Don't be shellfish...Tweet about this on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on Google+Share on Reddit

Yeah, yeah, you’ve heard that lead in title before.  Whatever, you don’t really come for weekly rankings for the jokes do you?  You do?  Fine, a guy goes to the doctor and tells him ‘Doc, ya gotta help me.  I keep having weird dreams.  Last night I dreamt I was a Wigwam and the night prior I dreamt I was a TeePee.  What’s wrong?’ and the Doc says, ‘That’s easy.  You’re two tents.’  RIMSHOT!  Ok, jokes over kids time for the meat and potatoes and the first week of the rest of your 2013 Fantasy Football lives and I only have one question for you that I won’t even type, you’ve just got to click the link.  I have put Jamaal Charles as the top RB for week 1 because it’s against the Jaguars.  Is that me betting on KC or betting against Jacksonville?  I’d say the latter.  Though every year is different and we can’t assume Jacksonville will finish in the bottom 5 in yards allowed to opposing running backs again, I think KC does well enough to give JC Superstar his touches and he’s got a good shot to torch JAX for week 1.  Outside of that, I wouldn’t say my rankings go too crazy.  I have little belief that either Ryan can turn around that Saints defense enough not to rank the two big wideouts from the Falcons in the high at wideout.  My surprise pick this week might be Celek in the top 12 TEs for the week.  His preseason was fairly under the radar but he was used a lot in the passing game.  If that keeps up, he could be your first TE stream for the year and maybe more.  But enough of all that, let’s get this party started.  Here’s the weekly rankings for week 1 of the 2013 Fantasy Football season…

    Hillman or Stepfan Taylor?

It is a 16-team league with contracts and I took over a team with a poor RB corps. So that is why Taylor is being considered for my #2 RB slot in Week 1.

      • Wallpaper Paterson says:

@Sky: Spencer Ware and Mike James are next in line!

@Wallpaper Paterson: More ouch but if you wanna go crazy upside, the ‘hawks might just flat out kill the Panthers. Could see a Ware TD late.

  2. RG3 Needs a Knee says:
    (link)

    Hey Sky,
10 team PPR keeper league…We play 3 WR and 1 flex..Current receivers are as follows:
    AJohnson
    Roddy White
    Steve Johnson
    Tavon Austin
Q Patton (just dropped Sidney Rice for him)
    Kenny Britt

Would you lose Britt or Patton to stash Harvin?

      @RG3 Needs a Knee
      Also have Cecil Shorts

      • Sky

        Sky says:
        (link)

@RG3 Needs a Knee: Nah, that whole Harvin news thing came from Percy himself. He wants to play. All athletes want to play and will say they’re ready ahead of schedule to do it. Let your bench play out and then make that decision in two or three weeks.

  3. Nightpandas says:

Do you like Ballard or Nicks as my flex play for Week 1 (.5 PPR)?

    • Sky

@Nightpandas: No, depth charts mean very little right now. Go with Nicks.

  4. theevilempire says:

Is the reason for ranking Lamar Miller and D. Wilson so low this week due to the fact that they are unproven?

I’m having a tough go of choosing who to start in Dynasty. 2 RB and a Flex. I think MJD has a great matchup so I’m confident starting him. The tough choice comes in picking 2 out of:

    Arian Foster
    David Wilson
    Lamar Miller
    Alfred Morris

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@theevilempire: They’re in range with where I ranked them before the season started. Think Cleveland is a reasonable defense, better then people give them credit for and it’s a road game. Tough, I ranked them similar. Foster then MJD would make sense. Wilson/Morris is a coinflip. If Washington gets a huge lead in that game, he’ll grind the clock down but I don’t think we see that. I’d give David Wilson the nod.

  5. Natural Born Champs says:

    Hi Sky,
If gabbert is out should i play d.hopkins or hartline as my flex? Ppr league.
    Thanx

If Gabbert is out, Shorts gets a bump in value. Henne is just better.@Natural Born Champs:

    Standard Scoring, NON-PPR

I need to start two of the following:

    Steve Smith vs SEA
    Golden Tate @ CAR
    Kenbrell Thompkins @ BUF
    Cecil Shorts vs KC

I know Smith doesn’t have a good matchup. Thompkins is a bit of a question mark. In your rankings you have Smith, Tate and Shorts all next to each other. Am I crazy for starting Shorts and Thompkins this week?

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@JD: Not at all. Rankings only say so much about how to formulate a lineup. You gotta throw some upside out there and see what you get.

  7. RG3 Needs a Knee says:
    (link)

Pick two to start in a PPR leage :

    Bradshaw
    DMac
    Woodhead
    Redman
    Ivory

Another question. I was looking back at your rankings and when drafting, I decided to take Ivory over Sproles in my PPR league. What was the reason for the difference in rankings? Was it because of the crowded Saints backfield?

Seems as though Sproles would have been a better grab in the same round but you are high on Ivory where others appear to have Sproles ranked higher in weekly match-ups. Really hoping I didn’t make too much of a mistake there.

    Thanks

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

      @RG3 Needs a Knee: Dmac/Ivory

I had him higher because he’s still going to be the bellcow in that offense. Love Sproles in a PPR but I see Ivory as Lynch-lite, even being part of Gang Green Nation. The upside’s still there, give it some time.

  8. Rags says:
    (link)

In a league that awards kick return yardage for D/ST as well as tackles for a loss (instead of just sacks). Ari vs StL or Ind vs Oak. With the return yardage bonus, is Ari good enough to hold on to?

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@Rags: I’d want to play weekly matchups on DEF and Indy still makes sense there, especially with an unproven QB in the backfield who can’t throw.

      1) Admittedly, the Hopkins news broke late enough that I didn’t update my rankings to reflect it. Go DeAndre

      2) Both facing tough run D’s this week. Just hold.

  15. Mr. Rickey says:
    (link)

    I need to start 2 RBs, 2 WRs and 1 RB/WR – I was planning on:
    Jamal Charles
    MJD
    Julio Jones
    Colston
    Nicks
But, also have: Ivory, Britt, Vereen and Bryce Brown. Would you make any changes?

Also, I drafted Pead late as a flyer but I’m having second thoughts that I should have grabbed Knile Davis as a handcuff to JC. Would you make that move or see if Pead does anything in Week 2?

    Thanks.

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@Mr. Rickey: Nah, go with what you’ve set.

Wait and see on Pead. D-Rich might underwhelm. Not saying I think he will, just rather have a guy who has a shot at a role that has nothing to do with an injury to make it happen.

  17. Mikey says:
    (link)

I’m still trying to separate playing Miller or Vereen this weekend. Head says Miller against a not-so-hot Cleveland run D in his first start, but gut says the Gronk-less Pats are going to try to run all over Buffalo and Shane could be in for a score either on the ground or air. Your thoughts?

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@Mikey: Yeah, I have them pretty close. The Pats are such a well oiled machine…Miller for steady/reliable and Vereen for junk time beauty. Really a question of what your offense as a whole needs but in general I’d lean Miller.

  18. Shake N Bacon says:
    (link)

I’m loving me some Jamaal Charles and MJD this week!

I’m not too familiar with Atlanta’s defense this year (primarily their secondary) but I was a little surprised to see Marques Colston ranked so low. I’m thinking this game will be a high scoring shoot out. I know the Saints have a lot of options on offense.

Would you drop Pettigrew for Dwayne “The Rock” Allen or Celek for week one?

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@Shake N Bacon: Just some plays I liked more this week was all. You’ll notice all year Colston will rarely break my top 12 but he never falls out of the top 20 for WR. He’s just solid all around but rarely gives you big weeks.

I’d drop Pettigrew for Miley Cyrus (Hint: I don’t like Miley Cyrus). Give Celek a go. I’m thinking that game is gonna be a barn burner and Celek has had a very under the radar PPR preseason.

      • Shake N Bacon says:
        (link)

@Sky: I’m excited to see what the Eagles do this year. I’m willing to take a chance on Celek. Pettigrew will probably be available to pick back up if I end up not liking what I see from Celek.

I’m twerking all the way to the waiver wire for Celek.

Yeah I know what you mean about Colston. He’s a solid WR2 every week. I’m hoping for a big first week from him though. Going against PreZi!!!

        • Sky

          Sky says:
          (link)

Pettigrew is so overrated at this point. By the end of the year, there’ll be a top 10 TE list and out of those, probably only 4 to 5 will be guys you start every week regardless. Petti won’t be one of those guys. Celek probably won’t be either but I’d rather stream then sit on a particular guy who doesn’t look like a top 4-5’er. Twerk away, just don’t loll your tongue out like Miley did!

Colston could definitely go off. I’ll personally hope for it so you can take down the Prez!

          • Shake N Bacon says:
            (link)

@Sky: Do you think Jared Cook would be one of those top 4-5 TE’s that are starts every week? Tennessee didn’t seem to use him as much as they should have. Friggin Nate Washington was targeted every damn time in the end zone last year.

            • Sky

              Sky says:
              (link)

I really do think he could be one of them. He’s had a good preseason and looks like they’re actually willing to use him in STL

@Sky: thank you. I do have cecil shorts as my flex. If gabbert misses the game should i start hartline or d.hopkins over shorts? Ppr league.
        Thanks again

        • Sky

          Sky says:
          (link)

Actually, Henne was pretty good with Shorts last year, too. Think you can stick with him but if you’re leery, I’d take Hopkins upside.

  21. Baren says:
    (link)

WR 2: Colston or M. Austin?

Romo typically does well against the G-Men and Austin looks like a sneaky upside play, while Colston I think has a safer floor.

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

I think your statement is correct. Depends on what you need: safe vs upside and how it fits into your lineup. I like Colston still.

  22. Ron says:
    (link)

CLARIFICATION NEEDED: Sky, you answered my 3 questions last night but I think you may have misread the format. Just to recap, I included the 3 questions and your 3 answers right below them. My league is 12-team .5PPR.

Just looking for clarication cause the offers are on the table. I can only start a maximum of 2 RB’s each week (Forte and S. Jax). The other flex spot is a WR/TE (Garcon). Based on this, how would you change your answer to the 3 questions?

    The Questions:
    1) I was offered RGIII for Garcon straght-up. Based on the team I have and positions we play, should I take this deal?
    2) Should I trade one of my bench RB’s for Steve Smith? If so, in what order would you trade them?
    3) Would the answer to #1 change if I did trade one of my bench RB’s for Steve Smith?

    Sky’s Response on 9/4:
    1) Yes please and thank you. I love Garcon but you should be starting one of your RBs in that slot.
    2) Not a chance. Hold onto them
    3) Not in a million years. Steve Smith is a WR3 this year. You’re starting 2 WR1s and can start 3 solid backs a week. No need. You look really primed for a run with RG3 at the helm.

    QB: Eli Manning
    RB: Forte
    WR: Dez Bryant
    WR: AJ Green
    RB/WR: S. Jax
    WR/TE: Garcon
    DST: Ravens

    BN: D. Richardson

mornin, sky! got a few things i wanted to run by you real quick, in spots where i’m going against your rankings (non-ppr):

    – choosing bradshaw vs. oak over ivory vs the bucs. i don’t think either will actually get a lot of carries, but bradshaw practiced in full yesterday, and obvz has a better chance at breaking off one or two good runs against oak, than ivory does against tb. thoughts?

    – choosing t.y. hilton over stevie johnson, also mostly cause of oakland, partly bc of buffalo qb iffyness. that’s reasonable, right?

    – my pick this year for “week 1 ogletree” is marlon brown, who you don’t have ranked. thinking of playing him as my wr2 over k. thompkins in a 14-team league this week. is that just the dumbest shit, or actually worth trying? my wr1 is jordy nelson in that league, but i’m stacked at rb so i think i’ll put up a good score no matter what.

good luck to you this week!

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

My only concern with Bradshaw is that game turns into a laugher quick. They brought him in to win, not to pad his stats. I think Ivory will get his touches and the game will be close enough he won’t get out of the flow of the game.

EJ Manuel is set to be the starter and they’ll most likely be playing from behind. TY is in Ahmad’s problematic situation of maybe only playing a half to 3 quarters. Stevie should be out there the whole game. Like his floor.

There’s always somebody out there that surprises week 1 and falls to obscurity week 2. Could be him but I wouldn’t want to find out if he is in my starting lineup. Thompkins is still the guy for me there.

Always love your articles / rankings.

I’m in a bit of a predicament this week.

I drafted Ivory as my flex spot in a 0.5 PPR league, but I feel like it may take a few games to shake down whats going on in the jet’s backfield.

My question is in my Flex spot, do I role with Ivory or go with Kyle Rudolph.
I have Sudfeld slated as my TE.

My only qualm is Alfred Morris being so low…16th eh?

Philly offense moving so quickly means more possessions for the Redskins. And with RG3 starting, Shanahan will want to play it safe with plenty of handoffs to Alf. I think he has at least a top 10 performance this week against the Iggles.

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

Lotta good RBs out there. Always makes it look like you hate someone when in reality if you could rank guys at say #4 three times, you’d look a bit more sane.

The flipside to that argument is that they’re down two touchdowns early and have to go to the air to catch up and Morris doesn’t play in the passing game. Redskins need to be close enough that the run game with Morris works. Like I said above, though, rankings don’t always say whether you hate or like a player as much as others may think.

I drafted in a 12 team 1 ppr league and it was my first and last snake draft of the year. My team is way unbalanced, i watched jordy nelson, decker, D jax, hilton, miles austin, stevie johnson get sniped a couple picks b4 me so ended up taking the best available talent i.e. pierce, michael and back to back qbs in 5/6 rds. Anywho just wondering if i drafted enough upside at wr to make up for lack of proven wrs.

      Sky says:

Hrm, you’re really going to need Gordon to perform up to his potential and it’s hard to tell why you took two QBs like Cam and RG3. You need to trade one or the other for a WR. I’m not seeing the RB depth that typically goes with that type of receiving group either. I’d be a bit worried about this team. You’ll need to be the first guy picking up those hot RB plays all year until you find what you need.

  30. the imp says:
    (link)

    Hey Sky,
Having drunk the upside Cool-Aid for TE , I am almost prepared to buy in on the lack of QB2 philosophy. Currently, I have Vick behind RG3. I drafted Vick because RG3 wasn’t 100% cleared on draft day, RG3 is a running QB who could get hurt, Vick could take off big time, and I could probably trade him for a good player in our QB loving league if he takes off.

How good of a WR5 prospect (3 starters, PPR) you would want to kick Vick off the squad as my QB2?
    current QBs: RG3, Vick

Since you’ve drafted him, you’ll need to trade him. Hold through Monday, see what you have. Hopefully he goes off and someone else’s QBs flounder. Sell then for a WR rather than dropping him outright.

What iz with this Bullshizz from Indy that they are going to run the ball more and use 2 Wr sets and that Hilton will get no love. WTF are they thinking up there, that DHB is the guy to take them to the next level and leave Hilton holding his jockstrap on the sidelines til they get some obvious passing downs. Wouldn’t Hilton be that threat that would cause defenses to play differently……Sorry I’m just rambling, not even sure what i just wrote and am on my third cup in the last hour…..great rankings too, really helped me grab my kicker for the week

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

      Ha! Wait, I ranked kickers…?

Yeah, preseason BS. They brought in Ahmad to run the ball better which will help Luck. They’re not a ground and pound team like HOU/NYJ. And DHB will be solid yet unspectacular. A couple big plays by T.Y. and we’ll all forget this silliness.

That would require me to still think about kicker so…NOPE!

          • Jack Full of Hate says:
            (link)

@Sky: shake the industry up, it’s like team defense, listening to people talk about that is like being at an insurance seminar, which I have been too on many occasions and have dozed off at.

At least with team defenses there’s SOME strategy. Can’t ever plan for a pick-6 but you can plan on a team taking down the Raiders offense pretty much any week. But when will Seabass go 3/3 on his 50 yard attempts? Who cares!

So, assuming I go with a QB for my QB/RB/WR/TE spot, I have a choice between the proverbial turd sandwich and the douchebag of Cutler or Palmer, Sky. Assuming you wouldn’t advocate any of the following in their stead for my PPR league that allows 5pts/TD for QB’s and 6pts/TD for anyone else:

    QB: Ryan (QB1), Cutler, Palmer
RB: Charles (RB1), CJ2K (RB2), Sproles (flex), Bradshaw, Ivory, Vereen
WR: Megatron (WR1), Cobb (WR2), Nicks, Britt, Stevie Johnson

Thanks for these weekly rankings, really helpful tool. I got a trade offer I was wondering if I could get your 2 cents on (or anyone else’s). I’m in a 14-team non-PPR keeper league where I had no keepers and picked 14th, so the situation is a bit dire. Right now I have

    QB – Bradford
RB – S-Jax, Bush, Sproles (flex); Bench: BenJarvus
WR – Decker, Wallace, Jennings; Bench: Britt, Hartline, Thompkins
    TE – Housler

I was offered Andrew Luck for Mike Wallace. It does make sense, I think, but without a true WR 1 I’m nervous about chipping at my reasonable depth before the season starts. I’m also not a huge Luck fan and I think Bradford has a real chance at providing only slightly worse production (although that’s probably a minority view). Am I crazy for holding here?

    • Sky

      Sky says:

I’d hold for now and see what you get from Bradford. First week should be a decent test. Then go from there.

Hey Sky, thanks for answering all these questions. Here’s mine if you got time.
I am in a 2QB league and have Sam Bradford as my backup. If he can’t score me good points I will be looking to make a trade. Question is how much time do I give the kid?

    • Barbarian says:
      (link)

@Barbarian: Well it shows me for asking a question THEN reading your rankings.
I also picked up Weeden to stream with Bradford. I put Bradford in this week because I think he is more talented. I also like Bradford’s matchup vs Arizona better then Weeden vs Mia. I see you have Weeden ranked slightly higher. Is it more of a coinflip or do you feel strongly in favor of Weeden this week?

      • Sky

        Sky says:
        (link)

More a coinflip. I actually like both guys to varying degrees this year. Just think Bradford has the harder go this week overall.

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

In a 2QB league, you gotta give him at least 2 or 3 games. His first game will be tough; should show you a bit of what he can/can’t do in my opinion.

      • Barbarian says:
        (link)

@Sky:A@Sky: Appreciate the input. I’ll be watching closely for sure.

Just for the sake of conversation; The reason I like the matchup with Arizona is because of the significant upgrade(Palmer) the Cardinals made in the passing game. I get the feeling that Arizona will be looking for quick scores and be looking to put up lopsided numbers. Hopefully that will give Bradford more possession and get him trying to play catchup.
Meanwhile, Miami may be looking to play their usual run-run-pass every 3 downs and try to drain out the clock at all costs.

        • Sky

          Sky says:
          (link)

I could see that but STL’s defense is very good. It wasn’t just bad QB play that hurt AZ last year. Kolb actually performed before that O-Line broke him. That problem hasn’t changed. I see a good defensive struggle with STL winning in the end with a better offense overall.

        @Sky:

Appreciate the advice. I have an empty spot due to drafting Dwyer. I’m considering trading Eli and Amendola for Vick and Gronk. TE (Sudfeld) and QB (Eli/Big Ben) are my weakest positions and I have Cobb/Decker/Thompkins/Hartline at WR. We start 3, but if I pick up one of the previously mentioned WR, think I’ll have enough to get by? Or should I stand pat with Amendola? Not much available at TE on the waiver wire.

Would you start the wildly inconsistent V. Davis or the unknown in Kenbrell Thompkins in a WR/TE slot? Also, in another league at flex, who do you like best out of Ivory, Thompkins and TY Hilton? Thanks!

Give Kenbrell a shot. Could be a blowout fast and we know how much Hoodie loves to run up the score.

      I’ll take Thompkins for matchup/upside/Hoodie-geddon.

With Roddy’s role in question today, so I take a chance and sit him for Lance Moore? Or do I still go with White? Thanks in advance

@diaperman: Gotta go with upside of Roddy there but I understand your reasoning.
