Don't be shellfish...Tweet about this on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on Google+Share on Reddit

While my wife and I were going through the newspaper this morning, clipping out coupons for our trip to the store, I thought to myself ‘I really need to work on my openings for articles.  This is really just embarrassing for everyone’.  My second thought was ‘I should write up a post that explores some value plays in a yahoo league this year…and eyebrows need waxing.  Hope we have a coupon for that’.  Now as much as I’d love to give you value plays at every position, I just can’t.  Tight Ends are either going well over their ADP or they’re right in line so you’re just gonna have to make do with what I got.  What this will tell us is what their average draft pick has been so let us take a peek under the hood over in the yahoo drafting arena.  At this point, I think we can all agree that rankings aren’t going to tell us where the value lies.  Oh and why yahoo, you ask?  Because we’re doing what is called The Razzball Commenter Leagues and we’re using yahoo for them.  If you’re up for playing, click on that last link to find out more and then  click on this link to find the next great football stadium treat.  Mmmm, tasty!

Matt Ryan (Rank: 41, ADP: 84.8 or 9th round) – What would you expect me to lead an article about a value play off on other than the man I’ve been touting since May?  Unfortunately, we didn’t draft in May and I have a funny feeling this revision of rankings over at Yahoo will probably kill this one before long.  That said, I did do a mock in which two people were on auto and they STILL skipped Matt when their turn came about so it’s really going to depend on who in your league is or isn’t in the know.  But now that you know, don’t let them know, you know?

Peyton Hillis (Rank: 62, ADP: 100.7 or 10th round) – I blame you, Madden 2012.  Hillis has been a roller coaster ride over the last two seasons going from free agent diamond in the rough in 2011 to 2012 cubic zirconia.  Now he’s the goal line back on a team that plans to run the ball quite extensively and he’s being overlooked again.  I get it, Jamaal Charles is a sexy pick and no one sees Hillis getting many touches because of it.  Well, for us in the know, let’s take advantage of this glaring oversight, shall we?

Reggie Bush (Rank: 43, ADP: 69.7 or 7th round) - So let me get this straight.  RBBC is a dance craze that is sweeping the NFL nation and we’re letting a running back who’ll get the bulk of the carries for his team and who is also an adept receiver drop below Frank Gore in drafting?  I get it, you don’t trust him nor the team.  Understandable.  But he’s RB2 capable this year in both standard and PPR leagues and getting treated like he’s a flex or even a bench RB.  Mind: boggled.

Antonio Brown (Rank: 44, ADP: 61.4 or 7th round) - Seriously looks like the 7th round is the place to go this year for being undervalued.  Now I know he didn’t score many touchdowns last year but as I mentioned in my Yahoo Team Of My Dreams last week, touchdowns can be fickle.  If Brown can nab just a few more touchdowns, he’s going to be a steal in the draft.

Pierre Garcon (Rank: 70, ADP: 94.4 or 10th round) – Somehow, Robert Griffin, III keeps creeping up in the draft while his WR1 is slipping down.  I’m not even going to begin to try and apply an understanding of that logic.  I’m just going to say he’s undervalued and stop this post before my head implodes.

Hello and thanks for the great insight!

I was hoping for a piece of fantasy advice and one that may be a really stupid question but hear me out!

I’m in a 12 team H2H one player keeper league. I have the 9th overall pick and a dilemma of who to keep: Aaron Rodgers, Eric Decker or Brandon Lloyd?

It’s more complicated than it seems, though…

This is our second season and I had a terrible roster last year – Decker is my second best keeper candidate – all my RB’s were injured or rendered irrelevant (Hillis, Green-Ellis, Mendenhall & Felix Jones).

I drafted Rodgers in the first round of course and picked up Decker and Lloyd off of waivers. I wouldn’t lose a pick if I kept either of them but I would never be able to get the likes of Rodgers with the 9th pick (especially with a thinner first round draft).

My strategy if I keep Decker or Lloyd is to draft 2 high end RB’s with my 1st & 2nd round picks. I would have to hope for the likes of Luck, Manning, RGIII or Matt Ryan etc to fall to the 3rd or 4th round.

This is the first year I’ve been in a keeper league and with all the changes in the off season it makes it especially difficult to decide. I know what I’m getting with Rodgers and there is serious risk with Lloyd especially because of the complicated system he’s in A La Chad Johnson. Both he & Decker have potential to be top 15 receivers this year in my opinion

I think I should hold onto Rodgers and it’s probably a near no-brainer but without any quality backs after the first 3 rounds, I might be wiser to draft 2 RB’s with my first 2 picks.

    Please help, thank you!!

  5. Joe B says:
    (link)

@Sky: I currently have a decision make in my 12 team H2H 1/2 PPR Keeper League… We keep 2 players and can only own them for 2 years in a row. Last year I kept Roddy White and MJD, so if I would keep either of them again this year I would not be able to keep them next year. The strategy then would be for teams to trade their keepers for other teams keepers so they can avoid losing top tier players. As of now I plan on keeping Jimmy Graham and cannot decide on the 2nd player to keep… MJD is a beast, but the risk is high and if I can’t trade him I essentially lose a 1st round pick. My other options would be Andre Johnson (injury risk), Roddy White (emergence of Julio Jones worries me), or Marshawn Lynch (possible suspension/fluke year last year). So I have worries about all of my possiblities. What do you think would be the best way to go here? Thanks for the advice in advance.

    2 questions.:

    1) Areas to try and improve my team

    2) Who should I drop to pick up Rashad Jennings from Jacksonville

    QB – Stafford
    RB1 – DeMarco Murray
    RB2 – Steven Jackson
    WR1 – Julio Jones
    WR2 – Antonio Brown
    WR3 – Torrey Smith
    TE – Vernon Davis
    K – Crosby
    DEF – Philadelphia

Bench: Flacco, Roy Helu, Gerhart, Blackmon, Alshon Jeffery, Jared Cook

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

      How many teams? PPR?

      1) Stafford probably went where I would’ve taken my RB1. You have a decent set with Murray/Jackson but it’s probably your weakest position. Don’t know why you drafted a backup TE. Would rather use that bench spot on more high upside RBs.

      2) This was kinda answered with my last sentence. Cook for Jennings.

      • harkrider says:
        (link)

@Sky, I wanted to draft a better RB1, but I drafted late and decided to go with Murray and Stafford as my 1st 2 picks. Hopefully they will work out. As far as drafting 2 TE’s, I had to leave the draft early and I ended up with 2 TE’s, not by choice.

Thoughts on Helu, Gerhart and Jennings as backup RB’s. So my WR’s look good enough?

        • Sky

          Sky says:
          (link)

          Gotcha about the TEs

I love Helu/hate Shanahan. Gerhart should be really useful to start the season. I’d do my best to sell him on the AP owner after a couple of weeks of AP not playing. Jennings’ worth depends solely on when MJD comes back. Oompa Loompa is a workhorse.

I like your WR but as you didn’t asnwer my questions about your league it’s hard to decipher. Basically, your WRs reflect how you drafted your RBs so you took them where you could get them after the 4th round. Brown makes a lot of sense for a PPR league but might disappoint as a WR2 in a non-PPR league. Smith is a high upside play whom I would’ve rather backed up with WRs who weren’t all rookies, personally.

          • harkrider says:
            (link)

@Sky, It is a 12 team league, H2H. I am looking for other WR options. Thoughts on Braylon Edwards, Randall Cobb, Austin Collie, or Eddie Royal as other options

            • harkrider says:
              (link)

They’re all late-round fliers in my mind and nothing to jump out of your seat about until they do something. If I were to rank them as of right now it would be Cobb, Collie (concussion issues are pushing him down for me), Braylon, Royal, then Tate.

    QB – Tony Romo
    RB – Ray Rice
    RB – MJD
    WR – Hakeem Nicks

Do you have a bench? I see Smith/Maclin in your flex but don’t see anyone else. Based on the level of the players involved, I’d have to say no.

  12. Eric says:

On my bench I have CJ Spiller, Malcom Floyd, Michael Bush, Austin Collie and Alex Smith. My thoughts are I would use Locker as my flex…What do you think?

    • Sky

Locker is a sexy mystery pick. Since I’m not all that high on Alex Smith (steady but probably not big for fantasy purposes), I’d do it.

  13. Eric says:
    (link)

One more quesiton for you. Would you trade MJD for Trent Richardson in the PPR league straight up? Again, I am concerned at how long this contract situation will go on and once it is resolved I am concerned about the Chris Johnson effect.

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

Fears are understandable. You have to feel confident in your team and if you don’t have it, I’d make that trade. It’s not unreasonable but you know what you get from MJD when healthy/playing. Wouldn’t fault you for it, though.

Depends on what other teams look like right now. Can you see anyone competing with you? Too early to spend big on a backup. Like Hunter’s situation more. Just throw a buck out on both. Season’s too young to be bidding big on questionable playing time.

Hello, having a yahoo draft tonight for a 6-team start 2QB, 3RB, 3WR, 2TE, 1 DST, 1 K league. Nonppr, 4pts for QB pass TD, everything else standard.
Any thoughts on how this should affect my overall draft strategy? Or should players still have similar overall value when compared to a 12 team league that starts 1 QB, 1 TE? Thanks

  17. Bob says:
    (link)

So I’m a little confused. These guys are value picks because their ADP is much higher than their actual Yahoo ranking? All of these guys had their ranking updated (and moved up) quite recently by the fine folks at Yahoo so I am guessing the reason their ADP is so high is due to their previous rankings. Are those ADP’s for all pre-season drafts so far?

On a personal note, I hate when they do this. Getting Matty Ice and A Brown in the 8th and 9th round was sweet early on. No more in Yahoo leagues.

I also have a request/suggestion. Have you ever considered doing an ESPN rankings vs. Yahoo rankings post, identifying values on both sites in comparison to each other? Maybe even throwing in CBS’ rankings and yours of course?

Thanks for all the content so far this year, been very helpful!

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

Hey thanks for reading it all!

Yeah, this was written up right as it was changing, at least with regards to Ryan so trust me when I say I hate this too. I’m pretty sure the rest of them are still accurate. I just looked on mock draft central and see someone took Matt Ryan 31st. Of course, we don’t know what league setting they were in but the cat is probably out of the bag at this point. There really needs to be a better trend tracker with draft stats. I’d rather be able to click on a trend chart to see their ADP if I wanted to dig deeper. If they’re keeping the stats, I’m sure it’s doable.

I really like your suggestion but here’s the stickler: if I do it soon enough to where not all the rankings have been thrown all over the place and when I have time, it might not be of any use. If I do it in the middle of draft season where our site gets hoppin and I barely have time to wipe (I know, TMI), I wouldn’t do it any justice. I do like your idea, though, and will tuck it under my cap for next season. We focused on yahoo ranks because we were doing our razzball commenter leagues through them this year.

Again, thanks for reading and for the feedback. It’s really helpful for us to make sure we’re getting stuff out there that people want.

      • Bob says:
        (link)

@Sky, appreciate the response and understand the complexities that exist in trying to evaluate different rankings when ADPs change so often based on preseason performance, injuries, etc. Thanks again for the explanation and look forward to future articles.

        • Bob says:
          (link)

Also, in looking at ESPN’s rankings on all these guys, they can be had much later in ESPN drafts.

          Matt Ryan – Y – 41, E – 73
          Peyton Hillis – Y – 62, E – 81
          Reggie Bush – Y -43, E – 50
          Antonio Brown – Y -44, E – 66
          Pierre Garcon – Y -70, E – 77
