After a week off (not by choice), we’re back at it with our fourth episode of the season. And when I mentioned a week off, it wasn’t like we were all on a tropical island drinking Mai Tais (well, Tehol might have been). Nope, we recorded what was probably one of the best Podcast ever… Zach, Jen, Kevin, Tehol, and yours truly was doing our best impression of Dylan and spitting hot fire. But alas, technology railed against us in our time of need and all was lost. But do not fret, do not fear, Tehol and I are back and better than ever, delving into the unknown knowns (LOL, thanks Rumsfeld) of Tony Romo’s injury-palooza, Teddy Bridgewater’s 21 leg explosions, Colin Kaepernicks (valiant?) stand against the man, and our season preview of what teams finish where and how the NFL playoffs will shape and our Super Bowl winners. A betting man would expect us to pick the Seahawks and Chargers, so I guess this is my way of saying you should become a betting man (or woman). But still, it should be at least entertaining to see how much verbal calculus it takes us to get there… right? RIGHT? Right!

Anyhow, here’s Episode 5 4 :( of the Razzball Football Podcast!

Special Note: Next week, we’ll have our full panel going over the latest NFL news and the first week slate of games, including special guest Ramona Rice from our friends at Sports Gal Pal!

Keeper League: Kept 7 in a 12 team league
    Positions to fill:
    Qb Cam Newton
    WR Jordan Mathews
    Wr Eris Decker
    RB Demarco Murray
    RB Jeremy Hill
    Flex Michael Floyd
    TE:
    Bench
    Gio Bernard
My Question is with the 1st 2 picks in the draft and then pick again at 9th out of these players available is it obvious to take Elliot and Reed? players available are
    Elliott
    Reed
    Moncrief
    Tate
    Langford
    Ryan Mathews
    Melvin Gordon
and then using Yahoo ranks most below them…. the reason I ask is that other than Gronk and Olsen all other TE are available. So do I use the 2nd pick overall to take reed or use the pick for something else? It is a keeper/dynasty league so do I take another rookie or sophomore player maybe?
    Whats your thoughts?

    • jhan23 says:
      (link)

@jhan23: I see in your dynasty ranks you alson have Davant Parker 1 spot ahead of Moncrief and Parker is also available

      • Jay

        Jay says:
        (link)

@jhan23: I think they are close enough to where it’s negligible.

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@jhan23: Yeah, I think you go best available and let the chips fall as they may. Both are too good to pass up right now.

  2. Ron says:
    (link)

.5PPR – would you trade AP and overall pick #27 for A.J. Green and overall pick #32?

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Ron: Yeah, I think that’s fair… though, the tweak in his leg does worry me just a bit. Is this a keeper league as well? If so, I do it just based on that.

  3. Nightpandas says:
    (link)

First auction of the year, .5 ppr, how do I look? paid a lot for Cooper but was in a bidding war on the last higher end WR. Howard I’ll probably boot for kicker of the week.

    Q – Newton $30
    RB1 – Ingram $12 (keeper)
    RB2 – R Matthews $11 (keeper)
    WR1 – Cooper $51
    WR2 – Fitzgerald $26
    WR3 – John Brown $24
    TE – Gates $4
    Def – Minn $1
    K – ??
    BN Q: Palmer $6
    BN RB: D Williams $13, T Coleman $5, J Allen $2, J Howard $1
    BN WR: A Hurns $2 (keeper), S Shepard $11, T Williams $1

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Nightpandas: Yeah, that’s justifiable under those circumstances. I do like Cooper a lot this year. I like Brown’s value, and your keepers are fantastic. I like Newton there too, and Gates seems like a steal.

  4. Kneely says:
    (link)

Pick two in a PPR league: B. Powell, J. Forsett, S. Vereen, W. Fuller

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

      @Kneely: Bowell and Vereen here.

  5. Nick says:
    (link)

This freak commish ” again” screwed the draft …
    at 2am for me!
i had a top draft to complete my keeper team!
getting Amary cooper , Baldwin (couldn’t get Cobb back)
GTate, then Fleener (couldn’t get Kelce back , 3picks before )
and then value picks in Ryan Matthews, Diggs, Cousins, …
and at the end , Catanzaro K; Cin Def, Carr QB3! and few picks to settle down like Yeldon RB, Fuller WR, Sims RB, Treadwell WR, Walford TE

the guy set the draft for 5 keepers and started round6 , with the last season’ winner picking 1st, me 3rd!
RESET! i’d pick 6th, at 4am Paris time!!
    UNHappy Nick

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Nick: Haha, well, you are in a unique place on the hemisphere…

I’m still digging your replacements here. I like Mathews and Cousins as your value picks… iffy on Diggs, but worth a shot.

  6. Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey says:
    (link)

earlier when i asked if the MIN players had been adjusted post knee explosion it was due to this, i KNOW dez bryant had been moved down to around 17th-18th where AP was. when i saw dez higher up again (8th now in PPR top 200), i figured an update had gone retrograde (i don’t know if that’s an internet techy term but it fits here), since i know you had dez lower before. since you said earlier that MIN’s players are correct and up to date, is it possible your earlier changes that had been made to DAL players have been “unupdated”? or did you just move dez back up again?

    • Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey says:
      (link)

@Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey: also, it appears AP didn’t move at all, (around 17-18th), diggs went UP, and treadwell was badly hurt (which makes sense).

also, t.williams moved back up a LOT again, and i know he had moved down a lot post romonobyl

      • Jay

        Jay says:
        (link)

@Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey: Yeah, unfortunately it doesn’t save my edits, so I can’t tell what it was previously, but Diggs was a bit high. I’m fine with Williams, right now, he’s right behind Treadwell at the moment. I think I moved up Dez about four spots. But I know for sure it didn’t have my Prescott ranking, as I had him at 23… I’ve fixed those errors just now. I’ll probably have to go through everything again just to make sure…

        • Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey says:
          (link)

@Jay: if you went back after moving dez down and put him back 4 spots that is correct then. i know for sure i went back and adjusted all my leagues after that (and i can’t import them to other leagues since each one mostly has different specs, IDPs or not, PPR or not etc). it’s one by one by one.

          • Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey says:
            (link)

@Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey: and today is the start of like at least one draft per day till the 8th.

            • Jay

              Jay says:
              (link)

@Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey: Yeah, I went through it all and everything should be correct. I did move Dez, but kept Prescott the same. I don’t have it on my phone right now, but Williams should be in the high 60s? Somewhere near Treadwell.

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey: I actually moved him to 12 I think in the last update… I’ve been hyping Prescott a little, and I’m okay with him on the cusp of the first round.

I can double check the rest of the rankings, all I do is arrange em and FP does the rest, checking now.

  7. Brian says:
    (link)

What’s your thoughts on Tyrell Pryor ? Would you drop Vincent Jackson to bring him aboard ? I feel like he has more upside but need your opinion if I should make this move ?

    Thanks

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Brian: I think his upside might be a little more in keepers, but in a redraft, I’m comfortable still with Jackson.

  8. Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey says:
    (link)

wow, i’m noticing how far the projections are from most places on the WR TEN situation, most of them show hunter as being like 4th string at best. you’ve got him 2nd in points.

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey: I’m updating those every couple of days… with an update logged for tonight, that should be one of the changes. I think I have him at 27.80 34.30 40.80 right now…

  9. Tony says:
    (link)

So who are the guys you find yourself really targeting, or walking away with in almost all your drafts?

    • William Hung says:
      (link)

@Tony: For me it’s Devonta Freeman for sure. I’m debating on Je’Veon Bell, Arian Foster, and Josh Gordon – Bell in the 2nd round seems a bit high for someone missing the first 3 weeks combined with the injury history. Foster due to injury and age. Gordon’s ADP is around 80-90 overall so that’s still a starter in most leagues and he’s out for the first 4.

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Tony: I’m kinda trying to get Landry in all my leagues. I have faith in Anderson, but I always find myself seeing something better when I reach him. I like David Johnson a lot… but I’m worried just a tad with Green at the moment.

  10. Brian says:
    (link)

Your thoughts on TE Cook would you rather habe Clay or Irgil Green over Cook ? Or do you believe in Cook with Rodgers

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Brian: They are really close, but I give the small edge to Cook. I believe in him with those group of guys.

  11. Big league choo says:

    Wr A Brown
    Wr Decker
    TE Fleece

    Bn J Hill
    Bn J Brown
    Bn Emmanuel Sanders
    Bn Woodhead
    Bn Brady

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Big league choo: I’m digging the Brown and Decker combo here. I think you have a great bench, and you’ll find yourself able to trade for some help with on the of the QB’s you don’t need when the time comes.

  12. Comatose says:
    (link)

Just drafted this 12-teamer standard league, looking for feedback.

    QB – Brees
    RB – Charles
    RB – Latavius
    WR – Julio
    WR – Dez
    TE – Barnidge
    FLEX – Langford

    BN – John Brown
    BN – Diggs
    BN – Corey Coleman
    BN – Spencer Ware
    BN – Jimmy Graham
    BN – Winston
    BN – KaDeem Carey
    BN –

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Comatose: There’s some risk here with Bryant and Charles, but I love the Latvius pick here, and I think Barnidge and Langford will have sneak value. Loving the bench too.

  13. Rondo says:
    (link)

What do you think of this team in a 12-Team .5PPR?

    QB: T. Brady
    RB: A. Peterson
    WR: A. Robinson
    WR: A. Jeffrey
    WR/RB: M. Evans
    WR/TE: D. Moncreif
    DST: Texans
    K: Crosby

    Bench QB: E. Manning
Bench WR: K. Aiken, C. Coleman,
Bench RB: M. Gordon, G. Bernard, J. McKinnon
Inj: T. Eifert (round 15 pick)

    Thanks.

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Rondo: I love your WRs, and it’s kinda of a strange format, but you’ve set yourself up well. Digging the Gordon buy here, I like him a lot, but I’ve burned others by saying so last year, so I kept myself quiet this time around.

  14. Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey says:
    (link)

ok, here we go, first from scratch draft of the year (have done the pick 2-5 player dynasties, but those aren’t close to same thing). 4 pt TD’s for throwing, not big play IDP, .25 pts for carries PPR. last year got lucky and drafted 1st overall and grabbed l.bell, this year had 17th and still got him. 1 flex spot.
    – QB (start 1)
    – Rivers (i probably overpaid, as i missed out on fitzy with this pick, but by projections he’s the number 5 QB in this league)
    – gabbert (19th)
    – RB (start 2)
    – l.bell (1st)
    – langford (3rd)
    – abdullah 5th)
    -j.howard (12th, locked up CHI RB’s)
    – artis payne (he went later than he should’ve considering how easy it’d be for him to start, 21st)
    – WR
    – jeffery (2nd)
    – t.smith (6th)
    – wheaton (7th, way too late for him to be around)
    – s.smith (13th, way too late for him to be around too)
    – j.strong (15th)
-woods (20th, had intended on only having 5 WR, but 3 of the above have the same bye, so went this instead of backup IDP, there’s still good LB’s out there)

    – TE (start 1)
    – jimmer (8th, good god is he late this year at 144th)
    – tamme (22nd)
    K jankowski (25th)
team D BUF (these were going WAY too early, 16th)
    IDP’s
    LB (start 2)
    – ogletree (9th)
    – j.collins (10th)
    S (start 1)
    – h.smith MIN (14th)
    – burnett GB (1 IDP flex spot, 18th)
    DE (start 1)
    – ansah DET (11th)
    – dunlap CIN (17th)
i fucked up here, for some reason thought ansah was a DT (i think he was last year), and missed out on DT’s 2-4 (cox/atkins/short), but with my high waiver will likely get j.casey DT #5. if not for bye problems i’d have gotten donald LA over ansah, but ansah ranked one overall DL spot higher.
    DT (start 1), none yet
    CB (start 2)
    – amukamara NYG (23rd)
    – l.ryan NE (24th), great thing about CB’s is yahoo’s rankings have about nothing to do with fantasy pros, so i still got 2 top 10 CB’s according to fantasy pros.

how’s the offense look? and what would you guess how many teams are in this league? i got 2nd in this league last year (even after the l.bell injury) with rivers as starter too (i think tyrod as backup).

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey: Uh, there’s no way you can overpay for Rivers. TRUST ME.

So first, I’m really liking Langford here, he’s almost been forgotten a lot in the drafts I’ve been in. Your depth is pretty strong too, which is really important in this format. I think your okay with Ansah, but it’s times like this when I could refer you to Kevin… man, what a loss.

I’ve never been a huge fan of Smith, but I think he’ll have a good year this time around if only because the 49ers don’t have many other options.

      I’m digging it.

      • Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey says:
        (link)

@Jay: yeah, the real loss was the evaluations of IDP deeper level players and rookies and role changes on D from Kevin, that stuff is invaluable. the top guys (ansah being a top 4 overall DL type) aren’t hard to get rankings on. i literally just brain farted on ansah being a DE not a DT, but good news is DT’s tend to score less points than any IDP position, so if i get the 6th ranked one instead of the 2nd (cox) i’m possibly only losing like 5 total points.

        • Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey says:
          (link)

@Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey: yeah he’s really skyrocketed up yr PPR top 200 with the ellington’s out news, yet i think moved down in dynasty rankings today at same time. which is hilarious (and possibly quite valid, just funny)

          • Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey says:
            (link)

@Jay: yeah, i mean fantasy pros only has like 8 guys that even send rankings (at least in august and everything after), and that’s the top of the damn industry (for rankings/mock draft prep etc)

  15. Frank White says:
    (link)

Hey Buddy thanks for your help yesterday!!! I’m #2 waiver pick and you told me my bench was kinda weak. Should i use my waiver now to pickup Jesse James PIT TE?? I can drop Hightower NO RB… Or wait for a jewel?? 12 team PPR

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Frank White: Of course! I’d hold for now, still a lot can happen in Week 1.

  16. Barker says:

Bn wrs matthews (8) treadwell (12)
Bn rbs gore (9) coleman (126)
    Bn te clay (15)

How did i do — i used your regular rankings mixes with dynasty and kind of did no research all offseason.
Who to drop for def if i cant make a trade of qb before season obv clay correct ?

Also a couple of trade ideas i have been kicking around, mind you these are to teams with
One qb or one good one one weak one or two weak qbs

    Aj green for winston/ cobb
    Gurley for ingram /winston
Allen robinson for cobb flacco or winston
    Dez for cobb winston
    Alshon for cobb winston

And would offering flacco be a slap in the face and a nonstarter for these trade ideas?

    • Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey says:
      (link)

@Barker: might want to mention keep how many.

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Barker: I think you did great! I’m really liking the Cobbs, Hopkins combo, and your RBs are pretty solid. One thing that stands out though is that you don’t need three QBs. I think you sorta know that, as you mentioned some trade ideas here… but I don’t think they are worth too much. I think you drop one for a DEF, and the other for Clay is just fine. Hold on the Green one for now, Gurley is worth a try, and so is the Robinson one. Though, I have to be honest, I don’t think Flacco and Winston will garner much interest.

  17. James says:
    (link)

    Hey jay,
Just had my 12 team ppr draft. 7th pick.
    Qb: rivers (rg3)
    Rb: Langford, Murray (Abdullah, Yeldon)
    WR: green, Bryant (Austin)
    TE: barnidge (witten)
    2 flex: Hilton, a. Foster

    What do you think?
    What would you change?
    Thanks

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@James: Looking good with Rivers. I wouldn’t make any changes right now, lovin what you did with the flex, I’m a fan of Langford here too.

Had 12 pick. Was happy to get DJ/Wilson b2b. Lost Teddy for my bye week QB. Also who should I drop for a Kocker when the time comes?

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@TTRA1N: I sorta think Jennings or Washington might be your drop there. I like the team. I think CJ is sorta a risk, but your WRs are very strong, and your QB mix should hold it all together.

      • TTRA1N says:
        (link)

@Jay: Thanks. I was thinking Ajayi or Washington.

  19. Scott Hagen says:
    (link)

Starting with Landry, Jordy, Freeman. 1st pick I will have choice of Julio, ODB or Ezekial. Full PPR, .25 Per rush and there’s 2 flex spots. When pick comes back in 2nd rd it will look like this at RB. Hill, Gore, Demarco, Matthews. Those kinda guys. Who do u think I should snag 1st pick? Thanks!

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Scott Hagen: I’d go Julio, and then probably Hill, then Murray as a backup.

  20. Paradise Paved says:

Question about draft strategy in a 12 team, 1/2 point ppr, 1 qb, 2 rb, 2 wr league

My keepers are: Wilson, Lacy (can still trade him for freeman), AB, and Evans

Due to keepers, I dont pick until 19 picks and then I will pick every 12 picks after that.

The following are available…Do I just go RB with my 19th pick or do a grab another WR if there is a great one available?

elliot, watkins, maclin, d. thomas, edelman, baldwin, landry, cobb, decker, reed, tate, benjamin, langford, d. murray, forte, hill, stewart, foster, woodhead

    thanks!

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Paradise Paved: I think you just go best player available. Elliot, Cobb, DT, Edelman all stick out from that list.

  21. Blake says:
    (link)

    Jay,

had a question about how to adjust your rankings based on my league settings.

I am in a PPR league that gives 6 pts for passing TD’s, 20 yards passing per point (instead of 25) and -2 pts for inteceptions instead of -1.

Whats your recommendation for adjusting the QB’s up or down based on that?

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Blake: I’d move the QB’s up about 5-10 spots just to put a hard number. The TD scoring lifts up all RBs and WRs, but only QBs can put up gaudy TD totals. So I’d say the top-5 especially move up, and then adjust accordingly. And then add in the 20 yards passing…

      • Blake says:
        (link)

        @Jay:

in your rankings – do I just move the top 5, 10 spots up? and then the other – How do I add the adjusted 20 yards passing for the other QB’s in your rankings

        • Jay

          Jay says:
          (link)

@Blake: I’d do it by feel. I think the top-5 guys, you move up the most. Then kinda lay off as the rankings go down. I’d use my 6-point post as an indicator of how to value guys as well.

        • Jay

          Jay says:
          (link)

@Blake: Something like 15% sounds reasonable, but not exact I’d probably say.

  22. Drekkan says:
    (link)

ESPN standard scoring non-PPR, 12 teams.

Was drafting in the 11 spot and came up with the following:

    QB: Aaron Rodgers
    RB: Jeremy Hill
    RB: Ryan Mathews
    WR: AJ Green
    WR: Allen Robinson
    TE: Dwayne Allen
    FLEX: Jordan Matthews

    Bench
    RB: Rasah Jennings
    RB: Charles Sims
    WR: Josh Gordon
    WR: Willie Snead
QB: Dak Prescott (who I took as a last round flyer because I’m a Cowboys fan and wanted to have fun with the last pick).

My issue is now because of my position I have good waiver wire priority, and have a conundrum on whether I drop Dak and grab either:

    a) Christine Michael;
    b) Spencer Ware; or
    c) Neither and stand pat.

    Any thoughts?

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Drekkan: I’m okay with either actually… consider it a free spot. I think you have enough depth at RB and WR, and to be fair, I’m not sure those two are a huge upgrade. I could justify Ware in case the Charles owner needs him at some point… but I think you can have fun with that in case Prescott takes off. What happens if he becomes viable? Then you have Rodgers to trade, which can net you something great.

      • Drekkan says:
        (link)

        @Jay:

Thanks! I actually think I’ll go with sitting on Dak and just embracing this run. Thanks for all the great fantasy advice throughout the year.

    Hello Jay,

    WR – TY Hilton
    WR – Fitzgerald
    RB – Ezekiel Elliot

@Chris: I think you did fine. Honestly, it’s a well rounded team… nothing flashy. I do like the Hilton and Cooks pickups a lot, and I think your depth is solid.

And totally, streaming DEF is the way to go.

Jay! What’s up ked? Great job on fantasy prep, I FEEL like I did a nice job on my draft last night, but let’s see what you think. 12 teamer, pretty standard scoring, more points for 40+yd TD’s and gains. I took Luck and Stafford who have the same bye week, other than that? Well let’s see what you think.

    1. (1) Antonio Brown WR
    2. (24) T.Y. Hilton WR
    3. (25) Eddie Lacy RB
    4. (48) Donte Moncrief WR
    5. (49) Andrew Luck QB
    6. (72) Ryan Mathews RB
    7. (73) DeSean Jackson WR
    8. (96) Gary Barnidge TE
    9. (97) Willie Snead WR
    10. (120) Mohamed Sanu WR
    11. (121) Matthew Stafford QB
    12. (144) Jerick McKinnon RB
    13. (145) Shaun Draughn RB
    14. (168) Dan Bailey K
    15. (169) New York DEF

@Project Merkin: Hey Merkin, and thanks!

Well, any team with Brown and Hilton should be okay. I’m iffy on your RB situation, but I think Luck and your WRs will offset that. Nice pick on Barnidge there.

12 team .5PPR – who are your top 3 you grabbing off the waiver wire from the list below?

Stiils, Doctson, T. Coleman, Hogan, McFadden, Morris, J. White, Kearse, Riddick, Coates, Draughn

    I’m in a 1/2 point ppr league.

    I have
    RB – charles
    RB – mathews
    WR – odb
    WR – bryant
    Flex – D. Thomas
    Flex – Floyd
Bench – sims, c. michael, woodhead, john brown, torrey smith

With the Charles news the past few days, I was offered Ware for Sims or C. Michael….would you trade either?

    Thanks

now we got a new definition of “kaepernicking”
and first off, i want to make sure i’m all about NEVER making somebody stand up when some music plays on an intercom, EVEN IF we lived in a society that didn’t allow cops to kill unarmed people routinely without any real consequences.
that being said, if he’s so serious about living dat activist life, why didn’t he do that back when he was either:
    1. winning NFC championships and was at the top of the sport (and had he did so it would’ve looked pretty legitimate, as he would’ve had reason to think he just gained some influence)
    2. at least had a steady roster spot and wasn’t about to likely be cut (so last preseason 2015)

did he just learn about all these cop murders? is that what we’re dealing with? cause they didn’t happen since last year’s training camp (well some of them of course did). i’ll go ahead and assume not near total ignorance on his part. with that assumption it’s pretty obvious he’s just trying to draw media hype to what it might look like if the “righteous dude of the people” (he got his union card for this in the mail just about less than 10 days ago, he’s working out which martyr to get tattoed on his back, forthcoming) gets cut in a pretty leftist city.

the only other believable option is that he suddenly got politicized in the last 10 or so days? ok

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@The Harrow: Well, he’s probably just secretly practicing sitting since he’ll probably be on the bench the entire year…

Bottom line, and what I tried to explain, is that I think he has every right to do what he does, and everyone has a right to criticize him… but I’ve noticed that the level of criticism doesn’t really pass the smell test. I’m glad he’s standing up for something and that something I would say is important (especially locally), and I want to see more of that. Beyond that, it’s a non-issue to me.

      • The Harrow says:
        (link)

@Jay: like mentioned, i’m not against somebody not wanting to stand up just from some music coming out of a speaker. nobody should be able to tell anybody to stand/sit for anything like that. i’m not criticizing his stand on any issue (or certainly not his “right” to have a stand), it certainly seems odd if he wants to make a stand about this stuff he just waits till the last 10 days though. that’s the part i’m being critical about (cause it’s funny and doesn’t make sense)

i mean, if somebody had his current mindstate RE: political issue here why would they have not have done this years ago (especially when his roster spot was not only safe, he was at least a near all star in the super bowl)? he’s either
        1. literally just formed this political stance (or been ignorant about this issue for years as if it just started to exist), or maybe wasn’t too worried about it and just lately somebody he’s close to had a family member killed by cops.
        2. or is only doing this for some other sort of reason that isn’t about the political issue (first thing that comes to mind is simply trying to keep his roster spot, or at LEAST keep the media attention on him) but there could be others.

we’re not talking about an 11 year old that read some books and by 14 he’s now got political opinions here (like i’m sure could be said of a large amount of people, probably including myself). he was just as much a grown man 1-3 years ago. is it possible that a grown man wasn’t aware that cops simply don’t get in trouble for killing unarmed people in the u.s. until somebody showed him this about 10 days ago? maybe, but man is that depressing to admit that.
as far as passing a “smell test” had he been outspoken about this stuff when he first had the leverage to do it (which may or may not have been when he got to a super bowl, but that sounds right), i’d have no criticism at all about this. exactly the opposite in fact. during those 2 weeks when nothing but worthless crap “news” comes out of the players pre-super bowl, it sure would’ve been a keen time to bring up issue like this.

        • Jay

          Jay says:
          (link)

@The Harrow: I think point two doesn’t make much sense. If anything, he’s basically ended his career by doing this. Staying relevant… eh, I just don’t buy it. But I’ll admit, I’m not him, so I can’t really comment on what the genesis of this was for him. As for your other point, I’ll respectfully disagree. Here’s an excerpt from Jackie Robinson’s biography describing the moment when he believed he could no longer pledge allegiance to the flag:

“There I was, the black grandson of a slave, the son of a black sharecropper, part of a historic occasion, a symbolic hero to my people. The air was sparkling. The sunlight was warm. The band struck up the national anthem. The flag billowed in the wind. It should have been a glorious moment for me as the stirring words of the national anthem poured from the stands. Perhaps, it was, but then again, perhaps, the anthem could be called the theme song for a drama called The Noble Experiment. Today, as I look back on that opening game of my first world series, I must tell you that it was Mr. Rickey’s drama and that I was only a principal actor. As I write this twenty years later, I cannot stand and sing the anthem. I cannot salute the flag; I know that I am a black man in a white world. In 1972, in 1947, at my birth in 1919, I know that I never had it made.”

People come to realizations all the time… Obviously there was a trigger for him… but I think questioning when or how he formulated his opinions is just another way of moving away from what those opinions are, which I think underscores my original point, everyone should discussing what he’s protesting, not the method for which he using, as protected under our fundamental rights, to protest.

          • The Harrow says:
            (link)

@Jay: see that’s where it’s not even an issue for me, as i’m completely behind unarmed people not being killed by police without police being punished for it. no question at ALL on that (for me). i have NO question about agreeing with his point on the issue (thus it’s not “controversial” to me at all), didn’t mean to imply that. i won’t show exactly how extreme i actually am in my own life towards this point (pleading the 5th on illegal acts and such)

and if you are probably already near the end of your career what exactly do you have to lose if this just seals it? it certainly appeared his play was nearly kicking him out of playing time anyway.
it certainly is believable that his realizing his NFL career was nearing an end led him to readjust his entire mindset (RE: political issues he never showed publicly he had any interest in before), and maybe, just maybe, his awful play the last few years when compared to how good he was before was caused some sort of built up anger/anxiety about stuff just like this, causing his focus to exit during games.

you are right in that when the media deals with “questioning when or how he formulated his opinions is just another way of moving away from what those opinions are” you are right; in my own case, i’m so far politically removed from a what a “normal” political american is supposed to be that the media speaks to such that the only point of what’s going on here that’s interesting to me is the genesis of his protest/political awareness, at this late date in the game. to me it’s so utterly obvious that cops need to be aped it’s not contestable by sane people, but that is certainly not a statistically “normal” mindset.

            • The Harrow says:
              (link)

@The Harrow: yeah, the way the media deals with this whole thing is exactly how they deal with everything else. cop murders aren’t even mentioned as “murders” at all, they’re described as “tragic events”. their speak is so warped to even call a murder a murder is questioned as some sort of affront to the police state. kaepernick’s “lineage” or some b.s. is talked about for 20 minutes yet not one mention of all the dead people piling up across the entire country.

when people empty an entire clip into unarmed people whether at their job or otherwise it’s a murder well before it’s a “tragic event”. doesn’t matter where their paycheck says they work.

@The Harrow: Yeah, I think we totally agree here. Honestly, like I said on the pod, I think it was the wrong player to do it because of all the different ways this could have it spinned, from career, to whatever. If Aaron Rodgers did this, I think he’d be universally praised.

how’s this one look. PPR 14 teamer with 6 pt QB TD throws (explains paying for luck). 2 keepers. picked out of the 14 slot. 1 flex, start 3 WR, 2 RB, 1 TE, 2 DB, 2 LB, 1 DL, 2 IR slots.
    QB luck (3rd)
RB mccoy (1st), charles (2nd, man i’m nervous about his playing time so far, but still like him better than fat lacy or cj anderson), woodhead (6th), ware (10th, got my backup though), ajayi (12th, doesn’t he have a good chance of carries?), artis-payne (20th), booker (added from FA when eifert slotted)
WR a.brown (4th round keeper), diggs (5th), garcon (13th), lafell (18th), parker (21st round keeper)
    TE eifert (9th), clay (15th)
    K bailey (20th)

    DB collins NYG (11th), h.smith MIN (16th)
    DL ansah (17th)
    1. look ok?
    2. is booker better stash than any of r.woods, draughn, perkins, prosise, west (KC), turbin, gillislee, patton, eli rogers, conley?

Love Brown here, and since it’s a keeper, still like Diggs there, and to an extent, LaFell. I’d hold for now, I don’t see any obvious upgrades from those names.

    JB,

I draft 2moro in an ESPN league 12 team. The scoring settings are as follows for offense, lots of extras I’m not used to:

    Passing
    Every 25 passing yards (PY25) 1 Every 5 pass completions (PC5) 1
TD Pass (PTD) 6 40+ yard TD pass bonus (PTD40) 1
50+ yard TD pass bonus (PTD50) 2 Interceptions Thrown (INT) -2
    2pt Passing Conversion (2PC) 1 300-399 yard passing game (P300) 1
    400+ yard passing game (P400) 2

    Rushing
Rushing Yards (RY) 0.1 TD Rush (RTD) 6
    40+ yard TD rush bonus (RTD40) 1 50+ yard TD rush bonus (RTD50) 2
    2pt Rushing Conversion (2PR) 2 100-199 yard rushing game (RY100) 1
    200+ yard rushing game (RY200) 2

    Receiving
Receiving Yards (REY) 0.1 Each reception (REC) 1
TD Reception (RETD) 6 40+ yard TD rec bonus (RETD40) 1
    50+ yard TD rec bonus (RETD50) 2 2pt Receiving Conversion (2PRE) 2
    100-199 yard receiving game (REY100) 1 200+ yard receiving game (REY200) 2

These are the main differences from the leagues Im used to playing in. I have your rankings for PPR printed and ready to go for the live draft. ESPNs projections favor QB heavily by a lot, but I know take ESPN stuff with a grain of salt… Is getting an elite QB more important early than getting WR and RB? In my mocks and other league, I’ve targeted 2 WR/2 RB or 3 WR/1 RB in the first four rounds playing close attention to value and the guys i really want.

What is the best strategy to target players given these scoring settings?

Sorry for the long question, my first year in a work league with knowledgable guys, $100 buy-in. I want to have a good showing of course. Thanks!

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@ThE sHiT: Yeah, while their inflation is probably do to the format, the increased points for TDs and added completions, I still think it’s a bit much. And I wouldn’t say it’s that much more important, but if you are actually going to pay for a QB, you want to go for an elite one, or find value with guys who throw a good amount of TD’s (Big Ben) or guys who don’t throw too many interceptions (Rivers).

  30. kmda007 says:

    Jay,

First off, I love the articles. Had our draft last night. 10 team, 2QB, PPR, 1 Flex. We keep 3 (You will get them in the round they were drafted (if you drafted them), or half way between the round they were drafted in and the last round (if you got them off the waver wire)). Drafted in the 10 spot.
    1. (10) Aaron Rodgers (GB – QB)
    2. (11) Russell Wilson (Sea – QB)
    3. (30) Randall Cobb (GB – WR)
    4. (31) Carlos Hyde (SF – RB)
    5. (50) Kelvin Benjamin (Car – WR)
    6. (51) Amari Cooper (Oak – WR) – Keep
    7. (70) Todd Gurley (LA – RB) – Keep
    8. (71) Danny Woodhead (SD – RB)
    9. (90) Gary Barnidge (Cle – TE)
    10. (91) Mike Evans (TB – WR) – Keep
    11. (110) DeAngelo Williams (Pit – RB)
    12. (111) Kevin White (Chi – WR)
    13. (130) Christine Michael (Sea – RB)
    14. (131) Dak Prescott (Dal – QB)
    15. (150) Steven Hauschka (Sea – K)
    16. (151) New York (NYJ – DEF)

With the last pick, there was garabage…but there were the top 2 QBs at the turn. With Cooper and Evans as keepers, I didn’t worry about a WR with my top 2 picks. I know that I only get D. Williams for the first few games, but they should be an amazing few games. I also have more faith in C. Michael than most people (I think he’ll finally be the back Seattle thought he was gonna be). Thoughts?

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@kmda007: Thanks man! Yeah, you ran this draft correctly. Getting Rodgers and Wilson, honestly, if they meet their projections and stay healthy, the league is pretty much in the bad. Cobb was a great pick here, and your keepers make your roster pretty stacked man. Better to ask Tehol on Michael, but I think he’ll get his chance, for sure.
