What’s the most important rule to the game of Roshambo?  Always go first.  If you haven’t learned that one yet, talk with a friend about playing and ask to go second.  You’ll learn quickly.  Wanna know what else you can learn quickly?  That the Chargers defense isn’t very good in the secondary.  Wanna know how bad they’ve been?  First off, they’ve given up the most passing yards to opposing teams this year with 1,022.  Yes, they’re beating out the Eagles and the Redskins in that race to the bottom stat so far.  Hard to believe, but they actually gave up a near 300 yard passing game to Jake Locker at 299.  Locker has 572 total passing yards on the year including that game.  You do the math and you’ll find the anomaly pretty quickly there.  So for this reason and for A-Rod and Cam out on bye weeks, I have Tony Romo as my third best QB right behind Brees.  I don’t see why he can’t treat his owners to his own 300 yard passing game and, say, 2 or 3 TDs.  As they say in San Diego, ’60% of the time, it works every time’ to which Jaywrong usually responds in Burgundese.  Outside of Tony, I’m seeing the ‘you’re crazy’ markers next to my Tannehill and Dalton rankings via ECR.   That also applies to my Moreno call but I think he’ll play better rock, paper, scissors this week I guess.  Apparently my Chris Givens love never dies either and somehow Rod Streater is gonna blow up this week according to my rankings as well.  And apparently I’m the only one who’s figured out that the SF defense hasn’t been good for a while now as I’ve moved them down to ‘take’um or leave’um’ territory down by the Texans.  I don’t know what my kickers look like, you’ll have to tell me.  I have 1,000 trained mice whom I have picking grains of rice out of a bag with names like ‘Walsh’ and ‘Hartley’ on them.  It’s a complicated process but at least it’s a process!  More time spent on them than other ‘perts, most likely, to say the least.  But enough fluff, on with the show.  Here’s your week 4 rankings for the 2013 Fantasy Football Season…

Want your thoughts on a keeper league deal….I shipped Witten and deangelo Williams for flee near, David Wilson and 2014 3rd round pick. My starting TE is Jordan Cameron and my 3 rb are muscle hamster, spiller and s-jax. My thinking is if Cameron does get hurt I can use fleener and play the wire…..just not sure if I have too much faith in wilson

@One Man Crusade: Trade makes sense for a keeper league. Go for it.

  2. Justin says:
    (link)

Hey man great work as always, Im thinking Woodhead should be ranked a little higher. He looks to be gaining more snaps a game, and is one of Rivers fav targets. In PPR leagues he will be more valuable then players like McFadden BJGE and others..

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@Justin: He finished as the 25th best back last week in PPR leagues. Don’t think you should hang your hat on him after one week of production and say he’s better than DMC.

      • Justin says:
        (link)

        @Sky:

I wasn’t trying to tell you how to do you job sky, it was just an observation. I didn’t mean for it to sound dickish. My apologies. I didn’t realize he was only the 25 best rb in ppr. I learned my lesson on this one. Thanks again for the insight and the clarification.

        • Sky

          Sky says:
          (link)

@Justin: Never took it that way, was just giving clarification of why I’m not that high on him. Don’t think even if Mathews goes down he takes on much larger of a role. He’s good in a limited capacity but he’s not a 20-25 touch guy.

    • CramYourCatcherQuestionUpYourCramhole says:
      (link)

@Justin: You go ahead and put Woodhead a little higher on your website rankings.

  3. Cooper Clux Clan says:

Morning Sky : Who are you starting as RB2 this week, Snelling or Fred Jackson? Seems like nobody is buying FJax and he continues to make Spiller owners look foolish.

  4. Derrick says:
    (link)

Decker or J. Bell in the flex spot in a PPR league?

    Thanks!

    • @Derrick: Go Joique. He’s getting like 9 touches per game (mostly through the air), even with a healthy Bush. Bush has a sleeve on his knee, last I heard. Joique should be good for at least 12+ pts in a ppr. Factor in his vulch-potency, too.

  5. Nightpandas says:
    (link)

Solid as usual Sky….no kitty can’t have any of my pot pie!

Here comes the first of many flex questions today:

For this week: Hartline, Snelling or Gronk? (Might be two answers depending on whether he starts)

    .5 ppr 10 teams

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

      @Nightpandas: NO KITTY THAT’S A BAD KITTY!

Yeah, if Gronk starts, I want him. If not, I’ll say Snelling

  6. HansC says:

    Morning,

Harline or Snelling for FLEX Spot?

    Thanks!

    • Sky

@Dave: Rams ranked higher if you look at Sky’s list

  9. JustWinIt says:
    (link)

PPR League. I have Mendenhall sitting on my bench since I have 5 RB’s. Thinking of picking up Percy Harvin as week 7 hopeful return before someone else snags him up. Do you think he has a chance of contributing, and if so, sooner than later?

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@JustWinIt: If he’s returning week 7, it’s a limited return. Think it’s more reasonable to count on production from him later, probably after week 10.

  10. fitz says:
    (link)

Sky, do you like either of these deals in a PPR?

I trade MJD, Tavon Austin for Sproles, Amendola

I trade Forte, Tavon Austin for T-Rich, Amendola

    thanks for the help

    • Sky

Not a rankings question but hoping to get an opinion or two:

Own both DeMarco Murray and Frank Gore. Can obtain either Lance Dunbar or Kendall Hunter in a trade. Price for each is the same. Which is the better to own?

  12. Bubba38 says:
    (link)

Why me??? Why do I punt on QB’s every year just to torture myself with having to choose between Manning and Bradford??? WTF. What’s the consensus? Thanks.

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@Bubba38: Cuz it’s fun! I assume you’re wondering what others think of who to start besides me since I ranked them in my rankings above.

      • Bubba38 says:
        (link)

@Sky: Haha, I do put credit in your rankings but there isn’t a lot of difference. I’m leaning towards Eli but after last weeks debacle I’ve lost a lot of faith in him. And then there’s the question of whether SF’s defense will show and if KC’s defense is for real. I think I’ll go Eli. Until I change my mind…again.

        • Sky

          Sky says:
          (link)

@Bubba38: Ha! SF’s defense isn’t intimidating but TNF is known for not being pretty for fantasy owners usually. I believe in the KC defense. The Dallas game was the proving ground for me.

          • Bubba38 says:
            (link)

@Sky: So, you’ve just contradicted yourself and made me even more unsure. LOL. I’m going with Eli Bradford. I mean Sam Manning.

              Sky says:
              (link)

Bahaha, I did! THey’re close for me this week. Storylines across the board could be written why one or the other is better. I think you get Eli bounceback this week but I think they could both end up with 2TDs and 2 picks with 250. Even the consensus on fantasypros has them right next to eachother.

              • Bubba38 says:
                (link)

  13. Far Beyond Driven says:

In a related note, I would love if Razzball had a “Handcuffs Feature” – list each NFL team, and score the variables going into deciding handcuffs:

    1) Player’s skill independent of team (high for Ben Tate, low for Jackie Battle, for example);
    2) Incumbent’s injury history/likelihood of going down (high for DeMarco Murray, low for Alfred Morris, for example);
    3) Offensive line grade (high for good running teams, low for poor running teams);
    4) Likelihood of full-time carries in event of injury/promotion (some RB’s will take over, other RB’s will revert to a timeshare)
    5) Team’s schedule vs. running teams rest of the year.
    6) Anything else I’m missing

I think it could be an interesting feature; Razzball baseball ranks handcuffs for CL, and I think it’s an interesting focus in FFB but where football has a few more variables to look at (which readers can decipher or perceive differently).

Just a thought. Keep up the good work. Thanks.

    • Sky

      Sky says:

@Kobayashi Maru: He hasn’t been bad, Baltimore is 4th in total rushing yards allowed this year…

  18. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

    Yo Sky,

You have Moreno above Gio in your PPR rankings. You told me to start Gio and Gordon over him in my 0.5 PPR. Still going with that? My gut says so, but just wondering your opinion. Thanks, brah.

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@Wilsonian: You asked before I had ranked, it happens. Moreno could’ve had a reasonable week last week if he’d won rock/paper/scissors it sounds like. Think he catches a few more passes and nets a touchdown. They’re close enough in rankings that I don’t think there’s a huge enough difference. They’re both very TD dependent for fantasy value.

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

@Sky: Oh yeah, I’m not mad atcha, just wondering if something changed overnight in your mind. My gut still says Gio and Gordon, but there’s something about Moreno in that offense. Makes me feel like he’s due for a 20-30 point night at any time.

        • Sky

          Sky says:
          (link)

Yeah, that’s the thing with the Denver crew: even Moreno as a starter just can’t guarantee fantasy success. One week he scores 2 TDs, next week he leads the team in touches but has the least amount of points. So hard to predict week to week. Just think Moreno has a shot at a very strong week but I wouldn’t hate you if you went Gio.

          • Wilsonian says:
            (link)

@Sky: so just to pick your brain one more time… I like Gio, makes me feel good thinking (albeit incorrectly) I have an Italian on my team due to my heritage. I think I should leave him in there. Would you play Moreno over Gordon then with Gordon going against the much more difficult D compared to the Mini Soda Vickies last week? 0.5 PPR, 3 point bonus at 85 yards receiving/100 yards rushing, 6 point bonus at 135 yards receiving/150 yards rushing, 6 points per TD.

            • Sky

              Sky says:
              (link)

It’s tough but I think Gordon will get enough targets to make up for the bad matchup. Always rough sitting the guy who just went off for a guy who underperformed. I think they’re all three crapshoots in their own way, though, for varying reasons.

  19. Captain Kirk says:

    • willy says:

@willy: And if Terrelle does play, I assume based on the rankings it’s a no brainer to start him over Russell Wilson?

      • Sky

        Sky says:
        (link)

@willy: Not confident he does play but have to rank him like he is. He’s running the ball well and has shown he can pass it decently and has a decent matchup this week. Hard to sit him if he’s healthy enough to play.

Sky, kudos for the DEF advice last week with starting CIN v Green Bay. Literally got me through a tough matchup.

Now I’d like to pick your brain on your love for Givens where I don’t fully understand your higher rank. I can see running against the Niners, but the pass with how bad Bradford has been of late? Will they be taking more deep shots? Make me a believer!

    Thanks!

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

One bad game out of three in which he was sacked 6 times because the o-line was a sieve is ‘playing bad of late?’ That puts Tom Brady in do not start territory then if we go by those standards. He’s been one of the better fantasy QBs this year by the stats, no one on the Rams got it going last week. Have to factor in Smith and Willis’ absence for the 49s as well. Not to mention they have not been a very strong defensive squad so far.

      • Mikey says:
        (link)

@Sky: Recency bias I suppose Sky. Just read he leads the league in pass attempts, so volume by simple math creates targets too.

I’ll roll with him over Fleener and Michael Floyd in my TE/WR flex.

        • Sky

          Sky says:
          (link)

@Mikey: Yeah, problem with 1 bad week determining how to move forward is it’s just too hard to predict bad weeks like that. That Giants game was worse but no one would tell you to sit Cruz over someone else. They have been playing from behind a lot the last two weeks. Don’t know if I can say the same will happen tonight but I think we see a more involved Givens and hopefully less fumbles.

@Natural Born Champs: Because one’s the starter and named Trent Richardson?

      • Natural Born Champs says:
        (link)

@CramYourCatcherQuestionUpYourCramhole: Indianapolis Colts say Trent Richardson, Ahmad Bradshaw to split carries.
        Per Craig Kelley:

Pagano sez RB rotation will be same as at SF with AB and TR. They had 32-of-39 carries and had nearly 30/30-play split.

    • Sky

                  • Deck says:
                    (link)

@Sky: “Check the rankings.” Thats it. I hear that it is annoying to spend time on rankings and have people ask you to rank people right below it. It could be worse you could work 50+ hours then spend time making rankings and not have any one give a shit.

The reason I came here first was for baseball and I use this site almost entirely because of awesome prompt responses to specific questions, but if I start to feel like we are hassling you to ask these questions it takes away from the site.

If you just copy the phrase “check the rankings” and copy paste it enough times your message will be heard. That’s how Grey handles it over on baseball. Or better yet save the control+V and ignore straight rankings questions. You could write a note after the article that rankings questions will be ignored.

Once again love the site, like your input and I realize it is not my site. So take all or none of this, just wanted to let you know.

And you have to realize he’s said similar things. You just didn’t like the phrasing or are perhaps not realizing I’m not trying to be that way. That’s fine, your own personal stance. But really, Grey has said ‘I ranked them in my rankings’ numerous times and i use that all the time. To me, it sounds snide but its about efficiency when the topic has already been covered. Wasn’t trying to offend, just trying to respond without spending more time on it then needs be. Wish you luck moving forward, whichever football site you choose to use.

    Hi Sky,

I didn’t see Buffalo’s kicker, Dan Carpenter, on your Rankings list. He’s had 13 FP (standard) in weeks 2 & 3. What’s your thoughts on him in week 4? .

Lastly, I have both Dallas and San Fransisco DST’s (I play only 1). Should I drop San Fransisco to pick up Ryan Broyles?

    Thanks in Advance!

      Yes

  30. Clint (aka Pablo Death) says:
    (link)

Why’s everyone so down on Tampa’s D/ST? In my fantasy league, they’re ranked 10th overall, they’re tied with 3 other teams for 2nd in sacks, and they have a good pass defense outside of the New England game that I can see. This week they’re playing the statue with no offensive line and no running game at home and coming off a bad loss so they’ll probably come out firing with their new QB to energize them too.

    • CramYourCatcherQuestionUpYourCramhole says:
      (link)

@Clint (aka Pablo Death): I’d put them in the top 10 this week.

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

I’m not down on them and haven’t been overall. But the problem is, you can be a strong defensive unit and still get boned by your offensive unit due to bad field positioning. It’s like a game of tug of war you know the other side is good at playing but just doesn’t have the parts to win it. Like a dagger slowly getting pushed into your heart. Reminds me of when the Seahawks had Cortez Kennedy and a stout defense but something like Rick Mirer at QB. It was terrible. If Glennon shows he can at least move his offense enough that it’s not a one-sided affair, I’ll be happy with them moving forward. Had them and Cleveland as sleeper defenses coming into the season.

Like they had a field day vs the lowly Cleveland offense with the new QB last week? Their secondary is terrible and the one thing Pittsburgh has done decently this year is pass the ball. Don’t see where your stance comes from.

      • and1mcgee says:

Slim pickens at TE for me on the wire. I was thinking about Ertz in what should be Philly playing catch up the whole game. Maybe a lucky TD. But what’s with this Housler guy? Not much of a track record of production. You know a little something about him?

    • Sky

He’s a good receiving TE. Could be an outlet for Palmer for his .007 second drop back. In a PPR, I’d roll Housler. Just feels like the passing game in Philly is VJax and then…………………….everyone else.

You’re not ignorant! Jets have given up the 6th least amount of rushing yards on the year and let’s just say that TEN wanting to run the ball to hide Locker’s ineptitude isn’t exactly a hidden fact. See him struggling against them and Jets stacking the box to force Tennessee to win through the air.

Olsen was dropped (owner accidentally traded for 2 TEs in two different trades). Fleener and Clay represent the bottom of the owned TE barrel in my 12 team PPR and Miller is the best free agent. I believe somebody with roster space should be tempted to upgrade by dumping driftwood (a lower TE or WR4/5).
Would you put in a claim Olsen and take the zero (can’t roster 2 TEs….on the verge of having to take a zero at WR) or do you let him go and keep up the stream/scramble at the spot?

Hard to say at this stage. We’ll see on Sunday against a very solid AZ squad what this team looks like. I moved VJax and Mike Williams down in WR ranks but it didn’t take. VJax as a low end WR2 and WIlliams in WR4 territory for me this week.

      • Don’t forget V-Jax has a rib injury. Heard he’s being fitted for a jacket.

What should I do with Ridley this week. My first thought is that he should ride pine but on second hand this may be the week he turns things around ? I have K. Dropkins , Stephen Hill, emanuel Sanders or Pierre Thomas or Chris Givens I could enter in for Ridley. What would you suggest ?

    Thanks

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

Can give Ridley a go if we’re talking flex. Think he provides the best upside of those suggested outside of Sanders.

  47. Tim says:

Debating a trade… Haven’t given up on kaepernick, but I have been offered matty ice and Cecil shorts (or miles Austin or givens) for kaepernick and Stevie Johnson… I might try to get David Wilson instead of the receivers. What do you think?

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

I’d take it if Wilson is involved, not so much for another WR.

  48. I’d pounce on that with Austin. Matty has better toys than Kaep, so his floor is definitely higher. Kaep could have monster weeks with his running ability, but Matty will be more steady. Think point-totals like this for any 5-week span:

    Matty: 19, 23, 22, 18, 26
    Kaep: 9, 33, 27, 11, 14

I’d go Austin. It’s a run-first offense, but Romo is capable, and no teams aren’t doubling Dez every week.

  58. Dingbat says:
    (link)

I dropped my kicker to pick up Broyles this week, but I’m not starting him. Plus, I’m facing a crunch next week with Brown, Sanders, and Le’Veon Bell on bye. The league is 12-team PPR with 2RB, 2WR, TE, RB/WR, and WR/TE.

Who do I drop to grab a kicker this week?

    1) Broyles (would be 2nd WR next week if I kept him)
    2) Jared Cook (3rd TE behind Graham and Cameron)
    3) Sanders
    4) Le’Veon Bell
    5) Daryl Richardson
    6) Percy Harvin (playoff stash and potential keeper)
    7) None of the above

I could also probably trade Cook for Givens, which would make it easier to drop Broyles.

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

You should be making a trade from your TE depth and definitely wouldn’t drop any. If it’s a keeper, holding Harvin makes sense. I think it has to be Broyles there, don’t know if I trust him to produce enough this year to be held onto. Maybe try a two for one before the week starts and throw him in as a sweetener?

      • Dingbat says:
        (link)

@CramYourCatcherQuestionUpYourCramhole: @Sky: I got ya. I was just worried about Rodgers getting 18 rush attempts versus Snellings 11, and ATL seeming go to Rodgers more as the game went along (he had 9 touches in the 2nd half vs. Snellings 5 – if I can count right looking at the play-by-play)

I made some adjustments based on news and some of it isn’t showing. I’m probably going to go pull the code again. I moved Williams down closer to 40 and VJax closer to 20. If he does play, I like him over Broyles. I don’t trust that storyline right now.

nice, you got the PPR machine back up running. It makes quite a difference since i have the
m.williams/givens/streater/dola/crabtree combo and in trying to decide which are the best 2 PPR vs not makes quite a difference. this league is non-PPR. so williams/givens it is.
    1. at flex i’m guessing the 3 in a row on RB list wilson/bolden/d-rich are higher than streater for flex? So out of those 4 Wilson wins.

    • Sky

Mike Williams/VJax rankings might still be mucky; I had him closer to 40 but I think it’s still showing up closer to 20 (which is closer to where I have VJax now). I updated but the code must need a refresh. Yea, I’lll gamble on Wilson there.

That’s a hefty package. I’d expect a low end RB1 or a Cobb/Cruz type WR1 in return. Really hard to say, it’s more so about how the other guy values them but the stats say you’re giving up plenty right now.

@RJ: I’m not huge on Foster but that’s a question of what does he look like on your team. Does he become your RB1? If he’s your RB2 in that scenario and you don’t need Gordon, I like it.

  73. goodfold2 says:

different non-PPR. both you guys and espn guys have broyles a LOT lower than I would’ve thought. But they, in what seems stupid to me, have moore/streater ridiculously low. anyhoo which of these at flex
mathews/snelling/nicks. already have dez/hilton at other 2 WR slots and martin/GOB at RB slots.
also got kinda lucky in this league as even though knowledge of pryor playing or not might not come out till midday sun, even if he doesn’t tannehill plays mon. Newton bye wee fill in need.

Thanks for all of your advice! It’s really helping me get my bearings for my first football season (been doing baseball for a while).

I’m still having trouble figuring out player values. I just got an offer of Ridley and Stevie Johnson for my MJD. Stevie was ranked highly pre-season, but has fallen as of late. He’s got Cobb as well. Should I counter with Cobb + Ridley for MJD? My main issue is figuring out how to trade a RB for a WR in terms of valuation. Only tweak with standard scoring in our leage is .5 PPR.

    Thanks!

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

No prob, glad we could help. MJD is a buy low candidate. I wouldn’t be selling him for that package unless I were really needing a WR. Just not a Ridley fan.

  75. mike says:
    (link)

What are your thoughts on Lamar Miller long-term for dynasty’s… will he ever be a top 10 RB for fantasy purposes?

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

I think he can be. Right now, the Dolphins aren’t committing to him enough in the run game to make it happen, though. The GM wants to be right about Daniel Thomas. Hopefully that changes over the cousre of the season (because he’s not).

  76. Frank White says:
    (link)

Hey Sky… Remember yesterday you told me if I wanted to trade for a good receiver I would have to lose a bit in another area. You told me if I lose MJD in a trade then I would only have Doug M and Errington left and I couldn’t ride the season with Errington. Well I wanted to remind you that I have Sproles too. So do you think I should trade Sproles out for a good receiver?? That would leave me with Doug M, MJD, bench- Daryl R, Pierre Thomas & Errington

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

If you have Sproles, you can move MJD. MJD has the higher upside but Sproles is the more consistent. Better RB2 in that circumstance.

14-team non-PPR with special scoring for TE (1/10 RecYD for TE, 1/15 for WR/RB, 1/25 RushYD for RB). Fleener, Hartline, Bradshaw, Joique Bell. I need to start 2 of them this week. Thoughts on their ranking?

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

Fleener/Hartline. 25 yards for a point of rushing is atrocious, BTW. Your commish should be flogged for making some of the toughest yards to gain the worst in terms of points.

      • Pete says:
        (link)

@Sky: Ha! We tweak the scoring system every couple of years, and it might be time for another mod. The original intent was to even the field a bit between RB/WR/TE because in a 14-team league, the player pool gets ridiculously shallow if RB are far and away the dominant position. It makes our draft pretty wide open. But with the NFL becoming so much of a passing league, RBs overall have dropped off without our mods.

        • Sky

          Sky says:
          (link)

Yeah, that makes sense. Definitely needs a tweak towards lowering the boom on receivers at this point if that’s the intent. Tell’um Sky toldja so!

I’m still not sure I was clear. I would be getting Stafford (or Vick) and DMC.

You think Cameron’s value will stay up?

What’s up, 12 team .5ppr. Spiller got hurt in the 3rd qtr. someone offered me Dez Bryant for djax and fjax. Should I accept ASAP, wait to hear more news on spillers condition? Wait to trade him to spillers owner if he’s hurt? Thanks for you advice

Dez is a beast but I don’t think it’s a necessary trade. DJax/FJax performing well, hard to give that up.
