Don't be shellfish...Tweet about this on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on Google+Share on Reddit

Leagues are usually mixed  between your 6-team playoffs starting this week, or if you’re in RCL or in any other 4-team playoff format, this is your week.  The last week of the regular season.  Where points scored tie-breakers make you hate your former self from 2 months in the past.  If only you could send a Terminator to kill that former self before you made that roster move.  Wait, would that kill you now?  I don’t understand time travel!

My playoff/elimination game philosophy is no different than any other week.  You hear all sorts of “don’t get too cute” or “stick with your studs” or “Sarah Connor????”  Dude, the playoffs are no different than any other week.  You want to score more than the other team.  I know you’re reading that and thinking John Madden wrote today’s LSD.  I could go for some turducken though!  But it’s ludicrous the things you see sometimes – play who you think will score the most.  If that means benching T.Y. Hilton for Justin Hunter in a huge gamble (like I’m doing in one league, but I need to get a preposterous amount of points for an unlikely 4 seed), then go for it.  I honestly think Hunter outscores Hilton.   If I’m wrong, I’m wrong.  Hilton has sucked and Hunter will get garbage time – I don’t think I’m getting too cute.  Although you may think so.  I do have devilishly good looks…  Play who you want and if you’re torn LSD is here for ya!

Looking back to last week’s picks, and I’m still a Hunter fan despite the goose egg he dropped on me last week.  But it was “big money! big money!” with my other four – Michael Floyd, Donald Brown, Josh McCown and Alex Smith having good games.  For my benchers, and man, I bought way too much into that Bills defense bouncing back.  Matt Ryan wasn’t great, but probably still a loss and Steven Jackson decided to be good at football again.  Even Tony Gonzalez got a TD!  Yikes… The Colts also decided they can’t play run D like they did the first half of the season and let Chris Johnson go nuts.  At least Vincent Jackson had a subpar game, which while decent, I’m calling a win dammit!  Rough week, but I guess I’ll take 5-5.  Here’s who I like in week 14 and their % started in ESPN and Yahoo, respectively (NOTE – these are not always recommendations for 1-for-1 swaps, just guys I like who are understarted and guys I hate overstarted):

POSSIBLE STARTERS

Josh McCown (10.4%, 30%)  Officially your Bears starter yet again, it’s hard to knock on what McCown has done when called upon this year.  TDs not in just every start but every appearance has him undoubtedly a steady option, plus he has some of the biggest and most talented receivers to chuck it to.  The weather shouldn’t be too brutal and the Cowboys pass D isn’t above league average.  I like him as a solid QB play if you don’t have any of the studs.

Rueben Randle (12.3%, 23%)  I know his last week was brutal, but I like the matchup against a bad Chargers D and the nice weather there in San Diego.  I would make some sort of Anchorman reference, but you turn on your TV and get plenty of cross-promotions with that… I see him getting a TD here.

Riley Cooper (18.9%, 44%)  Yahoo has it right!  Great matchup against a bad Lions pass D, and he’s looked great despite the down fantasy performances.  The Lions should give the Eagles a good run for their money, keeping the Birds passing.  I don’t see any way you could leave him out this weekend with the big upside.

Bobby Rainey (13.3%, 37%)  I really think ESPN needs to work on their sampling.  Look at the percents in the picks thus far!  As I saw last week, the Bills defense is turrrrible.  I thought their data from the first half was more pertinent, but nooooo, they’re gassed.   And Rainey was the only good offensive player when my Panthers trounced the Bucs.  I think Rainey gets 20+ touches with big upside, and why he was my DraftKings pick as early as mid-week.  Think he’s a sure-fire RB2 or Flex.

Nate Burleson (2.3%, 15%)  For the same reason I like Cooper, I think this game becomes a shootout.  The weather looks like it should be decent enough for big passing plays, and everyone including the drunk hobo in Hoboken knows Calvin Johnson is getting every single look.  So why not give a couple to Burleson to shake the D?  We saw a nice return to action two weeks ago and I think he’s more week 12 than week 13.

SON OF A BENCH

Colin Kaepernick (56.1%, 45$)  I’ve always liked Kaepernick, love the arm, love the reloaded weapons, but this is the toughest matchup he gets on his slate – twice a year.  The Seahawks just made Drew Brees look like Jake Delhomme out there, and while they’re on the road and not in their impossible-to-lose-in home turf, I think Colin K is a bench for hotter options.  A guy like Nick Foles or even Josh McCown I like more.

C.J. Spiller (77.6%, 56%)  Again to reiterate, it’s hilarious how close my picks are following Yahoo % startage vs. ESPN!  I get that I might get some flack given the big game last week, but he hurt his ankle again during the game last week and very easily be the single-digit fantasy player we’ve seen in all but 3 weeks this year.  The Bucs D isn’t awful, they’ve actually given up the 8th-least fantasy points to opposing RBs and if Spiller is not feeling it yet again, this could be brutal.  And I think it will be.

Zac Stacy (57.2%, 55%)  I like Stacy, I was really blown away how well he ran against the Seahawks in primetime in week 8, but I just hate this matchup.  At Arizona, in the “Red Zone”, this is a toughie.  The Cards give up the 2nd-least fantasy points to opposing RBs, and can make a statement in their Wild Card push.  I like Rainey more.

Marques Colston (67.0%, 49%)  I’m actually shocked at those % start numbers for Colston.  Dude’s been brutal.  And my Panthers, despite my pessism for them extending their win-streak in the very tough NO dome environment, I don’t see Colston having a big game.  I like so many options more, for example, I think it’s Cooper over him and not close.

Vincent Jackson (89.0%, 90%)  I struggled with this last pick, so why not an oldie goldie!  Jackson is questionable as of the time of this writing, and with a bum hammy I’m always nervous for a WR.  The matchup is great, but VJax has always been hit or miss.  As of right now I’d weigh other big options and be cautious in your normal Vjax deployment.

If you have any last second decisions, shoot some comments below or tweet me @jbgilpin – and remember I’m going to be a little slower getting to them but I’ll get to everything well before kickoff!   Good luck in week 14!

Hey JB, I must be your biggest fan….2 weeks in a row, first comment…bored I guess Rob Ford has been quiet this week other than being banned from attending the Christmas parade…

Flex question for you in my ,5ppr:

Sky has suggested Cook, do you like him over Stacy or Ellington? Burleson also on waivers

@Nightpandas: Haha thanks man! I don’t buy the Cook love this week, no way they let him burn them that bad again. I like STacy there

    Weekly questions JB!

An underdog this week for sure limped into playoffs due to Julio n Cobb injuries…

Playing against Bree’s Charles Knowshon, Dax Fitzgerald etc…

    .5 PPR

    McCown or Romo? Leaning McCown

Randle or Andre Holmes? Leaning Holmes. (Staring Dez and White)

Lamar Miller or Stacy? Leaning Miller. (Staring Lacy)

Cook, Green or Reed? Leaning Cook too afraid of Reed injury

    Thx as always!

    • Yager says:
      (link)

@Nightpandas:@Livin on a Prayer: I trust Romo more, he is underrated, and I don’t trust McCown. Definitely Holmes, definitely Stacy, and I would go with Cook. The QB situation all depends on dependability or upside, if you are favored I go Romo, if you need to pull a rabbit out of a hat McCown.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Livin on a Prayer: I trust McCown and Romo hasn’t been delivering, McCown for me. Hmmm, disagreeing a lot with below, Randle for me. Agree Stacy. Then agree Cook too, agree on Reed injury thought

    Hi JB!
14 team standard league, last season game:win or go home for me.
Could Burleson or Ginn(’cause we count return yds) do better than V-Jax? I know he is Q now,but he did 2 quite games in the past two weeks,i expect(“hope” is probably better) a boom game against Buffalo D.
Donald Brown or Ellington as RB2?(Damn Richardson….i hate him)
And the last one: H.Miller or Reed as TE?

    Thanks and good luck!

I’m with you on Rainey and have him as my flex. Ben Tate put me in a hole, so I need to go all ceiling at WR2–Allen or Roddy? Or play both and bench Rainey? Non-ppr.

    • Yager says:
      (link)

@Steve Stevenson: Upside Rainey-Allen. Rowdy Roddy is too inconsistent.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:

@Steve Stevenson: Yeah I think what Allen has done is tough to argue, think he’s both upside and your play

  12. Jake Delhomme says:
    (link)

JB- why am I always the butt of your jokes? It’s hurtful, my friend.

Anyway, wanted your advice on my RB situation. Playing two of the following: L Bell, SJax, Rainey, Bernard, Ivory. Does Bell’s concussion worry you (I seriously thought the guy might have died after watching the play in real time)? Non-ppr.

Also have Foles and Stafford at QB- figure I can’t go wrong there but who do you have higher? 6 pt/passing TD.

    Thanks!

    • Yager says:
      (link)

@Jake Delhomme: I like Stafford (partial Lions fan), and like Bell (he is playing for sure), and it is a toss up between Rainey and Bernard…. Bernard, he is just way too explosive, and they are both neutral match-ups.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Jake Delhomme: Haha, as a lifelong Panther fan, you were my hero for a while, then it just fell apart so suddenly for you… Still love you though! Yeah I still like Bell then SJax for me. Like his matchup, close with Rainey. I would go Stafford, close

  14. AP says:

First round playoff game, going up against a 3 time league champ. My team is decent (McCown, Andre Brown, Vereen, Marshall, Decker, etc.) My only question is at TE. I’ve been starting T. Wright, and he’s been dreadful. I was planning on grabbing Delanie Walker, but he’s got cobwebs in his head. Any reason I should consider grabbing Heath Miller this week instead?

    • Yager says:
      (link)

@AP: I would go Walker for sure there if he plays. Heath Miller if not.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@tim: Jacoby???? Hmmm. I like Randle and Sproles more, but I like Sproles every week haha. I’d go Randle and Sproles

    Steelers or Jets D?

    Stacy or Garcon?

  19. Stump the Schwab says:
    (link)

Who are you starting at WR2 this week? Andre Holmes, Rod Streater, Marlon Brown, or Cordarrelle Patterson. Ugly, I know, but its a 14 team standard league. Thanks for the insight!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Stump the Schwab: I’d go Holmes there and hope it’s legit! Don’t like that C patt has to have a fluke play or return TD

  20. Sniff Test says:

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Sniff Test: Vereen and Jackson for me, I think that’s been my answer, close between Vereen and Bernard, like Vereen for the PPR. Hmmm I’d lean Holmes and hope. Yes, def worth that DEF move (hah!)

  21. Yager says:
    (link)

Greetings JB! I would like a second opinion on some posittions for this week. I have acheived the last seed in my playoffs with a 7-6 record in a 12 team standard league, and play a team that has lost one match-up all year!

At RB I have penciled in Gio Bernard, and Leveon Bell, and have benced Rice, Spiller, and Rainey. Of those three I need to choose one for my flex, and I beleive it is between Rice and Rainey. It seems you are pretty high on Rainey, is he the play here?

At TE I am stuck between Fleener and Ladarius Green?

…and last at WR I am torn between Kendall Wright and Mike Wallace. I had originally leaned towards Wright, but then I read Tehol’s scribe in which he slates Wallace for two tuddies?! The big question is whether or not I trust myself more than Tehol? Ha!

    Thanks for the help.

P.S. Hopefully our Brew Crew can ramp up the offseason a bit! They need to either sign Hart or Morales, or trade Weeks w/cash to the Mets for Ike Davis.

    • Yager says:
      (link)

@Yager: Other option I see is, starting the odd receiver out at flex over Rice or Rainey. These inconsistent backs are killing me!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Yager: Yeah I indeed like Rainey, think a big game is coming between those guys. I’d go Fleener, love Green’s upside, but needs to be main TE. Oh that Tehol… I think people making too much of Wallace v. old team. I’d go Wright and trust thyself! Agree we need a 1B. Would love seeing HArt back, I love Hart. Go Crew!

  22. Jon says:
    (link)

    JB –

I realize you’re probably the wrong guy to ask this question, but could you give an honest rank of the following 3 DSTs for this week? Carolina, Oakland and St Louis. Carolina has been awesome for me over the past few months, but tonight’s game scares me.

    Thanks – go Panthers?!

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Jon: Sure, scares me too. Depends on how you feel in your game, you feel safe and better Panthers, need upside Oakland. Could get a million def scores.

  23. Drew says:

Down big after week 1 of 2 week playoff. Need a homerun.

    Stacy or Spiller?
    Olsen or Cook?

    Thanks in advance

@Nate: Spiller for HR and Cook for HR. Would play Spiller anyway, but safe play would be Olsen

Hey Ya’ll! I need to fill 1 WR spot and 1 Flex spot with any of these guys. PPR League. Basically, pick a WR and RB (I’m leaning towards Stevie Johnson and Reece)

    WR:
    Stevie Johnson
    Greg Jennings
    Jarrett Boykin
    Greg Jennings

    RB:
    Darren Sproles
    Marcel Reece

    Thoughts?

    Thanks.

@Project Merkin: Yeah Stevie for me, but I like Sproles more. I think screens will help against our Pass rush

  40. what up JB? who to start at FLEX in PPR: Health Miller, Pierre Thomas, Andre Holmes, or Brandon Bolden?

And: should I start Stevie Johnson over Amendola?

    Thanks!!

  41. Clyde Prompto says:

Howdy, JB. Need 2 of these guys in a PPR: Gio Bernard, Bobby Rainey and Reggie Bush. Reggie’s normally a no-brainer but calf injury + snowy field + Joique = UGHH

    • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
      (link)

@Clyde Prompto: get bush out i’m wondering about j.bell vs vereen.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Clyde Prompto: Hah, I know some concern, but I like Bush and Rainey

      • Clyde Prompto says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: I benched Reggie because I saw a headline that said he injured himself in warmups and it was 12:59. There’s a 95% chance he has an awesome game and then makes out with my mom because ARGGGH FANTASY FOOTBALL

        • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
          (link)

@Clyde Prompto: i had same concern and wished they said it would have been timeshare, and i would’ve put in vereen (scored 20 more pts than bell) and i wouldn’t only be up 26.25 with bailey to go vs DAL def and romo. still think I’m not in terrible shape with CHI likely to torch DAL’s shitty defense, but romo also might tear up CHI’s shitty defense. If the TD’s go to murray/dunbar and/or FG’s instead of throwing TD’s i’ll probably be ok. Esp long 4 or 5 pt FG’s.

    Ppr playoffs!
At wr 3 do I start Streater or Holmes???

At flex do I start Stacy or Jackson??

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:

@John: I’d lean Holmes, then which Jackson? Like Steven and Fred more, so Jackson!

  43. Brett says:
    (link)

.5 ppr bench one vereen wright or rainey

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:

      @Brett: Leaving out Wright

  44. Brian says:

Why no love for Steven Jackson? He was Razzball’s darling coming into the year, seems to be close to 100 pct, coming off his best game of the year and going against a Packers team that got steamrolled by Detroit last week. Plus the weather in GB makes it a potential ground and pound.

Jackson is around no 20 in all the rankings- just wondering why, given all these reasons, he doesn’t seem to be an anyone’s radar as a good play this week?

    • John says:
      (link)

      @Brian:
I’m about to start Sjax over zack stacy in my ppr

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Brian: I don’t do the Rankings so you’d have to ask Sky. I like him this week. I’d have him early teens most likely, picked him a lot in decisions above

  45. Harley says:

.5 ppr, playoffs: ridley, ivory, ball or reece?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:

        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Blargh, think I”m done this season. Lost Gronk, Oakland DST is doing horrible. Edelman is non-existant, and Foles…ugh. Two weeks of this cost me the playoffs.

        • Zar says:
          (link)

          @Zar: Brightside now….its basketball time :D

          • JB Gilpin

            (link)

@Zar: Wooo, you know I love having hoops fans come over! Tough on Gronk and Oak. Foles at least has a TD and the snow is letting up!

            • Zar says:
              (link)

@JB Gilpin: ….I spoke too soon. Second half come backs……….

  49. Matthew says:

7-6 3rd place final week I can lose but but can’t have any 6-7 team win and score more than 34 points than me

Adrian Peterson, who I started, came through!!! Haha

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Matthew: Ugh yeah hope hes ok!

  50. Dave says:
    (link)

I have a bye this week and AP and Gronk got injured for me, I hate fantasy sometimes

    • Dave says:
      (link)

@Dave: Do I pickup Ladarius Green to replace Gronk? Uch I might as well go down fighting

      • Dave says:
        (link)

@Dave: Other options are Charles Clay, Garrett Graham

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Dave: I’d get Clay of those

  51. Nightpandas says:
    (link)

Here’s hoping Marshall doesn’t score 34 tomorrow…I will have survived Gronk going down, stupid Oakland D and Henery (wtf?)

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Nightpandas: Nice! Yeah I don’t think he does that haha

  52. NPI says:
    (link)

Who should I pick up since I just lost Gronk and my playoffs start next week

Jordon Reed (do you think he will be back next week?), S Chandler, Z Miller, H Miller, B Celeck, Z Ertz, L Green, or D Pitta??

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@NPI: I’d grab Reed and cross my fingers if you can make moves during your playoffs. Chances are, all of those other options will be there, but if Reed plays, he’d be the obvious starter. So if he’s out, you can drop at the last minute and go from there.
