Woooooo!  The Razzball Writer’s League.  I’m excited, but I’d be even more excited if Tehol’s team butt fumbles his way to a 3-11 record.  I mean who starts their gloating in the 2012 recap with a Lady Gaga quote?

Well through the deal of the dice, or shake of the cards, or something like that, I randomized my way into a first pick (see Draft Results here) and didn’t pull anything crazy and grabbed AP.  Sorry Sky’s rankings!  Although I do like Doug Martin 2.  But after that, it was a tough draft being the swing-around and pounding two beers between picks.  Just like Sky said in his Writer’s League Recap, this is probably my least favorite team I’ve fielded (12-team PPR, same format as RCL Leagues – speaking of start an RCL League today!):

It all started with the swing through 2/3-round picks, where I am still maintaining my abstinence of high-WR reaching and wanted to get a solid RB2.  And that meant I had to grab Frank Gore.  I’m not a Gore fan in the least, but it was either him or DeMarco Murray, David Wilson, or Lamar Miller who all went at the end of the third, so it was Gore or have even worse RB-depth in the 4/5 swing-through.  I’ve come to the conclusion that in 12-team or bigger leagues, I don’t want this first pick at all, it really limited my options.  I may have reached a bit on Aaron Rodgers given my thoughts on him in the QB Preview Podcast, but I figured I wouldn’t get my boyfriend Cam Newton in my 4/5 picks (which I wouldn’t have), and didn’t want to worry about QB down the road even though I like the mid-tier guys.  I don’t like I reached for Rashard Mendenhall either, but he has solid use as my flex, with the optimism this knee issue doesn’t prolong into the season.  It was a bit of a panic pick as I wanted either Daryl Richardson or Ryan Mathews both of which went the immediate two picks before my 4/5 selections.

Final note – love having the GB receivers in Jordy Nelson (love his value) and James Jones (who I think is ranked fine but fell in this draft) to front-line my offense with Rodgers.  I know it will give me a few boom or bust weeks, but with the league’s best passing offense, tough to not like that trio.  As I said in the open, don’t love this team, but it is wildly different than any of my other teams thus far, so it will be an exciting ride.  Feel free to slam it!

FIRST!!! Peterson and Rodgers? that could get you the title alone. That it, if I wasn’t in the league.

is it too early to take gronk with 1st pick of 3rd round….I would have AP and probably a WR like fitzgerald or johnson… 12 team PPR league (1QB, 2RB, 3 WR, TE, D, K)

@jjj: I think that’s a little high for me – haven’t ended up with Gronk on any teams. Like the RB/WR still there at that point

That’s a good looking team, JB. It can be difficult drafting at the corners.
I picked 12, yesterday, in my 12-team money league. It’s a PPR, .5PPRA, Ret Yardage league with 3 IDP slots and a q/w/r/t flex. We start 3WR and 2RB. I would appreciate any and all feedback on my squad.

    1(12) Cam Newton QB1
    2(13) Trent Richardson RB1
    3(36) Darren Sproles RB2
    4(37) Randall Cobb WR1
    5(60) Michael Vick QB2
    6(61) Eddie Lacy RB3
    7(84) DeSean Jackson WR2
    8(85) Tavon Austin WR3
    9(108) Shane Vereen RB4
    10(109) Josh Gordon WR4
    11(132) Brandon Weeden QB3
    12(133) Cordarrelle Patterson WR5
    13(156) Fred Davis TE
    14(157) Luke Kuechly LB

    17(204) Roy Helu RB5
    18(205) Randy Bullock K
    19(228) Kansas City DEF

    Thanks.

@Principle Blackman: Thanks man! Man, intense league. I don’t know IDP virtually at all so he can critique those guys, but love the high upside/ rushing QBs. Not too big on Lacy but where you got him, great value. Like your team

        @JB Gilpin:
Thanks a lot, man. Yeah, I wasn’t all that high on Lacy either, but between the top of the 4th round (I couldn’t pass Cobb there because I’m real high on him in this format) and the bottom of the 5th, a whole lot of RBs that I was targeting around there flew off the board. It was a snap decision between Lacy and Lamar Miller at the 6/7 turn, and I maybe made the wrong choice, but I can probably live with it. At least I don’t hate it.

@Principle Blackman: I like Cobb too if he falls like your draft, I just won’t reach for him. I’m not too sold on Mller too, Id personally lean Lacy as well if it makes you feel better! Hah

Just had espn standard draft……had first pick(ugh)
Only could have 5rb and 5wr on team
    QB. Kapernick,flacco
    RB AP,Wilson,bush,d rich,Bryce brown
    WR A brown,garçon,hilton,givens,randle
    TE. Graham
    DST. Steelers and ravens
    K. Dawson
    Thoughts?
Draft was tough in that position

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Steve: Yea I was surprised how tough the draft was in this one, and glad others tend to agree. Love that you were able to get Graham, he didn’t quite make it to me in this draft on the 2/3. Not in love with your WRs, haven’t ended up with Brown or Garçon in any leagues, but they definitely have some upside. If any of Wilson/Bush/D Rich have huge week 1s, I would look to trade one for a top WR on a team with bad RBs.

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

Garçon needs to hit for your WRs to be a good group. It’s why I try not to take Graham anywhere, creates either WR or RB problems. The rest of your team looks good though. Just need Pierre to become a top 15 WR

  6. Alex says:
    (link)

JB, maybe you can help me out…you’re a proponent of streaming D’s right?

    1. (1) Adrian Peterson RB
    2. (28) Brandon Marshall WR
    3. (29) Reggie Bush RB
    4. (56) Darren Sproles RB
    5. (57) Pierre Garcon WR
    6. (84) Michael Vick QB
    7. (85) Cecil Shorts WR
    8. (112) Chris Ivory RB
    9. (113) Vincent Brown WR
    10. (140) Shane Vereen RB
    11. (141) Jordan Cameron TE
    12. (168) Josh Brown K
    13. (169) Justin Blackmon WR
    14. (196) Arizona DEF
    15. (197) Julius Thomas TE
    16. (224) Terrelle Pryor QB

    So that’s my team, it’s 1/2ppr. 14 guys, H2H

I made a comment on one of Sky’s posts saying I had to step away after the Blackmon pick, and autopicked the last 3 picks. I figured I would drop all three for Indy D and whatever was left on the waiver wire.

The issue is, looking at how the rest of the draft played out, the ONLY starting QB left in my league is Jake Locker, so I’m kinda worried about dropping Pryor for a RB/WR option and ending up with no QB if Vick gets hurt.

Likewise, there’s two guys who seem to be hoarding TEs (weird right?) both guys have 4 (FOUR!?) TEs on their team, so again I’m worried about injury issues.

The only surefire pickup would be Indy D, the top WRs are guys like Santonio and Burleson, RBs are Helu and Tolbert…so it’s not like there’s any super upside plays (at least from what I can see)

Should I even bother with the moves (aside from dropping Zona D for Indy D, which I also am waffling on because Zona D doesn’t seem too bad)? Or just stay with the status quo and hold the extra QB and TE for injury concerns?

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Alex: Yea I like streaming Ds but Id hold Zona’s D right now over dropping and picking up Colts D. Think Thomas is your most expandable, he has a little upside, but a lot of TEs in Denver. I might actually drop him for Indy D to play week 1 thinking about it

Holy backup WR’s batman! Ha, you have plenty of depth at wideout JB. I like your team. Your team will be difficult to beat on the weeks where Green Bay puts up some points. It’s not the worst thing to have Aaron Rodgers on your team, even if QB is deep. You gotta take what is given to ya.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Shake N Bacon: Haha thanks man! Hoping one of those WRs hits to be a flex play or trade option a few weeks in. The Hillman pick looks like a bust two weeks since the draft, so will need some RB depth at some point. Yup that was my thought exactly, I liked getting Rodgers there it was just the Gore selection that high I didn’t love. Not that I think he should’ve gone much lower but I’m just not too high on him. Thanks for reading!

      • Shake N Bacon says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: Yeah it looks like your other choices at that point (Gore) were Sproles and David Wilson. Of course this draft happened before the Andre Brown news, so who knew.

I have my first RCL draft tonight. 1st pick baby!

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:

@Shake N Bacon: Yea Sproles since a PPR would’ve been nice. Still not a David Wilson believer. I still have the hate! Good luck tonight man!

  8. Shake N Bacon says:

OK JB, here’s my first ever RB fantasy football draft. 12-team, H2H, PPR. How’d I do?

    (1) Adrian Peterson
    (24) Maurice Jones-Drew
    (25) Demaryius Thomas
    (48) Marques Colston
    (49) Jordy Nelson
    (72) Robert Griffin III
    (73) Isaac Redman
    (96) Kenny Britt
    (97) Jared Cook
    (120) Brian Hartline
    (121) Roy Helu
    (144) Quinton Patton
    (145) Michael Bush
    (168) Markus Wheaton

Instead of taking Jordy Nelson at the turn, I should’ve gone after Ryan Mathews or Chris Ivory. Instead I got stuck with Redman and wasn’t even able to handcuff him with Bell. That was my biggest regret.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Shake N Bacon: Not bad! I’m not big on RGIII this year, but you got him in a fine spot. Love that MJD fell to you there. Yeah I woulda taken Mathews probably, but I like Nelson’s value around there, people are sleeping on him a bit too much.

      • Shake N Bacon says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: I typically never use a WR in a flex spot (always RB). I’m not real happy with my decision to go with Jordy at that point.

Hopefully MJD has a nice bounceback year. I’m loving me some RG3 this year. I may be in for a world of hurt though.

Thanks for taking a look at my team.

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:

@Shake N Bacon: Yea I agree, I usually want RBs there. No prob good luck this year!

  9. Goldschmidt On Her Chest says:

Uh oh start em sit ems for week 1! So close I can taste it.
Cook vs Cardinals or Julius Thomas vs Baltimore. I decides to get thomas in all my leagues sunday. I really like thechance of defenses semi forgetting about him with all the other star power there and that he has some jump cause he used to play basketball (new antonio gates?)
    Then at RB
    Ridley vs Buf
    MJD vs KC
    Whatcha think??

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:

@Goldschmidt On Her Chest: Last second decisions is coming for a third straight year sunday mornings! I’m pumped. I’d still go Cook. Not buying the Thomas yet, don’t mind him as a stash, but don’t trust him to start over Cook yet. Close one, think I might go MJD, NE could blow Buffalo out and start using a lot of Vereen/Bolden late.

      • Goldschmidt On Her Chest says:
        (link)

@JB Gilpin: yea I have MJD in there now. The Thomas thing may also be me trying to concvince myself to start someone Thursday cause I just can’t wait til Sunday!

        • JB Gilpin

          JB Gilpin says:
          (link)

@Goldschmidt On Her Chest: Haha I hear ya man! I think taking the wait-and-see approach will be the way to go though, you actually get to see a whole game of him out there, see how much he’s on the field and if he’s the #1 target in some situations, then decide if he’s who you wanna roll with from there. Can’t wait either! I have virtually no Broncos or Ravens across 6-7 leagues…

          • Goldschmidt On Her Chest says:
            (link)

@JB Gilpin: yea that’s a good call. May still get ballsy come 7:58 and roll him out there. Ha. I have 2 broncos in Thomas and Moreno. But shouldn’t start either of them honestly. And somehow in 3 leagues I’m not facing a single raven or bronco. Ha

  10. Clint (aka Pablo Death) says:
    (link)

I like the Nelson pick. People seem to have totally forgotten the sympatico relationship he had with A-Rod when healthy even with Cobb around. Cobb’s gotten all the hype despite that (why other than A-Rod’s news headline re him being capable of catching 100 balls, I dunno) so Nelson’s the forgotten man and has fallen nicely in drafts. Assuming he stays healthy which looks good too since he played the last preseason game & is ready for week 1, I think he’s the true #1 in GB.

I don’t know about the Mike Williams pick, though. Given the reports out of Bucs preseason that Freeman’s stinking up the joint so much they actually were considering Gammon to replace him at some point, his production could be a problem.

    • JB Gilpin

      JB Gilpin says:
      (link)

@Clint (aka Pablo Death): Thanks man! Yea I loved the value there – and have ended up with him on a few teams with people passing him up. Agree – besides Gore who actually was decent-ish value – that was my least favorite pick, but didn’t like anything else around there. Have a lot of upside WR on my bench, just need one to hit.

  11. bryan says:

Am I crazy to consider starting Vick over Luck week 1?

I think Vick will be playing in a shoot out Monday night, and I think the Colts blow out Oakland and don’t need much from Luck.

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

Not crazy but the flipside is that even if he only plays 3 quarters, you could be missing out on a great game from Luck. You’ve got a great problem there but I’d lean Luck unless I needed upside.

@bryan: Agree with what Sky said as he tried to take over my comments! I don’t think it’s crazy at all, might actually do it, unless you are in a matchup where you feel you’d win pretty handily without Vick’s upside – then I’d go Luck.

Im projected by yahoo to lose by 1pt…So its a close matchup.
