So Maurice Jones-Drew finally ended his holdout with Jacksonville on Sunday.  Though no word on why he had a change of heart as of this typing, I have to assume he wanted to help Razzball writer Tehol Beddict further his tv career and me so I didn’t have to keep hearing ‘When is MJD going to come back?  Why is he so high in your rankings if he’s a hold out?  Why do you insist on not wearing pants to a funeral?’, and other great nonsense.  Now MJD owners can rejoice, Rashad Jennings owners will weep and my calm demeanor about the whole thing can be understood.  As far as the first week goes, I think it’s fair to say no one knows what to expect.  He has a game in a week so how in shape and ready he’ll be is anyone’s guess and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Rashad hold some week 1 value because of these questions.  Now is there a possibility of him suffering from CJ2K disease?  Sure, he could pull a Chris Johnson 2011 season out of his hat but I’m not going to assume that just because he was a holdout that he’ll be a mess for the rest of the season.  If you’re a Rashad owner at this point, I’d hold for week one if I had the roster spot to do it with and see how it pans out.  You might be able to wrangle a bit of trade value out of him if MJD doesn’t bounce back straight away.  With that said, let’s get on with what should be the final preseason blurb before the 2012 fantasy football season kicks off…

Kellen Winslow – Was cut by the Seahawks on Saturday and as of this typing doesn’t have a new team to call home.  Remember when I was doing my off season rankings of Tight Ends and said I didn’t understand how Kellen was getting ranked in the top 20 by experts?  You don’t?  Well where have you been?  Probably pretending your fantasy baseball team still had a chance.  It’s ok, you’re here now.  That’s what matters.

Roy Helu/Evan Royster/Alfred Morris – It’s been stated the Redskins are keeping their starting Running Back ‘a secret’ heading into the season.  I’m sure it’s mastermind moves like this that will show how Shannahan makes his team go 6-10 rather than 5-11.  Oh and it also makes him a jerkface.  Before you ask it I don’t know who will start and no other fantasy football analyst who’s worth their salt would say they do either.  Mike is going to ride the hot hand week in and week out and unless you have a VIP pass and can attend the Redskins practice every week, you’re not gonna know either.  Hope you enjoy your ulcers Redskins RB owners!

Kenny Britt – Only suspended one game by Goodell for his DUI.  He’s currently being priced around the 72nd pick off the board in yahoo but MockDraftCentral has him around pick 97 and his highest pick was 74th…hrm, I don’t know about you but something about that math doesn’t add up.  Well, whatever, to the point: he’s being priced as a WR3 and has WR1 potential.  I’ve already nabbed him in one of my friend leagues and plan to do so wherever I can if the price stays low.  I love me some Britt.  Come ‘ere Pippa!

I just drafted my team and after taking San Fran’s defense, I have realized that they play at Green Bay week one. Perfect! Especially since I drafted Aaron Rodgers. So should I gamble starting SF week one or should I pick up the Bills’ Defense who is playing at the Jets? And if I pick them up do I drop Isaac Redman, Pierre Garcon, or Darius Heward-Bey? Thanks for the advice.

  4. Principle Blackman says:

    Sky,
I just had a draft in my 12-team ridiculous scoring rules league. Seriously, this H2H league gives out points for just about everything you can think of. It is points per reception/rushing attempt/completion. It is also a return yardage league. All touchdowns (passing, rushing, receiving, return) are worth six points, except for touchdowns over 40 yards, which receive varying bonuses. Even field goals missed over 50 yards are worth a point. There are a lot more rules and what not, but suffice to say that QBs get the biggest boost from these scoring settings.

Now that all that preamble is out of the way, I was wondering if you would give me your ‘pert opinion on how my team looks. I had the 8th overall pick.

QB – Matt Stafford (round 1, pick 8)
    WR – Percy Harvin (4, 41)
    WR – Mike Wallace (5, 56)
    WR – Denarius Moore (11, 128)
    RB – Marshawn Lynch (2, 17)
    RB – Jamaal Charles (3, 32)
    TE – Tony Gonzalez (10, 113)
    Q/W/R/T flex – Carson Palmer (7, 80)

    BN – Ahmad Bradshaw (6, 65)
    BN – Shonn Greene (8, 89)
    BN – Emmanuel Sanders (13, 152)
    BN – Kendall Hunter (15, 176)
    BN – Matt Cassel (9, 104)
BN – Jacoby Ford (16, 185) (dropped for Josh Cribbs)

    DB – Lardarius Webb (12, 137)
    LB – James Laurinaitis (14, 161)
    DL – Jason Babin (17, 200)

    K – Alex Henry (18, 209)
    DEF – Cincinnati (19, 224)

Solid looking team. Would prefer not to have Lynch/Greene in a PPR setting but I also can’t fault you for it given how deep your league is. You have good depth at RB and some upside plays on the bench in your WRs. All and all, I like your team. Should be competitive.

I’m on hard times in a 2 QB league. It’s ppr and I went nuts with receivers- brandon marshall, greg jennings, antonio brown, percy marvin, gronkowski- but after getting mcfadden and t rich I had blown through way too much of my budget. With premium qbs off the board I had to shell out for Matt Schaub and ended up leaving the draft without a second QB. Some jerk snatched up 7 qbs to basically force me to trade with him. I picked up Russell Wilson off waivers and Skelton!

Now he’s saying he’ll give me any of his qbs for brown or Harvin. As a vikings fan I won’t be giving up Harvin so he’s offering me: Josh Freeman, Andy Dalton, Sam Bradford, Christian Ponder, Alex Smith, or Ryan Fitzpatrick.

I was thinking I can try for one of those QBs and Anquan Boldin since he said he’d offer me a WR if I wanted one.

Are any of those QBs worth dealing Brown for in a PPR? Should I just ride it out with Wilson and Schaub?

    • TheMizer says:
      (link)

      @Slam, Keep Wilson

That was my gut instinct. Thanks guys. If I deal one of those receivers/rbs/gronk I want a top 5 QB in exchange. Hopefully somebody gets off to a slow start I can buy kind of low.

    • Sky

PPR? If it’s non-PPR, Blount has a sneaky chance for a goal line TD. If it’s PPR, I’d lean Fleener even though I wouldn’t normally do that.

  11. Justin says:
    (link)

    Sorry about that…

Non PPR. 2 RB 3 WR No Flex.
The teams targetted in the trades all have bad RB situations.

I’m stacked at RB but am looking for a WR to solidify my roster. Im looking to trade any of Ridley, Brown, T Smith or J Blackmon.

You said you liked these trades…
My T Smith for A Brown (owner loves T Smith)
My T Smith/Ridley for B Marshall (same owner loves T Smith)
    My T Smith/Ridley for M Wallace

    1. Which trade is your favourite.
    2. Ive got Antonio Brown in another league. Is this dude worth doubling down on?
    3. Is Kyle Rudolph a good enough starting TE if I trade Olsen?
    4. A dude wants D Brown and G Olsen. Should I offer
    a. My Donald Brown/T Smith/Olsen for Colston/junk.
    b. My D Brown/G Olsen for Wayne

    Your insight is much appreciated.

    • Sky

      1) Already put them in the order I liked them the first time
      2) I like Antonio but not as much in a Non-PPR league. Kinda an odd question. He’s good, I have no problem with him but I value him more in a PPR league.
      3) I like Kyle but he’s still young so it’s debatable. Truth be told, I’m not big on Olsen so I could see going either/or there.
      4) You already asked me about these trades and I didn’t put them in the top three so I’m not certain what more info you need on these. Sorry, not trying to be harsh but nothing has changed since this morning.

I’m in a pretty deep 2QB league. My starters are Brady and Newton (keeper league) and my QB3 is Alex Smith.

I have room for one deep backup, and am deciding among the below. Mallett may seem like the most logical insurance play. Any suggestions, though?

    Hasselbeck
    Henne
    Grossman
    Yates
    Kaepernick
    Mallett

    • Sky

Since you have 3 starters and none of those guys are starting anywhere yet, I think you’d be better off using that roster spot on some back RBs. But if you are really wanting one, I’d actually lean Hasselbeck then Yates.

      • Chet "The Rocket" Steadman says:

@Sky, Thanks – It’s a deep league with a lot of bench spots, so I’ve got C Spiller, R Jennings, I Pead, and J Rodgers all sitting at RB.

@Sky, I thought I saw a sleeper on him, I just have this feeling that Daniels is going to be boring this year and since its my back-up might as well go for up-side.

Any thoughts on fleenor, I saw him alot in college and he has some great hands

          Sky says:

If you’re going with a back up, go with upside. Rudolph in that circumstance.

Don’t mind Fleener but wouldn’t expect much from him this year. Decent TE for a deep PPR league but I don’t have high hopes for him this year.

    Trade 2
    I get:
    Witten, Sproles and 49ers

    I give:
    bradshaw, britt and seahawks.

It’s a 1ppr for TEs and .5ppr for RB/WR. My current starter is jared cook at TE.

IS it even worth doing the trade or is Jared Cook a viable starter?

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

I have him in my top 15 for TEs so it depends on the league. Value-wise, that first trade I actually like even if you keep Cook. Don’t know why everyone hates Reggie this year, especially in a PPR. I’d do the first trade. I don’t expect much from Alshon this year.

I keep getting Hartly at the end of drafts, it sounds good to me, but I want to make sure those sounds aren’t my crazy me.

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

First off, he’s a kicker, I don’t know if I really put too much thought into kickers, crazy or not. With that said, he’s decent, plays in a dome for half his games and for a high powered offense so he’s set up to be a top 6 or 7 kicker. Just depends on how well he handles the job.

      • Jack Full of Hate says:
        (link)

@Sky, my thoughts the same on kickers, I think the default settings makes them less valuable. That being said in one of my leagues kickers get good rewards for knocking down the long distance.

        • Sky

          Sky says:
          (link)

I can get behind that. Usually I just want my kicker to be consistent. Those 40 and 50 yard attempts are nice but when the team isn’t getting you in range, you kinda appreciate your 7 to 9 point week from Crosby. Can’t believe we’re talking about kickers for this long!

  16. letsgobravos says:
    (link)

Looking for a little input on my draft results. Standard non-ppr league w/ 1 QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs and a flex. I was drafting out of the 9 hole. I won the league last year by loading up on RBs so I had 3 solid RBs starting every week. That was the plan again this year, but it didn’t really come together the way I planned. Here’s what I ended up with.

    QB- Romo (5-64)
    RB- Chris Johnson (1-9)
    RB- Sproles (4-40)
    WR- Fitz (2-16)
    WR- Welker (3-33)
    TE- Olsen (10-112)
    Flex – Greene (5-57)
    K- Bryant
    DEF- GB
    BN- Ridley
    BN- Heyward-Bey
    BN- Kendall Wright
    BN- Mike Bush
    BN- Ronnie Hillman
    BN- Dalton

I really struggled with my 3rd round pick. With Fitz in the second round, I was planning to go RB in the 3rd and 4th and have my RB2 and flex starter wrapped up. I ended up with Shonn Greene in the 5th and I really don’t like him at all. He was by far the best RB remaining on my board and I still considered passing on him because I just don’t trust him to be a consistent producer.

What do you think of trying to package Greene and Welker to upgrade to a new RB2? (which would make sproles my flex starter) If you think that’s a decent idea, who would you target? The RBs who went in the late 2nd round/early 3rd were…Charles (2-21), Richardson (3-31), Jackson (3-28), and Mathews (3-26)

Or…in the alternative, would you try targetting someone like Fred Jackson, Reggie Bush or Willis McGahee who went in the 4th or 5th round?

Thanks in advance. Really enjoying your work on the site.

    • Sky

      Sky says:

Welker’s probably not going to hold much clout in a non-PPR league. You could try for S-Jax or Richardson. What might be better is just to try Welker straight up. I understand your issues with Greene but you might not need to include him. That way you at least keep your RB depth.
