5 PPR redraft league?

    • Matty Ice Bags says:
      (link)

      @Matty Ice Bags: We play with 1 QB/2 RB/3 WR/1 TE/1 Flex and I went WR/RB/WR/WR in the first 4 rounds.

      • Nico

        Nico says:
        (link)

@Matty Ice Bags: I like Bell there with the WR value you’re getting in 3 of the first 4 rounds. If you went 2 RB/WR over the first 4, I’d probably look Mathews bc you’d be set at RB, and I like his upside, but he holds more risk. I think Bell has a high floor with potential for upside.

Nico, one of the things after using these spreadsheets I felt it needed was keyboard shortcuts to quickly draft players or fix an error drafting. Here is my sheet. There is much more polish to your war room but I hope that maybe some of my work here you might incorporate into your war room for ease of use and due to dynamic references simple updating of projections.
