Ray Lewis, Ray Rice

The Ray’s gonna Ray, amiright?

Razzball is usually known for humorous, pun-filled titles that tickle you in all the right places. And at first glance, you may have gone “Jay, where’s the funny brah?”, so I should state for the record that the title actually is a joke. Announced by the league yesterday afternoon, Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice has been suspended for the first two games of the 2014 season for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy following his off-season arrest for domestic violence (from Rice’s altercation with then-fiancée Janay Palmer at an Atlantic City hotel in February, full story here). When the news broke on this in February, I had some thoughts on the matter, and since I try to use my brain at least a few times a day (no promises), I have even more thoughts following yesterday’s news. ALL THE THOUGHTS.

Obviously, since we focus on fantasy football, there’s really no forum here to state that Ray Rice would have to assault seven more women to get the same suspension Josh Gordon received for smokin’ the green. And we can’t really talk about how strange this apology was:

Yes, that’s right Janay. You should totally regret any actions that you took which I’m sure justified you being knocked out unconscious and dragged on the floor. HOW DARE YOU BUY APRICOT JELLY WHEN YOU KNOW I LOVE THAT STRAWBERRY STUFF. And I guess we can’t talk about any lack of jail time. So what can we talk about? Well, that’s 67 yards the Ravens offense will never get back…

In our running back rankings, (Standard, PPR), I was especially very bearish on Ray Rice, and because of that, Bernard Pierce saw an uptick in value with Lorenzo Taliaferro checking in as a legitimate sleeper candidate. This was back when I thought some jail time and an extended suspension made sense for assaulting another human being, but I’m taking crazy pills I guess. Two games isn’t really much, but I’ll tell you what, I’m still not buying Ray Rice, even in the case of a discount. At the end of the day, I just don’t think he’s a very good running back and I don’t think the Ravens offense is a particularly good one. And while I still like Lorenzo Taliaferro as a sleeper to keep an eye on, Rice remains the de facto back in Baltimore, and that means the rest of the depth chart should basically be ignored in standard leagues.

Couldn’t agree more. And while this is a fantasy forum, the bottom line is we all love the game (which is why we spend so much time with roster management, debate, writiting articles and commentary). To see the suspension Rice got is a joke. To then compare that suspension to Josh Gordon…..good lord. The ball was dropped big time.

@One Man Crusade: Obviously, I totally agree. And while it seems like an apples and oranges comparison, on the surface, the disciplinary system in place totally failed.

@Jay: Ray Rice has also never been in trouble on or off the field until one bad night in AC.

Just for purposes of clarification and in no way excusing Ray Rice’s actions, her apology was triggered by the facts that it is undisputed, but consistently under-reported, that she hit him first.

Again, that doesn’t excuse his behavior but it does put the situation in more nuanced context.

@SKI: Fair enough, and nuanced context is always something that should never be ignored. While I don’t condone her actions, the level of response, based on what we know, seems totally out of whack. Especially considering how smug Ray Rice has been with his peers for their own behavior issues.

Let’s also not forget Terrell Pryor was suspended 5 games for accepting free stuff while in college. So apparently that infraction is more than 2 times as bad as hitting a woman with your fist.

@Benny: Yeah, I would say my feelings would be a bit more measured if the disciplinary actions of other offenses were in line with this suspension. Not just some wild scattershot where assault gets you a two game slap on the wrist. Just seems egregious.

@Big League Choo: So that’s the value you would draft those players at?

Very well put. Another great opinion on this matter – Keith Olbermann. If you havent listened to it already, its well worth your time.

    Hey Jay,

Would love your expertise, please! ESPN 10-team standard HTH 2-keeper league:

I have the 8th pick in a snake draft. Which two players would you keep? Charles (1st round), D. Thomas (4th), or Alfred Morris (16th)? (Next year, all of these players would cost a 1st round pick so this question only pertains to this season.)

It seems to me that I have to keep Thomas and Morris based on the draft picks I would have to give up but it is hard to throw back the best RB in the game. Thanks for the help!

@JB: Yeah, under different circumstances, I would keep Charles… but there’s not a *huge* drop-off to Morris when you consider the round savings. I think a 1st Rounder + Morris can top any other combo of Charles + 16th Rounder…

pretty much agree with all that you said,,,however The Ravens a mediocre offense??? I can see them as a legitimate top 10 this season with new OC/ soon to be head coach, lol…, from the Texans and the insertion of Owen Daniels and least not forget the veteran Steve Smith. Bmore has to many legitimate hands now on the offense to bomb, plus their defense is gonna be wicked top 5. Id give them 12 -4 season

It could happen, sure. Just never been a huge Flacco guy. There’s a ceiling there it feels like.
