"We did it guys!"

“We did it guys!”

I’m looking at this as less of a victory for Tom Brady and more of a defeat for Roger Goodell. And, of course, the aforementioned mother of Jimmy Garoppolo. My heart goes out to her. If you didn’t hear, Tom Brady’s four-game suspension was overturned by U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman yesterday. The suspension was handed down by my personal lord and savior Roger Goodell because of Deflategate, a minor issue that didn’t get much coverage at all, taking a backseat to that “Falcons funneling noise into their stadium” ordeal. Here was Berman’s official ruling:

“Because there was no notice of a four-game suspension in the circumstances presented here, Commissioner Goodell may be said to have ‘dispensed his own brand of industrial justice’… The court finds that Brady had no notice that he could receive a four-game suspension for general awareness of ball deflation by others.”

The NFL will appeal the decision, because I guess Goodell’s incompetance in the matter needs to compound further, but the most important aspect, fantasy-wise, is that the epoch of Jimmy Garoppolo has ended before it even began. And that my friends, is a travesty…

Tom Brady’s status as a draftable quarterback has returned, and I have re-ranked him right behind Drew Brees as sixth highest at the position. (I have also updated projections and auction values which can be found here.) This also solidifies production for all offensive principles like Rob Gronkowski, and whatever white receiver and full back they throw out there when in the red zone.

As I mentioned earlier, this seems like a bigger loss for Goodell than a win for Brady, but an unnoticed aspect might be the huge win this is for the NFLPA. Long heralded by myself (and many others) as one of the weakest player unions in pro sports, this is now four straight highly visible defeats for Goodell. The others being double-suspending Ray Rice and being overturned, sweeping penalties against the Saints being overturned, and retroactively penalizing Adrian Peterson under the NFL’s new domestic violence policy. True, these were all actions against either sh*tty human beings or sh*tty team ethics, but in the case of Deflategate, I’m not sure who could bring themselves to really care about this issue. I only cared at first because of all the ball jokes I could make, but even that gets tiring after a while. From a fantasy perspective (because I guess I have to), I would say this might have far-reaching implications in the way suspensions are appealed by players. We are already seeing this with another sh*tty human being, Greg Hardy. This is what happens when you are your own arbiter and have zero effort to create a standardized policy to handle such cases. So I guess thanks for being incompetent Roger Goodell?

Oh god. And seriously, why a hyphen and not a period? Even Trump with a 140-character limit is mind-altering stupid…

haha Saddam Hussein would run the NFL better than Roger Goodell. I thought they had some kind of exemption from Congress that lets them operate as a bona fide socialist monopoly and he could suspend anyone for vague integrity reasons?

I’m happy though, I drafted him in my keeper league for $13 and got Bridgewater for $1. Long live the Golden Boy!

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Mike: I think the owners love him though. He takes all the bad press so everyone ignores the owners, and he does whatever they say and want. Perfect situation. Nice on that price though.

      • The Harrow says:
        (link)

@Jay: not quite “exactly” what they say and want. i’m sure NO/NE/MIN are somewhat tired of this douchebag wanna be Hitler using their franchises to attempt to make himself look more powerful (of course it’s ended up making him look stupider). I’m sure they are happy he’s the NFL’s boogeyman in the minds of everyone, while they themselves get to dodge any bad press. He’s the brain damaged drunk cousin wearing the SS uniform marching at everybody’s wedding that makes their own inebriated hijinks get ignored while they make use $100’s to light their cigars.

@The Harrow: Right, I meant more “majority” wise, which I think is all that matters. But yeah, agreed on that man.

  2. Packers says:
    (link)

In a 12 team 2 qb league 4 pts for tds and drafting 11th would you get 2 qbs first? They go fast with these guys I’m playing. Question 2. What level rb or wr would have to be there at pick 14 to not take a 2nd qb? For example your number 4 or 5th ranked player at those positions. It’s a ppr 1 point league too.

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Packers: Yeah, it’s either QB/QB/RB this year or QB/RB/QB, depending on the names out there.

  3. Steve says:
    (link)

Hardy shouldn’t even be in the league, never mind appealing a suspension that’s already too short.

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

      @Steve: Agreed.

    • The Harrow says:
      (link)

@Steve: one could argue that the NFL is probably the 2nd best place he should be for his skill set, to prison. These are, after all, modern day gladiators. Some of the very skills/mindsets that make these guys great at football might not really lead generally to being what’s considered a “normal, society-cohesive person” in our modern times.

@Jay: if tis a keeper give me the yeldon side.. otherwsie its pretty much even (Gore being much safer than Martin but all things considered I’d rank around the same this season.. Yeldon v Freeman is a roll of the dice.. Yeldon has a better 3-down back build but Freeman is in a great system for his strengths)

        • Jay

          Jay says:

@Sam: there’s no way Gore and Martin are ranked the same. He’s like 15 spots behind for me… I have a hard time agreeing on that one.

Had my first draft last night. 14 team, PPR, auction. Grabbed RB anywhere I could and have some work to do at WR. Was offered E Sanders and TY for Lacy and Crowell, pull the trigger?

    QB: Ryan
    WR: B Marsh
    WR: E Royal
    RB: Lacy
    RB: CJ Anderson
    Flex: Ingram
    Flex: TJ Yeldon
    B: Sankey
    B: Crowell
    B: Tre Mason
    B: Moncrief
    B: R Randle

    Thanks!

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@eltoo: Hold. I’m not crazy about your WR’s either, but I don’t like giving up Lacy. I think Royal might be something this year.

      • Sam says:
        (link)

@Jay: Would not make that deal. Easier to find diamonds in the rough off the wire at WR than RB.. perhaps give Tavon Austin a whirl.. Fisher says they have designed plays specifically for him. Looked alright last night. Guy had all the upside in the world 2 years ago.. real post hype sleeper there.

        • The Harrow says:
          (link)

@Sam: really, as very often it’s probably the opposite concerning “diamonds in the rough at RB/WR”. It probably is easier to find sufficiently decent WR than RB overall, but some of the very best RB year in year out come from backups drafted in late rounds (Hill stands out for last year). 2nd and 3rd/4th string RB that get playing time due to injuries/demotions end up being top 20 guys all the time, but how often do WR’s in that same description do that? This probably has most to do with RB getting injured more than WR of course, not from a skills thing.

    • Steve Stevenson says:
      (link)

@eltoo: Agree, don’t make the deal, but I’d offer Ingram for Hilton straight up, and failing that maybe one of your lesser RB for Sanders.

  8. G says:

    Hey Jay,

Wanted to get your take on the team I just drafted which i am real excited about. Wondering if you see any areas of weakness or need for early trade. It’s a 12 team Ppr with 6 pt passingTDs and one flex. I had the second pick and couldn’t believe Calvin was available to me at my second pick. AJ green and Alfred amorous are players Id never think of own but where they were available seemed right to take.

    Matt Ryan
    Leveon Bell
    Ellington
    Calvin Johnson
    AJ Green
    Mike Wallace
    Eifert
Flex/bench: alfred Morris, Kendall wright, Quick, Crowell, Backup QB and TE: cutler, Ertz

    • Jay

  11. Duke says:
    (link)

    Jay,

I’m going 2nd in my main PPR league this year (12-team 2rb/2wr/flex). Why wouldn’t I take Antonio Brown here? Is it just RB scarcity and more depth at WR that most ‘perts don’t?

    • G says:
      (link)

      @Duke:

Hey man. I just listed my roster above. I had the same draft spot as you with the second in a 12 team PPR. I took Bell first and somehow wound up with Calvin Johnson and AJ green in rounds 2 and 3. I didn’t think that was possible getting great receivers like that and my league has experienced drafters. Even if Calvin or AJ aren’t there you can snag two of Cooks, Evans, Mathews, Hilton, Jeffrey with your next two picks after taking a stud RB in the first. Just figured I’d chime in. Was tempted to take Brown also.

      • Jay

        Jay says:
        (link)

@G: This works too. Calvin has been falling a lot, which is a fantastic thing for those in the right position.

      • Duke says:
        (link)

@G: Thanks G, that is awesome you were able to get those guys, sick team man. I’ve been doing a lot of mocks and haven’t seen those guys come back, though Cobb sometimes lasts, and I’m all about getting Cooks. Having said that this is an experienced league but there’s a few who just insist on taking QBs early so I do think someone will fall.

I think that will be better to take the RB as I usually feel like I have to take Lamar Miller or Ingram in rd 2/3 then. I’m pretty sure #1 is taking Bell and I also can’t decide which of the other 3 I like the best. Also, I owned Brown last year and the dude was such a joy to watch rack up points that I have a huge man-crush on him now haha.

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Duke: My rankings say you should go Brown second.

      • Duke says:
        (link)

@Jay: Let’s face it I’m going to keep waffling until I’m actually on the clock tomorrow and have to finally do something. Thanks dudes.

        • Jay

          Jay says:
          (link)

@Duke: Oh yeah, amen to that. Honestly, the 2nd overall pick to probably the 4th or 5th are really difficult to nail down this season in all formats.

  12. Blergball says:
    (link)

Drop Marvin Jones or Terrance West for Matt Jones?

    • Jay

      Jay says:

@lamar killed my vibe: I still like him, but it always depends on who you would be getting back.

  14. Hoog says:
    (link)

jay! Drafting the first year of a PPR keeper league. It’s a .75 PPR with 3 wr, 2rb, and a flex position. With it being a three wr league how would you change your draft approach (if you even would). Do you go with a top WR even if it’s a top pick? It’s only 8 teams so pretty shallow, but I think 8 bench spots. Thanks!

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Hoog: Depends on the WR. I like Brown and Julio in that format, otherwise, RB is still good there.

  15. Kevin says:
    (link)

In a yahoo 12 team standard league,

who wins in the trade? john brown + amari cooper -or- arian foster + chris ivory?

also, would you trade your matt forte for Gronk? straight up?

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Kevin: Forte for Gronk is fine, but it matters who’s replacing the spots. I like the Foster side if you need running backs.

  16. Blint says:
    (link)

    Hi Jay ,

Just had my draft don’t know how I did . My keepers were good AP, Jamaal Charles and Gronk!

12 team deep rosters 1 point PPR. We start 1 QB, 2 WR,2 RB,1 TE, 1 W/T and 1 W/R/T plus kicker and defense. So 8 roster starts

    QB- Romo , Flacco

RB- Jamal Charles, AP, Woodhead,Sankey, Reggie Bush,Knile Davis,Mckinnon

    WR-Brandin Cooks, Edelman,Martavis Bryant,Stevie Johnson,

TE- Gronk , Tyler Eifert,Larry Donnel

    K-Crosby Defense- Miami

I think my WR are weak for this format? Free agents available after sorting by most owned are like Bowe, Lockett,Britt, Sanu,Welker, Hankerson,Amendola, Andre Hawkins, Woods,Kearse!

Should I add anyone ? Thanks you so much!!

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Blint: I think you did well. I don’t think you need Flacco, but there aren’t many adds there as of yet. Maybe a Britt for depth against Edelman. Eifert is probably your next drop when you need someone.

      • Blint says:
        (link)

        @Jay:
        Thanks jay :)

But sankey situation change after the trade titans did? Also Edelman might miss the first game so I am pretty thin in WR! Martavius Bryant willmiss the first four games for me as a well. Should I pickup Amendola or Aiken ?

  17. Dave says:
    (link)

    Hey Jay,

How do you think I did in my 10 team 2qb PPR league here’s my squad

    QB – Brady
    QB – Stafford
    WR – Calvin Johnson
    WR – Cooks
    WR – Amari Cooper
    RB – Lacy
    RB – Hyde
    TE – Eifert
    FLEX – Charles Johnson

    Bench – Joique Bell
    Bench – Garcon
    Bench – Tevin Coleman
    Bench – Tyrod Taylor
    Bench – Vernon Davis

What you think? And do I need to make a move maybe trade a receiver to upgrade at RB or I’m fine there.

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Dave: Looks like a good balance, nothing super elite here, but that’s not a bad thing with your production spread out. I think you’re okay there, but reassess after a few weeks.

  18. Dom B says:

      @Dom B: I’d hold.

  19. P says:

Not sure if you’re still reading comments here, but thought you’d get a kick out of the following excerpt from the CBS fantasy sports auto-generated recap of my draft, especially since I thought I reached for Kelce and got woodhead as a steal…..

“Your best pickup of the draft was Travis Kelce, who we thought should have have been selected around the 34th slot, but who you got with pick #44. However, you mixed in some duds as well, the worst of whom was Danny Woodhead, whose projections suggested that he should have gone undrafted.”

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@P: Yeah, all the site’s reactions to the draft are on drugs. Woodhead should most definitely not go undrafted in any formats…

  20. What's a Drexl? says:
    (link)

in that same league where i’m trying to risk losing Quick (where you thought having s.johnson is ok anyway over him if i lose quick) to get Jordy, and already having Ingram/Julio/Olsen/Hyde/McCoy/Allen/Robinson as possible other top 5 keepers, if i don’t get Jordy, how would Gordon rank as compared to Benjamin (i.e. is gordon for next year good enough to keep if we keep 6). Somebody brought this one up in the Tehol post (although that guy thought Gordon was a BETTER stash than Jordy, which i don’t necessarily agree with)

    • Jay

      Jay says:

@What’s a Drexl?: Gordon is no where close to being a better stash than Jordy. I’d actually rather have Benjamin too.

Than at WR, available are Malcolm Floyd, G Jennings, Reggie Wayne or Kenny Stills,? I have starting Ty Hilton, Cooper & Garcon with Charles Johnson , Wheaton, Roddy White riding the bench

Lot more actually available on waivers but wont know whos going to rise to stardom till week 1 begins

I am way down on the Waivers so if any of these guys impress in week 1, I won’t get them.

    My roster (2 rb/wr & flex):

Howdy Jay! My draft is quickly approaching: it’s Wednesday sept 9 day before the season starts, my question is we have two keepers & the keeper lock date is tomorrow Sunday.

It’s .5 ppr ; I need to pick 2 out of these; Demaryius Thomas, Odell Beckham Jr & Jeremy hill.

Keeper set up is rounds 1 & 2 are keeper selections; round 3 is when the snake draft starts, this keeper is just year to year meaning not locked in forever can change who I want to keep for 2016, etc.

    • Makin it Wayne says:
      (link)

      @Makin it Wayne:

When the snake begins I have pick 6 out of 10 teams

Here are potentially the players who will be available , Le’veon bell (that owner is keeping luck & Graham instead), cj Anderson , Calvin Johnson , Mike Evans, maybe Gronk & TY Hilton (that owner of Gronk / Hilton has a tough choice, also had Lacy & Rodgers) , looks like Antonio brown isn’t going to be kept Brown owner looks to be keeping Peyton & he said his other keeper is going to be Demarco Murray . If he changes his mind then Murray will be in the mix too

      • Jay

        Jay says:
        (link)

@Makin it Wayne: I just want to add, the guy keeping Luck isn’t smart at all. That’s like drafting Luck in the first two rounds, makes no sense unless he’s from Indiana.

      • Makin it Wayne says:
        (link)

        @Jay:

Thanks jay! Would you do this, if I don’t keep DT or OBJ, either WR would you trade before the keeper lock date for a bunch of picks?

        • Jay

          Jay says:

@Makin it Wayne: I would trade DT probably. I’m slightly uncomfortable with Manning right now.

I would be getting the green side to make Julio Jones and Green my starting WR

          Jay says:

@Timmy Shankenstien: you’d be better off using one of the bench spots you have a backup TE in with a RB if you only have 4 RB’s. Do that trade and grab 2 RB’s, dropping Rudolph.

@Ron Darling: you’d be trading 2 guys to get one, which opens up a roster spot, then also drop rudolph for a 2nd RB. My 2nd sentence mentioned dropping Rudolph

@Let Us Now Praise Famous Death Dwarves: or just drop eifert for a RB now and save mcfadden if he’s really that much better than free agent RB’s.

Hey, Jay! Would you go Forte or Marshawn after AP, Bell, Charles, and Lacy? Thanks and enjoy the weekend!

@Jerry: I’m really like Forte this season.

on wed drafting my first 2 QB (actual 2 QB, not a super flex) league. 12 team, .5 PPR. 2 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 2 Flex (can be TE), 1 K, 1 team D, 4 IDP of any kind (so really only top S class is draftable if everything goes well by Kevin’s rankings). .1 for completions, -3 for picks, 6 for passing TD’s, -.5 for sacks against, small bonuses for going over, 2/3/4 for passing 300/350/400, 2/3/4 for rushing 100/150/200, same for catching as rushing. Sacks 2, tackles .75. Dynasty also (which i’m sure changes a lot in spots).

    1. at pick 2 overall, do i take Bell or Luck or Rodgers (if luck is gone)? If these people know what they are doing if i go non-QB i’ll likely get Rivers or worse as QB #1.
    2. assuming i have to go either QB/best young player (RB or WR)/QB/best young player at RB/WR spot i didn’t go 2nd round or Bell/QB/QB/WR?
    3. pretty much gotta be one of the 8 teams that in theory should have 3 starting QB’s yes?
    4. and if 3 is right, that means 3 QB by the 8th or 9th round i would think?
    5. Gurely/Gordon, and to lesser extent lesser young RB/WR go up about how many spots at their positions?

Due to age it surely seems like Bell or maybe Brown are the only non-QB’s who could even BE drafted at pick 2 overall due to the dynasty thing. All other top RB are much older than Bell.

@Let Us Now Praise Famous Death Dwarves: Go Rodgers or Luck (Luck first). I like your QB/Best/QB/Best combo. I think you can go two QB’s and just sit on a lower tier one later than that to backup. Gordon. True, but QB leagues always throw things into whack.

@Jay: rivers/romo or one of bridgewater/tannehill in this one, it’s likely i’ll have this choice as QB #2 in the 3rd round (pick 26). Projections say Rivers, but Tannehill is close and much younger. Bridgewater could approach this territory by next year too i would think maybe.

Jay! Preseason keeper trade question. 12-team standard, $200 budget. I’m expecting ~35% keeper inflation this year. Would you make this trade?

My current keepers: Luck ($26), Gronk ($33), Gordon ($1), DGB ($1)

    Lose: Luck – $26 (2015), option for $41 (2016), $46 (2017)

    Get: Ingram – $13 (2015), option for $28 (2016), $33 (2017)
    Hyde – $18 (2015), option for $33 (2016), $38 (2017)

@Charles: That inflation on Ingram is crazy. To be honest, I’d hold.

20 team league, sturgis just lost his job to franks. grab franks or go with scobee, fantasy pros loved MIA’s kicker when it was sturgis.
