It’s Sunday Morning in New Orleans. 4:27 A.M. to be exact. A 35 year-old journey quarterback awakens with a groan on the couch in his hotel room. He prefers a bed most nights but this specific hotel has mattresses that are too stiff for his back.

He strokes his beard to make sure that it is sitting the way that he prefers. He’d hate to have to waste time on a game day combing his life’s work instead of studying his second love, football. He looks down and discovers that he fell asleep in his favorite Carhartt flannel shirt while watching reruns of M.A.S.H. Times were much simpler back then.

After brushing his teeth with charcoal and applying odorless deodorant, it’s time to pack his lunch pail with pre-game nutrition that has treated him well since he joined his 11th(ish) NFL team a few years ago. He starts by brewing coffee so strong that it can be mistaken for motor oil and he grabs 3 hard boiled eggs out of hotel’s mini fridge. Ryan used to love his eggs over easy until teammates started making fun of the leftover egg yoke left in his beard. Ryan prefers as little attention as possible. The only thing that he wants is to continue to perfect his craft.

Ryan hops on the team bus with his pail and coffee thermos. He doesn’t sit next to anyone. He’d like to be alone with his thoughts and Keith Urban playing at a moderate volume in his stock iPhone headphones. Ryan snaps out of his daze as the team arrives at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. He is the only person who knows what he is about to accomplish at this place on this day. He is the only man who has visualized the deep missiles that he is going to navigate to Mike Evans and Desean Jackson. The savior has arrived. Some quarterbacks eat W’s while others achieve them.

Sunday Quick Hits

  • Sticking with Tampa, I’m surprised at how well Mike Evans played. I faded him in my rankings. I didn’t see any of this coming. I’m sorry, Mike Evans.
  • Congratulations to Hue Jackson. It is a lock that the Browns will not finish 0-16. Progress is progress. There wasn’t much to take away from this game. The weather was awful. Ben Roethlisberger continued his tradition of looking absolutely awful on the road. Jarvis Landry is going to do very well in this offense. Josh Gordon will see better days. At least he found the end zone.
  • Alex Collins found the end zone but didn’t do much else. Once again, this was more about the weather than anything. Collins will be fine.
  • Joe Mixon is starting to show what he is capable of. He looked really relaxed. It was great to see his play making abilities.
  • Speaking of play-making abilities, just when it looked like Saquon Barkley was going to put up a stinker in his debut, he busted off a huge touchdown run and finished as one of the top performing running backs of week 1.
  • Andrew Luck looked great in his return. Kirk Cousins looked good in his debut with the Vikings. He is clicking with both Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs.
  • I’m still going to start Chris Hogan next week. It seemed fluky that he wasn’t that involved. It is true what they say about starting any Patriot besides Brady and Gronkowski is a gamble.
  • I think Deshaun Watson will be fine too. The Patriots are a tough team to play on the road.
  • Tyfreak is at it again. The season that he could have with Pat Mahomes under center might be legendary. Tyreek can beat any secondary and now he has a quarterback that can let it fly.
  • Business as usual on Sunday for elite wide receivers such as Keenan Allen and A.J. Green,
  • Austin Ekeler looks like he is going to be a big part of the Charger’s offense.
  • Matt Breida and Alfred Morris split carries this week and neither took the running back job by the horns. Alfred didn’t help himself by fumbling.
  • Dion Lewis looks to be a huge part of what the Titans are doing. That is not good for Derrick Henry owners.
  • Kenny Stills is a stud. This is just the beginning of a big year for him.
  • Kenyan Drake didn’t have the best game but the weather was awful in Miami. I expect the 17 touches that he saw on Sunday to be lower than the standard.
  • Last but not least, be sure to check out Rudy’s 7-day free trial on his premium tools. It includes weekly projections, DFSbot and much more!

I’ll talk to you all in the comment section or on Wednesday for my Week 2 rankings.

12 team PPR with return yards worth same as rushing/receiving. weekly reset waivers and i’m winning this week even with mariota starting.
    QB (1) mariota/wentz
RB (2) barkley , royce , ajayi, coleman, clement (handcuff), booker (thought he was handcuff,
WR (2) k.allen, fitz, cobb, hurns, callaway (was ridley, i dropped after that ATL game where he wasn’t used, also callaway COULD’VE been a return guy, wasn’t, clearly he’s a drop now)
    TE (1) walker
    IR (1) jeffery
    kicker: prater
    DEF: BAL

    1. this look like good order to drop callaway for one of these: grant, brown (BAL), dede (like i thought, eventually used more than cole), ginn, j.grant MIA (27.2 points this week from returns AND some actual catches)

    2. drop hurns for a 2nd of these?

    3. best order for either dropping walker himself (if it’s pretty sure he’s gone a long time, which sounds likely) or dropping somebody else (i’m making so many WW claims here it’s very likely i’m not winning all these guys): dissly, j.smith (walker’s replacement), watson, ebron, hooper, gesicki, willson?

    4. doesn’t sound like i should be holding mariota here (he’s vs HOU and with the rest of my team it doesn’t sound like i have room for 3 QB’s to wait for mariota AND wentz), so drop him for which of (week 2’s matchups, WW’s go off monday night late (3 AM ish tuesday))
    keenum vs OAK
    flacco @ CIN
    eli @ DAL
    fitz vs PHI
this sounds like an easy keenum.

    5. RB replacement order for booker: lindsay, yeldon, murphy BUF (20.5 pts from returns mostly, and THAT team is going to be getting a TON of those all year), hines

    6. and i’m guessing since i just lost a pretty high drafted starter (walker) i should make my top claim the TE replacement here?

      MB says:

I like the idea of picking up John Brown, and Dede Westbrook (i view him as Jax #1 WR myself)

    • MB

      MB says:
      (link)

Whoops, hit enter too early. Jonnou Smith was supposed to be a thing last year but he has been stuck behind Walker. I think in the Titan’s offense that he has some upside. Dissly is in a weird two TE situation in Sea. Might be worth a shot depending on Baldwin’s diagnoses. None of the others really excited me. Ebron is probably safest.

      • CMUTIMMAH says:
        (link)

@MB: Dissly’s game is a complete anomaly. He might not have a 60 yard game for the rest of his career.

Ebron is the pick. (I’m also in the Delanie can’t Walker hole right now in multiple leagues. I wish Ebron was an option off the wire.)

Brown, Westbrook and probably Ginn are better options than Hurns and Calloway.

I’m kind of in love with Keenum’s situation in Denver. He’s playing a gun slinger role, and I think the 3 picks yesterday were just the bad side of the gun slinger luck. He has similar weapons as when he was in Minn, with Sanders and Thomas being a pretty close resemblance to Diggs and Thielen. OAK defense is likely bad still, so I’d roll with Keenum.

You seem obsessed with return yards. IMO – they are only worth chasing for guys that return kicks AND play on offense. IE – Tyreek Hill. There’s as much of a chance that you get a goose egg when playing returners. Additionally, with the kick off returns being down, it’s even hard to predict if a team that receives a lot of kickoffs will have a lot of return opportunities.
Therefore- Lindsay and Yeldon should be top targets. And I’d waiver order them right after Ebron (since you NEED a TE). Getting Lindsay would be an important handcuff for having Freeman, when either injury or continued sucking would lose him the job to Lindsay.

        • Better Call Limehouse says:
          (link)

@CMUTIMMAH: there was another rule change this year that will make actual kickoff returns go up a bit. has to do with what/where the D is allowed to set people on a kick return. it will also however mean the return team might have MORE differing guys return those kicks. i forgot the link where i read the details but it was easily found in google pretty sure.

          – on dede vs cole, one was a high end draft pick for WR last year, the other wasn’t drafted at all. eventually the talent usually wins on these things (i do get that with receivers it could take years for that to finalize)

          – we got more info on baldwin (2-4 weeks out likely). so where you putting ebron/watson/jonnu/dissly (the other SEA TE out for a while too i’m seeing, dickson)

          – that RB order look good (assume it is it wasn’t mentioned)

            • Better Call Limehouse says:
              (link)

@Better Call Limehouse: this certainly sounds like a streaming situation, here’s TE matchups:
              thomas CAR (olsen out)
this is starting to look like a streaming situation (which is fine, no moves limits here). here’s the matchups:
              ebron @ WAS
              watson vs CLE
              gesicki @ NYJ
jonnu vs HOU (might be gabbert though)
dissly @ CHI (dickson out 5 more weeks and baldwin 2-4)
              thomas @ ATL
some rankings might be out by tomorrow night in time for WW, maybe. only one i could find for more than 1 week being an “add and hold” would be dissly from the open roster spots at SEA.

              • Better Call Limehouse says:
                (link)

                @Better Call Limehouse:
crap, i forgot about vannett. that weakens dissly greatly, forgot SEA went into year with dickson/vannett as the likely catcher TE’s, dissly apparently a better blocking one. early rankings still showing olsen high up, obv i.thomas isn’t just a 1-1 so lower than where olsen is listed.

Would you drop john ross for dorsett? I know his upside but he seems to be boom or bust.

    • MB

      MB says:
      (link)

Eh, I guess. I feel like Dorsett is just as boom or bust as a Belicheck receiver. I could be wrong but I personally wouldn’t. Dorsett has been due to have a breakout year though.

      • B says:
        (link)

@MB: yeah, I could see that happening as well, I have enough receivers otherwise, I may just see how Ross does then. He could be just as big of a breakout if he can find some consistency. Thanks!

        • MB

          • CMUTIMMAH says:

@MB: I’d hold Ross. More upside. Dorsett becomes useless when Edelman is back, and that’s when it all matters anyways.

2 qb league, need to move things areoind
    My rb: burkhead/Mack/Coleman/booker/aekler
    My we: AB/ Diggs/ Baldwin/ Jeffrey
    My qb: Watson/mariota/Keemun/rivers
    TE: Kelce

    Thinking over 2 trades:
    1) trade AB for leveon bell and James Conner
    2) trade Keemun/Kelce/Baldwin for D. Hopkins and G. Kittle

    Thanks

    • MB

      MB says:
      (link)

I wouldn’t panic about Kelce. He saw a lot of targets and there was some depth to them. I would do that for Hopkins and Kittle though. I’d do the other trade too.

      @Wilson Moreno:

follow up on IDP – never done this before

what is your best insight for these players?
My assumption is go for the guys who got the most tackles instead of the rare TD/Sack producers from week one, so
or stream according to IDP rankings?

DE: Bethea/Fejedelem over DWard, McDougald, MButler, and E Thomas (few names i recognize)
LB: Are Vigil and Warner more valuable than TJ Watt going forward?
DL: seems like the toughest one (recognize Atkins/S.Richardson)

      • MB

        MB says:

In IDP, depending on scoring, I tend to chase tackles. No, I don’t think so. I think TJ is pretty valuable

  7. Filkarri says:
    (link)

Thoughts on either Ian Thomas or Jonnu Smith to replace Delanie Walker? I have the number 2 waiver priority and the person in front of me almost certainly won’t be picking up a tight end so I can get either. Or do you think wait and not burn my waiver move and grab whoever is still available? I assume the person who lost Olsen will be grabbing a tight end as well.

    • MB

      MB says:
      (link)

@Filkarri: I’d rather save that priority if it stays in order week to week (meaning you keep your position if you don’t use it.) Jonnu is my preference. I think he should clear waivers if there are other TEs like Ebron on the wire

      • Filkarri says:
        (link)

@MB: Ebron is already rostered so it goes without saying TE is crazy thin on waivers. This is probably turning into a streaming situation anyway so I think I’ll hold off and see who clears waivers. Thanks!

        • MB

          MB says:
          (link)

@Filkarri: yikes! Well in that case I’d take a shot on Jonnu for the upside. Who knows, may not have to stream!

please don’t lose by less than 13 please don’t lose by less than 13, or i’ll have gotten a loss only from not being aware we’re in the ONE RCL that couldn’t add any players preseason between draft and season. vinateri (said BEFORE his 13 point game and available) was who i’d have gotten had i been able. need gurley not to have a big game and staff infection to not do well rest of this game (still a LOT of this game left too)

good god darnold looks decent right away too. when’s the last time the NYJ had a non-mccown look even REMOTELY decent. it’s pre butt fumble for sure.

      • Eli Man Penguin Boy says:
        (link)

@MB: i barely won, sans kicker, and like you said, that staff infection got you. if he not owned in that league? our waivers are late wed (trust me that time is now BURNED INTO BRAIN) so later than any of my other leagues. i got j.allen (for kicker) and probably somebody else to drop (SOOOO many possible ROS TE guys suddenly available, i have no backup yet). when staff went out in early 3rd i thought you were completely done, but had he done well in 2nd half you could’ve easily won (he came back way faster than i’d have thought)

  10. William Hung says:

@MB: Here’s my current team as I head into Week 2 – the only saving grace is that I play in a 10 team league so I still have a “shot”…

    .5 PPR
    QB- Luck
    RB- Fournette, McCaffrey
    WR- Baldwin, Cooks, Diggs
    TE- Eifert
    FLEX- Barber
    Bench
RB- Duke Jr., Derrick Henry, Breida
    WR- John Brown, Robert Woods

My regret in drafting Baldwin was immediately realized as he’s out for 2-4 weeks with that MCL sprain… do you think he’s going to be productive at all this year? On the plus side, I can slide him into an IR spot. Gonna need to work the wire to find that hidden gem WR

    • Joey Jo Jo Jr Shabadoo says:
      (link)

@William Hung: you might be able to improve on duke as well here. my first time owning baldwin too (and have goodwin, and stashed dez in case of signing, in a 14 teamer, dez will be gone as i’ll need WR help quickly)

    • MB says:
      (link)

@William Hung: yeah I think that he’s IR spot-worthy. Liked what I saw out of the Darnold-Enunwa connection last night so Enunwa might be the hidden gem that you need

14 team PPR. dez is clearly a drop. baldwin out a while, goodwin maybe this week too (neither will be DLable till later in week). FAAB here too so gotta bid something tomorrow night. still won this week with 2 zeros in the WR slots.

    QB luck, trubisky
RB (2) mixon/burkhead/crowell (glad i played him)/morris (drafted mckinnon then blew a large part of budget on morris)/montgomery/gio B (he might be a drop for another WR along with dez)
WR (3) AB, goodwin, baldwin, richardson, dez
    TE (1) doyle
    1 flex
IR (2 slots, so eventually room for baldwin, maybe could wait for the 2nd WR addition) jeffery
    K lambo
    LB (2) wagner, ogletree, hitchens
    DB (2) byard, j.adams
    DL (1) c.jones
WR options: taylor SF, pettis (these 2 at least one of i might want to get), a.wilson, JA brown SEA (same here), kearse, beasley, z.jones. jones and taylor with 6 targets, beasley 8.

    2. hold gio B or go for the WR depth 2nd out of that list for now, i sure need it with 2 injuries while already having jeffery on hold and dez as a farther off stash i don’t have time for any longer.

goff/cooks getting screwed statistically just like brady/cooks by cooks constantly getting grabbed, but not catching when grabbed. and OAK with 135 yards of penalties in 1st half, grudening in effect here. 2. drop any WR for any of: marshall, r.grant, meredith (meredith is who i dropped last minute for the extra LB for week 1)
    3. drop r.griffen TE for any/what order of: i.thomas, dissly (but he’s in a timeshare)
    4. somebody else likely to prioritize fitz more than me, but what chance you think he’s playing by luck’s bye (week 9)

@Yr Never Too Old For Balloons: no IR slots here is why i had to add a LB for barron out week 1. but that slot could eventually be the weekly replacement for certain bye week types going forward too.

@Yr Never Too Old For Balloons: no I think it’s Ivory.
No I wouldn’t for any of those.
No, it sounds like Olsen will be playing by October and I’d like to see Dissly do it again.
I honestly don’t know. It’s going to depend on how he does the next two. If he plays well, I don’t think Jameis is back in week 4
