Don't be shellfish...Tweet about this on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on Google+Share on Reddit

Some things gotta hurt more then others.  Like when you’re at the club and all the girls keep passing you up left and right at the bar and then finally, when all the hot guys are gone and you’re left there competing against the doofy looking guy with the Bill Gates haircut and glasses who’s wearing a sweater vest and you say to yourself ‘man, the next girl’s just gotta go my way’.  Then she steps up to the proverbial plate and you go to take a proverbial swing and she heads off with the proverbial nerd (I don’t think I’m using proverbial right anymore now), you start to question yourself.  You start having a life crisis moment where you begin to question the order of things and how they’re supposed to go.  Not a great time to get existential when Skrillex is blasting into your ears and you’re 5 Mai Thais in (hint: next time don’t order a mai thai).  Well, if that felt lonely just ask yourself how Jonathan Dwyer feels after getting cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday.  Despite the fact that Le’Veon Bell isn’t ready to go to start the season, the Steelers were willing to cut loose the big back, citing lack of commitment to the game was a determining factor.  Sigh, if only we who drafted him as bench RBs knew that he didn’t actually like playing the game in the first place, we would’ve never drafted him.  Yes, it was a slow news weekend to make this the lead but, uh, watcha expectin?  Like, there were no NFL games bro.  So now that we’ve covered Dwyer, let’s take a look at the remaining pieces of scant info we could glean from this final weekend before 2013 Fantasy Football takes the reigns…

Isaac Redman – Will be the lead back until Bell comes back and may work his way into a role if he proves himself over the first few weeks in Le’Veon’s stead.  Given how he ran last year, I’ve got my doubts but if you’re scrambling to own a starting back it looks like Redman is putting down the mic and the blunt and going onto the field.

Tim Tebow – Cut by the Pats, to no one’s surprise.  Well, except for Skip Bayless.  Who’s watching First Take on Monday for his reaction?!?  Yeah, me neither.

Vince Young – Cut by the Packers, also to no one’s extreme surprise.  That’s the third Dream Team for Vince Young in three years.  Here’s to Jacksonville making their claim as the 4th.

Heath Miller – Was removed from the PUP list on Saturday, which means he doesn’t have to wait 6 weeks before he can play again.  This is both good and bad news for his owners.  On one hand, it means he’ll be healthy enough to play soon.  On the other hand, it’s uncertain when that will be and he’ll take up a roster spot in the interim.  Here’s to a healthy Heathy for his owners very soon.

Rob Gronkowski – Also won’t start the year on the PUP list which simply means he’s still on track for a late September return which has been said everywhere and anywhere for seemingly forever.  He might be able to start week 3, leading for many owners to have their smacktalk for then be ‘Sorry For Partying’ because we’re all trite and unoriginal in our nature.

Lance Ball – Another bold name, another cut.  This one’s not surprising given they already have Knowshon, Montee & Ronnie.  This move was pretty much about money, both the savings on salary and ‘Ball’ jerseys.

Robert Meachem – Cut by the Chargers and will still make $5 million this season.  Man, I wish I could get cut from my day job and still get paid $5 mil.  Sky’s Boss ‘Sky, we’re gonna have to let you go.  Here’s a cool $5 mil for being terrible and all the troubles you caused us just to go away’.  Done and done, boss.  Done and done…from a Fantasy perspective, Keenan Allen gets a major boost in terms of interest with DX out for the year.  Good what-if pick up at this point, especially in deepish leagues.

D Grades On Yahoo Drafts – I now have 3 of them.  Granted, one was a D+ but still, a failing grade is a failing grade.  My third one was in a friends league that I didn’t care about on Saturday morning.  I literally drafted exactly how I say not to and took Jimmy Graham in the 2nd just for S’s and G’s.  Maybe that’s why it got the ‘+’.  Whatever, Yahoo profs.  Hey, teachers, leave us kids alone!

    Sky,

Yahoo grades are the most asinine things ever.

A guy in 1 of my leagues w Brees, and a WR set of Bowe, Nicks, and Antonio Brown, RB set of Spiller and MJD with Bell on the bench and Roesthelsbergererer on the bench got an A-

    Laughable and comedic.

Draft grades told me I drafted one of the best RB groups in the league, but that it was below league average :(

I guess “top 10″ is something to strive for in a 10 teamer.

So I like my team but I’m soft at QB in my 14 team PPR

    C. Palmer
    B. Wheedon
    A. Morris
    M. Forte
    L. Miller
    M. Ball
    K. Moreno
    B. pierce
    R. White
    Ant Brown
    Cecil Shorts
    K Thompkins
    C Givins
    A Roberts

Should I keep Wheeden or get EJ? And should I get Julius Thomas on waiver as well

That’s not a bad team for a 14 team, 1 QB league. Manuel’s interesting but it might be a lateral move. I actually don’t mind Weeden this year and I like him just a bit more but it’s not a bad move. Personal preference there. Don’t think JT is going to see enough touches to warrant a roster spot this year outside of really deep leagues. 4th option in that offense; maybe a RZ TD here and there but you’ll never know when to count on him. Don’t know who you’d drop for him either.

    • The mizer says:

Depends on your league, running back and receiver depth. The Raiders may easily be the worst team in football. I wouldnt touch a Raider with 10 ft long nag champa stick. Keep Gore.

Trying to shore up my bench, 10 team, h2h, .5 ppr

Need a TE to cover Gronk for a few weeks, Cameron, Bennett, Myers or Pettigrew and who would you drop? Helu or J.Stewart (rest of bench is Hillman, Antonio Brown and Patton)

Also worth grabbing Powell or J. Bell over one of the two above?

    • The mizer says:
      (link)

Cameron or Myers. With Gordon out I like Cameron to have a good few weeks. I would drop Stewart and its a coin toss between Bell and Powell I hate the Jets but Ivory is injury prone and not a great pass catcher so Powell might be good. Bell is a poor mans Bush so only if you want the handcuff.

    • Sky

J-Stew is on the pup list and won’t even be ready for week 7 anyways. If you dont’ have an IR spot for him, he should be dropped. Pick up Cameron.

I’d hold with Helu over those guys for now.

If you don’t draft a kicker, backup QB, backup TE, backup DEF, etc Yahoo gives you a bad grade as it’s looking at your projected point totals. It’s giving you zeroes in those spots like the kicker and your QB’s bye week.

@Sky: Yeah, I received a “C” because they hated that my bench was all RBs and WRs…lol. Yahoo also didn’t like my WRs, and while I failed to procure someone in the top 10, I don’t think I chose too poorly. I’ll look to trade later, and upgrade at the WR position.

10 team PPR (I had the 8th pick of the draft)
        QB: RG3
        WR: Pierre Garcon
        WR: Antonio Brown
        RB: C.J. Spiller
TE: Jimmy Graham (I snagged him at the end of the 3rd round instead of picking up a WR, which is why I have Garcon and Brown.)
        W/R: MJD
        W/R/T: Lamar Miller
        K: Greg “the Leg” Zuerlein
Def: Tampa Bay (Obviously, I’m streaming)
Bench: Tavon Austin, Eddie Lacy, Rashard Mendenhall, Ben Tate, Emmanuel Sanders

In my 12 team non-PPR money league draft last night (12th pick) I ended up with:

    QB: Russell WIlson
WR: Vincent Jackson, Jordy Nelson, Chris Givens
    RB: Matt Forte, Alfred Morris
    TE: Jordan Cameron
    Flex: Gio Bernard
    K: Justin Tucker
D: Tampa Bay (probably going to stream this)
Bench: Josh Gordon, Shane Vereen, Christine Michael, Quinton Patton, Cordarelle Patterson, Sam Bradford

    Yahoo gave me a C :(

    What do you think?

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

Non-PPR, I really like your starting WRs. Three guys with major HR potential who may only catch 65-68 rec apiece. Couple that with Gordon/Patton/Patterson on the bench and it looks really good. Four useful RBs – though Vereen is more of a PPR guy to me – and your team looks very solid. Yahoo’s teachers don’t know how to treat the talented kids in class…

      • Richie says:

  10. Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:

here’s another drafted team, this one has the same .1 pts per return yard as normal scrimmage yards. 1 pt PPR as well. Lot of value in return men in this league. This was an abandoned team that had 1 forced keeper. I went Rodgers over Marshall; really no other choices (6 pts per TD throw) 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1QB,1 W/RB.
Keeper round will count as the 1st round of snake so Rodgers in that round. 12 team.
    22. sproles (kick and punt returns, is top 10 RB in these kind of leagues, when healthy)
    27. cobb (both kick and punt returns, probably slightly less than last year, still pretty much a harvin role here)
46 Miller (last starter I liked left)
51 Gronk (he wouldn’t be around later, i did miss, by 3 picks, bernard by doing this)
70 Vereen (should be good in PPR, right, did miss j.nelson by 2 picks from picking vereen, kinda worried about having 3 GB people, esp 2 WR at same time)
75 Jacoby jones (would’ve grabbed Nelson here, jones is top 5 returner at both punt and kick, will likely have small role in offense as well, bigger than last year, anyway, scored over 12 per game last year in this league). Could’ve gotten him a few (5?) rounds later except around 3 other owners are smart enough to grab big time returner early too.
94 Ben tate (useful by himself, would turn into top 10 back if the already injured foster gets more hurt/doesn’t heal properly)
    99. g.jennings (probably should have reversed him and jacoby and still ended up with both, did anyway
118 P.thomas (eh, some punt returns too)
123 sanders (seems solid for this late, some returns)
    141 heyward-bey (2nd or 3rd, this is a good situation)
147 jacquizz (who really thinks s-jax stays healthy? does punts too)
    166 Browns D (good matchup week 1 and 3)
171 Bullock (amazing how good of matchups kicker can be found on the 10th drafted kicker)
Right when I finished drafting DHB i realized I’ll need a fill in TE till Gronk’s back. who’s the drop. Heyward bey?
In leagues like this you can usually fill in for bye weeks/injured starters a LOT easier due to the equal return yards. K.Martin/Mariani/Reynaud (last year) have decent value, most weeks getting at least 9 pts just from returns alone. Harvin (per game) and Cobb last year were both top 5 overall non-QB players due to the return yardage. Sproles near that, even without his glut of PPR style gains.

    Joique. I have rice/McCoy/mendy/hillman/red man
    Tyler Eifert. Witten/Dickson
    Quinton Patton. Vjax/garçon/Hilton/streater

I don’t need any of the three in theory, who helps by bench most?

Tough set of keepers to start with minus RGIII but that’s how keepers go sometimes. Like your depth at the skill positions, though would like just a little more upside on your bench from WR for a keeper. The Sidney Rice’s of the world are a dime a dozen, were guys like Wheaton or Patton around then? Should always think upside with late picks, especially keepers. On the whole, though, the team looks solid enough for a 10 teamer. Should compete.

      • RG3 Needs a Knee says:
        (link)

@Sky: Patton is still available and Wheaton went the same round….would you lose Rice for Patton?

    Sky,

Thanks for your hard work – you’re a great writer.

Should I drop I. Pead for Isaac Redman? I’m most concerned about late-season value.

14-team PPR ESPN league. See my roster below:

    QB: RG3 (Bench1: E. Manning)
    RB1: J. Charles (KC)
    RB2: A. Bradshaw (IND)
    WR: B. Marshall (CHI)
    WR/TE: R. Cobb (GB)
TE: Gronk (Bench2: J. Gresham (CIN))
    FLEX: G. Tate (SEA)
D/ST: Stl Rams (Bench3: Bal Ravens)
    K: S. Hauschka (SEA)
    Bench4: R. Mendenhall (ARI)
    Bench5: I. Pead (STL)

    Thanks again!

      Sky says:

      Thanks!

I don’t have high hopes for Pead. I’d take Redman for early depth and the chance that Bell’s out longer than anticipated.

Other than Gresham (worried he loses some rec to Eifert this year and he was already just ok before), I like this team. Hopefully Mendy’s good to go and you have a 4th RB in Redman to keep your flex available for an RB play here and there.

      • Pat says:
        (link)

        @Sky:

Thanks, Sky. Unfortunately my computer failed me and I was auto-drafted Pead at one point in the draft, otherwise I wouldn’t have him. Turns out Redman isn’t available (my bad), but I think I’m going to drop Pead to stash someone with more upside, given my team’s relative decency for the time being (especially when Gronk returns).

Not a cut-and-dry question, but how do y’all think about starting Mendy vs. Tate in the FLEX? I’m leaning towards Tate because Percy Harvin’s out and the Panthers’ D isn’t as stout as the Rams’.

A good, open-ended question that could almost spark a post: who are the top stash players?

        • Sky

          Sky says:
          (link)

@Pat: Floor/ceiling question, RE: Mendy. Mendy for floor, Tate for high ceiling.

The top stashers…besides suspended WRs (Gordon/Blackmon criminally cheap), depends on how deep you wanna go. TE Green from SD might surprise. Patton/Wheaton late upside WR pickups. RB stashes are Moreno and not much else. Too many jobs decided or close enough this year before there’s a need to think about stashing. If you’re what-if’ing, Cristine Michaels, Kendall Hunter, and Andre Ellington/Stepfan Taylor but that AZ thing is a shituation.

            @Sky:
Thanks again. I’m starting Tate over Mendy for Week 1 and picking up Patton / dropping Pead. If something happens in STL, I’ll grab Pead before others.

    Colston ATL
    Nelson @SF

@brent: That’s a well mixed offense. Always thin on the bench with a 16 teamer. Lloyd will visit your FA eventually but so will Bennett unless he performs well so no worries on that front. Your starting lineup looks solid from top to bottom for that size of league. Looks good.

@Sky: Thank you. Would you waive Lloyd and pick up Terrence Williams or Brian Quick or Nate Burleson or Jon Baldwin or Crabtree? Or should I target another potential mendenhall handcuff?

On a non-fantasy football related gripe, what the HELL is the supposed genius Ted Thompson doing with my team? Dude cuts Alex Green to bring in, drum roll please….Joe McKnight? Then, to “fix” his backup QB situation he finally gives up on Graham Harrell which sounded good at the time, assuming he’d keep VY, but what does he do? He cuts BOTH VY AND BJ Coleman to “fix” the problem by signing, another drum roll please….Seneca freakin’ Wallace? Why not just go get JaMarcus Russell and show the world we really don’t give an F who the backup to Rodgers is because we presume he’s going to go on some Favre-like Iron Man streak and never miss a game? The more I see him running in circles trying to fix the holes in the damn he built with his genius draft picks, the less I see Thompson as a savior and more as a guy who gets lucky when guys like A-Rod or Lacy fall to him in drafts. Oi vey.

(Thank you for the soap box moment)

      Sky says:
      (link)

@Clint (aka Pablo Death): Haha, breathe…breeeaaaathe….Always hard to tell what they’re thinking. Wallace has at least proven he can step in and be reasonable and for a team with some O-Line issues, his scrambling would be a boon. The McKnight over Green, though…yeah, no clue. If we see a few arrests for Green down the road, I think we have our answer but for now it’s definitely a head-scratcher.

14 team PPR league that starts 3wr/2rb/flex so pretty big lineup for league of this size. Need some trade advice

    Josh Freeman
Trich, D Wilson, DMC, Vereen, Woodhead, Helu
    Dez, Nicks, Britt, Jeffries, Blackmon
    Witten

    His team
    Peyton, Eli
Adrian Pete, Jacquizz, Daryl Richardson, Marcel reece
Roddy, Stevie Johnson, James Jones, Kendall wright, broyles
    Jared Cook, Gronk

Some thoughts; I need a better QB, both Eli and Peyton share the same bye so he has no leverage. Ship Helu for Eli? Part of me says do it but then I think about Helu’s potential upside.

Also can you picture any other trades? He is pretty weak at RB, and that is where I have some depth.

    thanks

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

You’re most likely not going to get Eli for a 3rd down back…try emailing him and see what he thinks first. Always a better way of trying to trade: communicate with the person you’re trying to trade with instead of drawing up ideas about what they want from yourself.

  34. Randog says:

I had to draft via my yahoo mobile app, and since this made research difficult, I used ye ole don’t draft kickers or defenses and just pick them up later strategy. Well, I got a D probably because it since they look at projected points to grade your draft. They also base it upon previous performance. Hey, yahoos, you win leagues by grabbing guys who have the potential to break out. You can’t project that shizz.

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

I read they also expect you to draft for bye weeks so everywhere I’ve drafted only one QB or one TE, I got dinged. Basically, they expect us to be robots and rely on only those we’ve drafted…

  35. Pete says:
    (link)

For Week 1, would you start Steve Johnson (BUF, home vs. NE, light rain), Vincent Brown (SD, home vs. HOU, sun), or Brian Hartline (MIA, @CLE, light rain) at WR4 slot? My gut says Hartline is gonna find the endzone, but I’m pretty skinny and don’t often trust my gut.

My other starting WR are Megatron, Marshall and DeSean Jackson. 12-team league, non-PPR and nonstandard scoring with a couple of flex spots (hence I’m starting 4 WR).

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

Give Stevie a shot. I’m skinny, too. But I have a baby beer gut. It takes time, you’ll get there!

  36. Mark says:

Any thoughts on this team in 1 12 team 0.5ppr:

    QB- Eli Manning
    RB-Trent Richardson
    RB-MJD
    WR-Cobb
    WR-Amendola
    WR-Decker
    Flex-Bernard
    TE-Sudfeld

    Bench-Roethlisberger
    Bench-Ivory
    Bench-Thompkins
    Bench-Woodhead
    Bench-Hartline
    Bench-Helu

    D-STL
    K-Who cares

Obviously waited on QB. Don’t like having 2, but it allows me to play match ups so I may stick with it. Our league also has a roster move limit so at least I don’t have to burn a move to pick up a bye week QB.

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

I don’t mind waiting on QB but I’d rather take a bigger swing at upside if I do then Eli. Personal preference. That said, your RB/WR setup looks very good and Sudfeld is a nice gamble at TE. If there are QBs out there like Tannehill or Bradford, I’d keep my eye on them by comparison to Big Ben and Manning over the first couple of weeks.

Overall, team looks solid enough even with the QB issue. Just play matchups and see who starts performing about expectation and go from there. for QB.
