Dynasty Considerations

The artistry and challenge of dynasty fantasy football is that there is no hard and fast, staunch philosophy we must adhere to. There are different ways to “build” teams, accumulate players and draft picks, or naturally trade them away. For full context in this dynasty series, we must pay specific attention to player contracts, age, coaching staff, team ecosystem, and offensive scheme. Quarterbacks are essentially gold in SuperFlex; you are in a massive predicament if you are without. This week, we’ll look at 2023 Dynasty Quarterbacks in Tier 4.

11. Dak Prescott

Dak only played 11 games due to a right thumb injury in September 2022. His stats for 2022 were respectable, posting 2860 yards, 23 passing TD, 66.2 completion percentage, but only 182 rushing yards and one rushing TD. As we see with most, the rushing attempts and yardage go down as the years go by. Dallas feels like a team that wants to win on their ground game and defense and not have to put every win on Prescott’s back. Dak is a low-end QB1, and I’m pretty stoked if he is my QB2 in super-flex formats. I am slightly concerned about the offense without Kellan Moore and likely Mike McCarthy calling plays.

Age: 30                     Contract: Four-year, 160 million, signed 2021

12. Kyler Murray

Kyler falls in my rankings here due to several factors:

  • His ACL injury and recovery
  • The Cardinal’s commitment to him
  • His commitment to playing football

Murray only played 11 games last year, and he was a little rocky in his starts. There was obvious tension between Murray and Kingsbury, Kingsbury’s offensive scheme, and culture overall. Murray’s body language said more than words needed multiple times last year. Arizona possesses two first-round picks in 2024, which could easily be very early positions. Murray is “on notice,” the Cards could tank, draft Caleb Williams, and trade Kyler in 2024. He is still an elite talent when he is healthy, and 12 is as low as I can rank him.

Age: 26                      Contract: Five-year, 230.5 million, signed 2022

13. Kirk Cousins

Cousins is perennially undervalued and disregarded. He offers little to nothing in the rushing game as he is a pure pocket passer, but he will get a couple of goal line sneak TDs. In year one with Kevin O’Connell, we saw the Vikings transition to more of a pass-first team, as many of us had hoped. Kirk’s pass attempts were up by 82 from the 2021 season and 127 from the 2020 season. He finished 2022 with 4547 yards, a 65.9 completion percentage, 97 rushing yards, two rushing TD, and 29 passing TD. Clearly, Jefferson is one of the best WR in the game; now, the Vikings draft Addison to be the WR2. There’s a lot to love about this passing attack, and Cousins still has a couple of great years to come.

Age: 34.9                     Contract: One-year extension, 35 million, signed 2022

14. C.J. Stroud

Stroud put on a clinic last year at Ohio State, concluding 2022 with 3688 yards, 66.3 completion percentage, 41 TD, 108 rushing yards, and only six interceptions. Stroud will be the starting QB, as he was selected second overall in the 2023 draft. He has the prototypical size, pinpoint accuracy, arm strength, and ability to get through his progressions well. He possesses rushing chops but appears hesitant about when and where he utilizes them. There are bound to be some bumps in the road in his rookie year, but Stroud will shine and maintain his dynasty value going into 2024.

Age: 21.8                     Contract: Rookie deal, signed 2023

15. Bryce Young

This year’s 1.01 selection to the Panthers was a massive trade-up for Carolina to get their “franchise QB.” In 12 games played, Young amassed 3328 yards, 32 TD, 185 rushing yards, and only five interceptions. Young’s size is a concern, as he’s listed at 5’ 10” 204 pounds. We all wonder if he can stand up to the physical abuse of an entire season. He’s done it for two years in the most pro-ready division in college football, so I believe he can. Bryce is a very cerebral player who improvises effectively, has excellent pocket presence, and can extend plays.

Age: 22                        Contract: Rookie deal, signed 2023

16. Daniel Jones

With the coaching and influence of Brian Daboll, we saw Jones have a career year in 2022. He did not post the most outrageous numbers but showed extensive improvement. Jones finished the 2022 season with 3205 yards, 15 TD, 708 rushing yards, and seven rushing TD. The statistic that is quietly most impressive is that he only lost three fumbles and threw five interceptions. The Giants added some receivers in free agency and drafted speedster Jalin Hyatt. I was in on Jones last year as a buy simply due to my confidence in Daboll’s coaching, and I stand by that again in 2023.

Age: 26.2                     Contract: Four-year, 160 million, signed 2023

17. Tua Tagovailoa

Tua is easily the most significant risk in the rankings here. We saw the scary concussions last year and know his career is over if he takes another traumatic brain injury. None of us want to see that, and frankly, I would rather see him hang it up early than suffer later in life. However, when he was on the field last year, he was stellar, running the Mike McDaniel offense. Tua supported two top 10 WRs in, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, finishing 2022 with 13 games played, 3548 yards, 25 passing TD, and 70 rushing yards. Let’s all hope Tua can stay healthy.

Age: 25.4 Contract: Rookie deal, UFA 2025, signed 2020
