You know fantasy football season is right around the corner when the NFL Draft passes us by, but it really hits you when you start doing mock drafts. For many, doing mocks in May is a tad bit early, but I am one of the millions of fantasy owners who have embarked on this journey – whether I like it or not! Fantasy football is becoming increasingly more popular – not to say it wasn’t a juggernaut already – but there are people playing it all around the globe and from all walks of life.  While people used to draft a team or two a week or so before Opening Kickoff, you now have guys (and girls) with multiple teams (we’re talking dozens here), and they’re drafting all year round.  Dynasty league gurus have affectionately coined the term: “In dynasty leagues, there is no offseason”.  Such is the ADD/OCD culture we live in today. I wasn’t planning on doing a mock so early, but I was invited by the esteemed website, Lindy’s Sports, to participate in a mock draft that would later be featured in their magazine's 2014 Fantasy Football Preview Edition.  When glancing at some of the names on draft order list, I was sure that this would be a challenge.  Amongst my mock-mates were writers from some of the biggest fantasy football sites and publications out there.  This was gonna be interesting. The following is a recap of what went down for me on that warm, Southern California night.  The settings for the mock are as follows: 14 teams, 14 roster spots (3 WR/2 RB/FLEX format), non-PPR, standard scoring settings.  I had the 14th pick.
Yes, the draft happened during the weekend, and you can check out my round one thoughts here. I think it still has a few years left, if I'm counting in Roger Goodell units. But as you all know, the deeper the draft goes, the less fantasy-relevant it gets. (Don't worry though, we'll cover the draft more this week.) And while that probably isn't why Josh Gordon decided to net himself a possible season-long suspension for smoking some green to grab back the fantasy headlines, what this lede presupposes is, maybe it is?
Highs and lows. Yup, that about sums it up. Both the running backs from 2013 and how I view my medicine cabinet in the bathroom. Today I'm typing on trilacridopaprylocine. The current effect is everything I'm typing looks like its in Wing Dings. I'll keep you up to date on how the rest goes...but let's get back to the first part of this. It wasn't just my top 10 that got blown up by injury, ineptitude or both. There were plenty of assets that made their owners go mad given their price this year and I can promise you the result from this year is going to make me take a hard look at how I evaluate RB rankings in 2014. As the NFL slowly moves onto being a passing league moreso than a running league, having a lead back - or at least the original definition of it for fantasy - looks like its becoming a dying breed. Truthfully, there was very little value in drafting an RB high this year when we compare the peaks and the valleys and how much gold came much later in the draft. You've heard of the scrub QB theory, we might be well on our way to working one up for RBs in 2014. But of course that's a topic for another time. For now, instead of looking forward let's look at our behinds. Here's the Top 20 Running Backs from the 2013 Fantasy Football season...
I hate to talk ill of you on the last read of the season, I really do. I only dole out tough love when tough love is due but I think this situation is ripe for it. You shouldn't really care about what I'm typing right now. Ok, ok, ok, I'm alright if you care because your championship is two weeks long. Not perfect but it is reasonable. But really, even in a week 17 in which games actually mattered, the fantasy football season should not be judged by the scoring leader board we got this week. Sure, LeGarrette Blount has slowly worked is way into the cockles of Belichick's heart over the course of the season. Really let's face facts, though; Bill's been looking for a BenJarvus Green-Ellis impersonator since day one. Congrats, Billy boy, looks like you found your man. Blount finished with 189 rushing yards and 2 TDs on the day and 334 all purpose yards to set a Patriots franchise record and the 11th most in NFL history. That's a pretty wild day and great if you had it on your team...but really? Did you come into 2013 saying 'I can't wait to sit Jamaal Charles and start Blount'? Even in a week where there were so many important games on Sunday, it was still an odd fantasy day overall as we'll cover a bit...and by that I mean drill bit. I'm gonna drive this point home people! But for serious, I'm happy for you and Ima let you finish but week 16 championships are the great of all time...OF ALL TIME! Ok, I'm done lambasting you...for now. Here's what else I saw from the final week of the season for 2013 Fantasy Football...
I guess this question is really a two parter because there's a yang to this yin. But to be honest, it's Monday after week 16 has almost concluded. Losers need not apply. *Hears readership heading for exits*. Wait, wait, wait, did I say losers? I meant Lugers! Yeah, that's it! You know, people who luge? Yeah, get the eff out, winter Olympic sports people! And take that Jamaican bobsled team with ya! Now where was I before I was rudely interrupted by a buncha sore Lugers...oh yeah, we were talking Fantasy Football, of course. The kind of Fantasy Football that wins championships, i.e. the bestest kind. For all the talk of JC Superstar and Knowshon this year, it's kinda been lost in the shuffle that LeSean McCoy has been beasting all year. Ok, it's hard to say that about @CutOnDime25 but when you think about it, it's kinda true. Everyone talked about how he could be a fantasy stud in the off-season when Chip came to town but really, everyone was talking about Chip not him. Then Vick started the year off hot, so Michael Vick was the point of discussion. Then Vick sucked and that, of course, was the point of discussion. Then in waltzed Nick Foles who started running Chip's offense at full steam and then he was the point of discussion. It's odd that a guy can lead the NFL in rushing yards and be a bit of an afterthought in this game we play but that's what happens when you're consistently good but rarely breakout great in this game. Everyone wants week 15 JC Superstar, week 8 Megatron, week 13 Josh Gordon (will someone PLEASE give that man a nickname). But Shady has just 'been there'. He's had some big rushing days, don't get me wrong as his 133 yards on the ground Sunday were his 6th 100+ yard effort of the year and he does have a 200+ yard snow game to his credit. I don't know, maybe I'm Chris Collinsworth'ing this whole shizz and creating a narrative that doesn't need to be made but I swear I've heard more about other players of this caliber over the course of the season than LeSean. Here's to you, Shady, and the joy of the championships you brought to all those peoples out there who aren't Lugers. In other news from week 16 of the 2013 Fantasy Football season...
I know what you're thinking... The last week?  The last LSD of the season?  But unfortunately, it is the last of the Last Second Decisions, as I am officially retiring from fantasy football after this season.  It's been an absolutely incredible ride the past three years fielding the last minute questions, three years of Last Second Decisions, helping out with Team Previews, RCLs, a couple Daily Recaps, everything that makes Razzball be Razzball.  Good news is Sky is gonna keep Razzball Football the best in the biz heading into next year, while I focus everything on Razzball Basketball to bring you the hoops hardware.  Or the hoops scissors.  As in cutting down the net.  Don't run with them!  Again, it couldn't have been a happier ride, and if you have any Fantasy NBA teams, be sure to keep up with us on basketball through the rest of the NBA season!
In most leagues this is championship week. It also means 80 percent or more of players are done for the season. For those who still remain, let’s take a look at the key injuries that can make or break your title dreams. Adrian Peterson (foot, groin) was limited in practice the last couple days as was Toby Gerhart (hamstring) and Matt Asiata didn’t practice either so the Vikings’ running back situation looks like a big mess heading into this week against Cincinnati. Today should provide clarity as to who will do the running against the fifth-best rush defense in the league. If Peterson’s available, you play him. Gerhart is more of desperation play and Asiata looks like someone to avoid all together. While Asiata scored three times last week, keep in mind his low yardage totals. Asiata should only be used in TD-only formats if both AP and Gerhart are out.
Oh how injuries make a man cry, no not the hurt guy, this guy....ME! I'm a Bronco fan, been one since Elway was still at Stanford. My uncle has been a season ticket holder since the team was born in 1960 and my dad went to their first game ever, an exhibition over summer vacation as a teenager. I cry because Montee Ball scares the crap out of me. He could finish the day with 90 yards, 2 TD's and 3 fumbles....OK, I'm over reacting. He only has three fumbles on the season and the first two were in September, but as they say, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression" He's been getting some playing time lately so we have a baseline to go with. Over the last 4 games he's averaged 4 YPC, scored 3 TD's on the ground and caught 6 balls. Dive deeper into that, he had two of those scores vs. the Chiefs in week 11 and we can reasonably expect 1TD and at least 65 yards and 4 catches against them this week. If Moreno is out, Ball's a flex play in my book, if your league doesn't have a flex spot then I suggest going on to your league message board and direct your commissioners over here so we can set them straight. We here at Razzball have no problem spreading the good word for proper format. Last week our resident freestyler never showed up for his return performance. Egotistical rappers! I forgot to put out his bowl of green M&M's and 6 blunts in the green room. I'm sensing a theme with him. Get out of your camper down by the river and show up Prezzi. I hope everyone had a memorable Thanksgiving, good or bad, Please share your stories of heavy drinking, fights, delicious food and any small fires or ER trips.
This might be old news or you might have been on a staycation and turned off all your electronic devices for the last week, but damn, why did the Colts trade for T-Rich? Donald Brown looked really good last week and being that he is averaging 5.9 YPC to T-Rich's 2.8 you would think he would be the starter and the trade bust would be the waterboy. Oh wait a minute, wrong boy, not the waterboy, the piss boy. I know what you are all thinking, why talk about a guy that is the obvious add when we all know better than to play T-Rich? Because we here at razzball like to beat a dead horse till it's all glue and dog food....and we still get lots of should I play T-Rich questions. Drop his ass like your internet date dropped you when she went to "the bathroom" and never came back. Last week and part of this week it was all raining Rainey up in here after that suspenseful build up and amazing delivery by the guy who got CUT by the Browns back in October. The Browns should've had Donald Brown thrown into the deal. Could you imagine the merch sales of the Brown Browns jersey? The season is winding down, playoffs are a few hangovers away and Sky is starting to lose it. We need to stay sharp and start going with our best players, study our schedules weeks ahead, and maybe grab some handcuffs in case a stud gets shut down, injured or demoted. I'm not saying to go grab Gerhart in case AP gets hurt but I would stash Bryce Brown, Robert Turbin, Christian Michael, Montee Ball, Dennis Johnson, Bernard Pierce, and Kendall Hunter....oh what the hell, grab Gerhart if you're really feeling an AP injury is coming. Before you all go WTF J-FOH, I'm not saying to drop someone usable, but if you have 6 WR's and you are only going to play 3 or 4 of them, and the 6th guy won't hurt you on someone else's team then yeah go grab a stash. Rid yourself of your back up kickers and 3rd team defense. You want to be ahead of the game and think about situations that may occur in the last 2 weeks of the season. Most especially if your championship week is the last week of the season. By the way, I think that is the dumbest thing ever and damn all commishes that make the championship week the last week of the year. I can hear it now, " Hey, I have Peyton, and he's only playing a couple series this week and I need to start either EJ Manuel or Geno Smith for my championship matchup" I don't want to see that and will only answer questions like that with really stupid questions. Be smart FFB's and start stashing good upside guys that MIGHT get some PT. This also goes for WR's. Lastly, I was really disappointed we had zero hecklers for Prezzi's freestyles in football bash last weekend. I invite him back again to lay it down like an underground MC in an abandoned warehouse.
Why did I pick up Bobby Rainey, the guy who was waived by the Cleveland Browns back in October? This move makes me feel dirty, not pigpen dirty, but the I just picked up a hooker in an alley dirty. Maybe I should go back to the beginning. *wavy lines wavy lines wavy lines* I drafted Doug Martin in the hopes he would lead me to championship glory. He's PPR gold and that's all I play, standard makes me fall asleep from boredom. But nope, that was an unwise selection. Hey I listened to Sky and I was so pissed at him that I hopped on a little plane, flew to where he lives, got drunk and told him off. What can I say, I really think my insults are better in person. OK, now I grab Mike James who drops 158 on the Seahawks and makes me think that maybe I scored some pure lottery type luck. Nope, that's strike two on your hopes and dreams. Now what do I do, Tampa is cursed, they lost their QB who woke up one day and said "I suck", a bunch of them got MRSA, their coach is a dick, and now Brian Leonard is the lead back. Wait!....What? Bobby Rainey looked so good on Monday night, "well Jack he was playing the weak rush D of the Dolphins", that is true diligent commenter. But Really? I know what I'll do, I'll grab both and beat the devil at his own game. Damn, this shizz is making me depressed. Rainey has the upside here. If you don't already own him I would grab him. Bucs are showing signs of life and I think every current and former Browns running back is better than T-Rich. Yup, I would drop T-Rich for Rainey. If you're going to go for it then I would go grab Rainey and hopefully the curse of the Bucs is over and they all play really well ROS.
Both Calvin Johnson and A.J. Green are in tough matchups this week, but you’re going to play them anyway. Why? They’re just too talented to bench. Baltimore is incredibly good at protecting against the run, but that won’t stop you from starting Matt Forte will it? Probably not. There are just some players you have to start regardless of their matchup, but that list is pretty short, so here are some players that aren’t on that list. Steven Jackson has so much potential! After a decent performance in New Orleans week 1, Jackson has been a huge disappointment ever since, thanks to his injury. There are better scenarios ahead, but against a surprisingly decent Tampa Bay run defense, you shouldn’t expect much from him this week. Consider him a low end flex play until next week…when the Saints come marching in.
Ohhhhhh man.  Another week and another 6 teams on bye.  That makes 20% of players gone. So it's kinda like Tehol's weekly Writer's League lineup. Luckily my one really bad team was the only one hit with terrible byes last week, but this week... Man... Lots of tough cookies.  Guru is already talking smack because my 8-0 boys have James Starks at RB Eddie Royal in there in my flex.  Spoiler alert!  Neither are recommendations below.  Slim Pickens on the wire.  Plus ally of the JB world Justin Blackmon went on a Jessie Pinkman bender.  It's all coming to an end.  But I must maintain the faith, visualize a redonkulous upset, and hope my path to perfection stays true.
