2024 Fantasy Football Wide Receiver Breakouts

A “Breakout”, for me, is a player that has not recently finished in the Top 20 WR that could level up, that you may be able to draft at a discount.

  • Player: Joshua Palmer
  • Team: Los Angeles Chargers
  • Current ECR Rank (as of this writing): WR56

Rhetorical Question – Who does Justin Herbert have to throw to?  First name that I see coming off draft boards is Ladd McConkey and I am here for the selection.  The closer we get to the start of the season, the more I think we see McConkey creep up the board.  The name that does not seem to be quickly rising but might depending on when you draft is Joshua Palmer.  Take the draft day discount as you remember all the vacated targets with the departure of Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Austin Ekeler, and Gerald Everett.  HC Jim Harbaugh will probably run more than the previous regime, but this is the NFL, and he will quickly recognize Herbert will need to throw to keep the team competitive.  Palmer should be the recipient of a load of targets.  The one unknown is health.  We need Palmer to stay healthy to provide that breakout season we covet.

  • Player: Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown
  • Team: Kansas City Chiefs
  • Current ECR Rank (as of this writing): WR42

Two Words: Patrick Mahomes. What more do you need to hear for a WR ready for a breakout?  Brown has always felt like a borderline WR1, but always seemed to fall into the WR2-3 category.  That is a good thing for you heading into draft season. Couple that with his new running mate, Rashee Rice, being drafted ahead of him and you have the makings of a massive breakout season for Brown.  With rookie WR Xavier Worthy best suited for the slot position, Brown has proven to be able to stretch the defense and I will look to roster him everywhere.  The offense knows what it is doing.  HC Andy Reid is an offensive mastermind.  Oh, did I mention Patrick Mahomes?  Enough said.

Player: Romeo Doubs

  • Team: Green Bay Packers
  • Current ECR Rank (as of this writing): WR48

While Christian Watson has the highest draft pedigree and Jayden Reed seems to be the sweetheart of early 2024 draft and Dontayvion Wicks is being sought after as a nice sleeper, the WR with the best chance of a breakout for Green Bay (in my humble opinion) is Doubs.  You may not know this, but the WR that led the Packers in plays on the field and routes run from both the 2WR and 3 WR sets is Doubs.  Couple that with what I saw with my eyes when Jordan Love looked for Doubs down the stretch and in the playoffs in 2023 and I like Doubs for the best chance at a breakout for an ascending offense.

  • Player: Khalil Shakir
  • Team: Buffalo Bills
  • Current ECR Rank (as of this writing): WR70

Out with the old (Stefon Diggs, Gabe Davis) and in with the new (kind of), Khalil Shakir.  Shakir was heating up down the stretch in 2023 and I like him to pick up where he left off in 2024.  Shakir is primed for a breakout by being a PPR magnet in the slot while Curtis Samuel and Dalton Kincaid probably receive the top coverage.  Josh Allen is a much better QB than Sam Howell, so give me the guy catching passes from the probable QB1 in 2024.
