Last December when I released my top 25 and top 50 dynasty rankings for 2020, there were three rankings for which I was mocked most: Kerryon Johnson (way too high at #18, they scoffed), Joe Mixon (way too low at #26, they cried) and Juju Smith-Schuster (way too low at #50, they howled). Two for three would make me the best baseball player in the history of baseball, but in the game of fantasy football dynasty rankings it won’t fly. Also, I missed terribly on a bunch of other rankings including Fournette, OBJ and Hollywood. So now I must be held accountable and take responsibility for ranking my cousin Kerryon Johnson way, way, way too high last year. No excuses! No blame! Even though the freshly-fired-incompetent-coach/GM-duo of Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn seem like pretty good scapegoats—was it really necessary to spend an early 2nd round pick on D’Andre Swift AND sign Adrian Peterson AND not use your talented 23 year old RB Kerryon Johnson at all? Ah right, no excuses. But the sun was in my eyes last year when I was writing my rankings. So this year I brought in a ringer to keep me in check: Pat Fitzmaurice. Pat is currently sitting at #1 (out of 160 experts) in this year’s FantasyPros’ Ranking Accuracy Competition, he also finished #2 (out of 162 experts) in FP’s Draft Ranking Accuracy Competition in 2019 and he holds the title of #1 most accurate draft ranker from 2017-2019. In short, the man is a fantasy football ranking sorcerer and he was kind enough to record a YouTube show with me discussing each of our top 10s—subscribe and give us a like if you don’t hate it.  Anyway, here’s that show, followed by my top 10 dynasty rankings for 2021 fantasy football:

*note: these rankings are geared toward half PPR full fledged dynasty leagues

Rank. Player | Position | Age on 9/1/2021 | Free Agency Year

1. D.K. Metcalf | WR | 23 | 2023

2. Christian McCaffrey | RB | 25 | 2024

Is ranking D.K. Metcalf #1 overall controversial? I have no idea, I live in a padded room and they don’t allow me to make contact with the outer world other than to write questionable fantasy advice. What I do know is I haven’t seen a receiver this naturally gifted since Megatron, and Metcalf is barely of legal drinking age. We’re looking at 7-10 years of elite WR1 production. What more do you want from your dynasty centerpiece?

The trickiest part about overall rankings is having to weigh one position versus another, it’s like comparing apples to kumquats. Then we add in the dynasty wrinkle which means we have to consider player age and our respective team’s contention window. Wide receivers and quarterbacks provide gold standards for durability and longevity, while running back valuations are wildly volatile like the pile of PutinCoin I bought. But if we wanna get rich and win our fantasy championships then we’ll need some crypto in the portfolio. Enter Christian McCaffrey. 2020 has been a frustrating season to own CMC with him already missing nine games with ankle and shoulder injuries. But he hadn’t missed a game during the first three seasons of his career, and when he’s been on the field McCaffrey has still racked up huge fantasy numbers. There’s no player I’d rather own if I was all-in for 2021.

3. Tyreek Hill | WR | 27 | 2023

4. A.J. Brown | WR | 24 | 2023

5. Dalvin Cook | RB | 26 | 2026

6. Davante Adams | WR | 28 | 2022

7. DeAndre Hopkins | WR | 29 | 2025

I did a lot of hemming and hee-hawing with this tier because it’s a pretty fluid group in my mind. The only thing that can hold Tyreek Hill back is if the Chiefs don’t re-sign him after the 2022 season (I do expect they extend him). That, or off the field issues. People get sensitive when I bring up the whole child abuse allegations and the domestic battery conviction in college, but his temperament always lingers in the back of my mind. Regardless, Mahomie has been looking Reek’s way even more than usual this season which might be a preview of what we can expect if and when Travis Kelce is out of the picture.

At one point I had Hill and A.J. Brown in their own mini-tier, but chickened out. Brown isn’t quite the physical freak that Metcalf is, but it’s not really fair to compare any human to D.K. Ryan Tannehill has now strung together nearly two full seasons of exceptional quarterback play, and he’s under contract in Tennessee through 2023. At the spry age of only 24, I see no reason to bump the budding superstar any lower than the 3-7 range as we head into 2021. Brown’s a blue chip asset worth building around.

Does Dalvin Cook‘s ridiculous production justify bumping him into the top tier? Maybe so, but the guy is also as fragile as my ego, missing at least a couple games every season of his four year career. Still, it’s difficult to contend in top heavy dynasty leagues without elite RBs and Dalvin is as elite of a runner as they come. Plus, he’s now locked down by the Vikings through 2025 and they aren’t shy about piling on the carries.

The question surrounding Davante Adams dynasty value entering 2020 was Aaron Rodgers’ future in Green Bay. With the Packers ponying up a first rounder for Jordan Love over the summer, the writing was on wall in Wisconsin Cheddar Cheez Whiz. But with Rodgers now discount double checking his way to a career year at age 37, someone may have to clean up all that Cheez Whiz. I have a hard time seeing Green Bay opting out of their QB’s contract after 2021 if he looks anything like this next year, and that’s fantastic news for Adams’ dynasty outlook.

DeAndre Hopkins is the old man of my top 10 at the crusty age of 29 entering the 2021 season. It’s far from a given with the elite receivers typically starting to fade anywhere from age 31 to 35, but my gut tells me we get five more elite seasons from Nuk. He has the benefit of a young QB in Kyler Murray, who throws a beautiful deep ball and keeps defenses on their heals with his legs.

8. Saquon Barkley | RB | 24 | 2023

9. Alvin Kamara | RB | 26 | 2026

10. Jonathan Taylor | RB | 22 | 2024

I hemmed and hee-hawed on the previous tier, but this is really where I started flip-flopping like Dan Marino out of water. That doesn’t make sense because dolphins are mammals, but only about 10% of what I write makes sense anyway. Point is, there’s some real question marks with these three running backs.

Saquon Barkley is coming off a torn ACL and he’s rotting away on a lost Giants team, but when healthy he’s the most physically gifted back in the league. Alvin Kamara was extended by the Saints and he’s special in the passing game, but we’ve already seen the negative effects of a Taysom Hill led offense. Is Taysom really the future play caller in New Orleans or will Sean Payton make other plans?

Jonathan Taylor is a patient runner (#12 in the league in average time behind the line of scrimmage) with freakish speed (4.39 forty) and one of the best offensive lines in the league. The questions on Taylor coming into the 2020 draft were his hands in the pass game and ball security after some fumbling issues at Wisconsin. JT answered those questions by catching 35 of 37 targets with no drops this year while fumbling only once in 184 rushing attempts. I’m all in on the kid from Home Improvement. Looking at a couple longer term assets who I strongly considered for the back end of the top 10, Nick Chubb, Micheal Thomas, Justin Jefferson and CeeDee Lamb all just missed the cut. You’ll have to check back in for the top 20 to see exactly how I ranked those dudes and more! Make sure you check out the video above for more context and insight regarding my ranking process and philosophy.

Clinched a playoff spot. I need to cut bait with a bench WR for roster space.
Tyler Boyd:
w14 – Dallas
w15 – Pit
w16 – Houston

Jalen Reagor:
w14: NO
w15: Arz
w16: Dallas

Probably Boyd right? He’s pretty useless with the QB options.

Yeah, I’m not planning on starting either one down the stretch. Just in case of injury. But I figure Reagor has a higher risk/reward potential in case I need a dart throw. Cheers.

If gaskin is cleared would you start him this week at flex? I have Godwin off, which 2 wr would you go with if gaskin isn’t cleared. Need 1 for wr and 1 for flex. Mims, lamb, watkins. Gaksins has practiced for 2 weeks now, but miami has said nothing about his availability. Thx

12 team non ppr keep 3 league

Ran into buzzsaw Henry/Tyreek last week…probably won’t overcome 58 point deficit I need to advance. Looking to get some draft capital back or improve keepers. Are any of question 2’s values too low?

1) Trade my Davante/Mixon for Metcalf

2) Davante for 1st rounder/5th
Zeke for 1st rounder
Swift or Jefferson for early 2nd
Ceedee Lamb for 3rd
Mixon for 4th rounder

Can keep forever. My one keeper who I’m not considering trading is CMC. I really like Jefferson, Lamb and Swift. I would hate to lose them for nothing.

Thanks for your earlier advice on my starters. I put Booker in the mix cuz I have a claim on him tonight and I have the #1 position. My opponent has the #9 position so it is likely he won’t get him. So now I am having second thoughts. Should I burn my WW #1 status for Booker or is he a one week guy and I should hold off? If I pass on Booker, I would play Cook, Gallman and Monty. If I grab him, I would play him for Gallman. Decisions, decisions.!

Nice! I have to win. Win equals a bye week. Lose and I finish third and face a rejuvenated, bad luck 6th place team with Mahomes and Henry.

Love the thread Donkey! Id love to pick your brain about my keepers. 10 team league, 4 keepers, full PPR, 3 WR slots and 1 flex. Keep a player for 2 years they go down a pick, etc.

For sure pick: Mahomes (Rd 10) – Definitely keeping Mahomes, drafted him late his rookie year.

Possible remaining 3 picks:

Tyreek Hill (Rd 1) –  The Mahomes/Hill stack is insane but I’m a little hesitant to spend a 1st rounder on him when I’m in need of an elite RB.

AJ Brown (Rd 4) – Brown’s ADP should be in 2nd or 3rd round next year, his talent level is insane and I can see him becoming one of the top WRs next year.

Diontae Johnson (Rd 11) – DJ in round 11 could be insane, he’s getting 10+ targets a game recently and his play making ability is crazy.

Chris Godwin (Rd 14) – I picked up Godwin on waivers a few years back and he’s definitely my strongest pick when it comes to ADP differential.

Kenyan Drake (Rd 5) – Decent ADP,  talent is undeniable but he’s just not that exciting at the moment.

It’s not a bad problem to have choosing between these guys, I’m just struggling with it! Who are you keeping on your squad?

Thanks dude.

I’m the only 10-2 team at the moment and it’s looking like I’ve got a good shot for the championship, so I’d probably be very late pick if not last. Might need to take Tyreek 1st then and go with my gut on DJ vs Godwin. Thanks for the help and good luck in playoffs!

Update: The league taco dropped Miles Gaskin and I just swooped him up off waivers. He would be a 17th round pick next year if I kept him, think that changes anything here?

what do you mean “people get sensitive” like child abusers/domestic abusers show up en masse to defend this activity or something? (mind ya business) or is it something like “hey if he’s not in prison it’s all good and just rank to skills” kinda deal (look the other way)? i’m sure it’s more diluted than these. maybe those are numbed from the large number of truly nasty things no small amount our modern version of gladiators (professional athletes) simply do, a lot, outside of the sporting arenas.

– how in the living shit is josh gordon not even 30 yet (and his “crimes” obv are only doing drugs, and not performance enhancing ones); amazing how fast time flies to the onlookers when yr suspended that large amount of your career (i’m sure to HIM it didn’t go by quickly, no matter how much pills/weed/booze he’s imbibed)

ummm, there’s a tape that’s well known of him threatening to kill both the mother of at least one of his kids and the kid; and not just a one sentence “bitch i’m gonna kill you” either it was MUCH more scary sounding than that (and the earlier offense (at least one) was quite well proven). people saying t.hill doesn’t beat at least women (not including the kids) is like saying the mob doesn’t kill people since the witnesses either disappear, die or change their story out of fear. not saying k.hunt hits every female he sees, but we do know at least 3 times in the span of like 8 months he’d find women that he’d take to party at a casino/club then they’d get prone to get hit by him somewhere in there. these were on camera too.

i think the mixon defenders are in the rare possibly believable “he did it one time” camp (of course CEH also only did his thing once (except he killed a guy, with an accomplice, which just happened to not be investigated at all as his dad is on that police force)). mixon’s wasn’t domestic, some woman in a restaurant he was hanging out at attacked him, he hit her (unconscious since he’s so much stronger than her) once. he may or may not have known the woman much (if at all) before that encounter and the whole thing can be seen in video. he didn’t appear to search out the woman, or invite her to any private place, the whole thing was in public. the domestic stuff is far far worse, since it’s entirely possible it just goes on hundreds of times for years.

yeah, but they’re gradations of this all bad stuff. if a guy say beats his kids and woman for years on the reg vs a dude who gets off banging randos then fairly often gets in fights with them when they refuse to leave the hotel room but does it 10ish times or something. same as a guy who killed some people once in a botched robbery vs multiple dozen murders serial killer.

Grabbed Booker using my #1 claim position which gave me heartburn. But may be more about keeping him off other teams. So here is my team in 12 teamer, standard scoring league. Who you starting this week?

1. RB: Cook, Monty for sure. 3rd back between Booker at Jets, Gallman at Hawks, Gore v Raiders, Gaskin v Bengals, or JTaylor v Texans. So many RBs. Gallman has been so consistent I am leaning there since I am in a high floor situation. So maybe I grabbed Booker for no reason lol.

2. So few WR with Galloday out and Julio questionable.
Julio, Boyd, Shepard…pick 2.

Thanks for all your advice. I take it at least half the time 😀….Therapeutic to write it all out.

yeah you need much more help/depth at WR if those 3 are your only healthy ones (and golladay is looking worse now than 2 weeks ago too), boyd needs to get benched for somebody there i’d hope (i’m only holding that dude in dynasties or 16+ leagues and even in 16+ if i was strong i’d bench)

booker is at least a great block and certainly playable this week. i’m adding richard (finally back it sounds like). so you have 5 starting RB’s, 4 of which should have their jobs indef going forward, but 2 playable WR’s. i’d def try to get one of perriman/hilton/coutee/lazard onto that roster for depth (and i’d start certainly the first 3 over boyd ROS right now). if you only start 2 WR this is doable i guess shepard/julio.

I agree. My situation is odd in that I am playing for the bye week as is my opponent. We are in 2nd and 3rd place respectively and he has the tie-breaker. He has R Jones out and no viable backup. So I grabbed all the RBs I could and even slotted Gaskin in my IR slot so I could carry 7 of them – one beyond the limit. All legal btw.
So I won’t have WR depth this week but likely will drop Gore while adding a WR for the playoffs. I am leaning Lazard given his QB vs McCoy and Allen ugh. Which WR would you add?

hilton when you have space. he could’ve had 5 TD’s over the last 3ish weeks (or it might be 2), i watched 2 games of IND’s he got pass inter’d numerous times in both games lately, still got one TD and the targets are back to at least decent.

Final roster spot for a WR. Won’t play him this week but in case of emergency in playoffs, who do you like the best?

T.Y……at Vegas, Hous, at Pitt
Perriman….at Hawks, at Rams, Browns
Beasley…Pitt, at Denver, at NE
Coutee….at Bears, at Indy, Bengals

This week….Perriman (Vegas), Lazard (Eagles) or T.Y. (At Hous)

anybody else forseeing a rise in people searching want ads for big game hunters that specialize in ivory this week? walrus’
– thinking he’s gaining some sort of edge having CEH be a fake active (i don’t own CEH anywhere, but that’s sick what he’s doing to them)
– t.hill’s TD there early in 2nd quarter, that ball never touched the ground, no challenge? hmm, might want to watch when your team scores TD’s ya think.

why would a coach need a player to tell him to watch the replay on a possible score? isn’t it exactly a coach’s job to:
1. be doing that himself
2. if he doesn’t have time one of the other numerous coaches or assistants to do stuff like this

t.hill is the ONLY one who had no reason to know if the ball had or had not touched the ground; so walrus bitching at him afterward doesn’t make any sense. somehow EVERY other KC entity didn’t notice this. it WAS immediately obv when watching the replay too. people need to remember this one when the next announcer or commentator mentions the “genius” of walrus, cause this was a str up LAC/gase level coach failure.

12 team non-PPR league. Get to keep 8 keepers for 2021.

QB – Goff
RBS. – CMC, Dalvin Cook, Chubb, Drake, Ekeler, D Swift, JK Dobbins, David Johnson
WRS – Thielen, Fuller, Deebo Samuel
TE – Goedert

Who do I keep. I like all RBs and Thielen and Fuller. I’m thinking dropping Goff, David Johnson, Fuller, Samuel and Goedert. Would keep Fuller, but he’s hard to trust with his suspension and history of injury. Need to get one more elite receiver. Should I keep Fuller and drop another RB?
