Cowboys and Eagles! It’s like a rancher’s dream or a hunter’s nightmare, I dunno. I imagine there’s an alternate universe out there where Clint Eastwood hunts eagles from horseback, his fetch dog trained to track down the poor bird after it plummets from the sky. In a big enough multiverse, there’s also a reality where eagles are hunting Clint Eastwood like some sort of Mothra movie. What should we name the mega eagle monster? Meagle! It’s like some sort of egotistical id-driven avian nemesis. ENYWHEY. In our actual world — where Captain America is busy saving us from Thanos — the Cowboys opened as the -170 favorites over the Eagles, although they were favored to win by only a field goal. Did Zach Ertz finally show up? Did Dak impress? Let’s hurdle over the jump and find out!

Ezekiel Elliott: Let’s put it this way: I made a contrarian DFS lineup in a 10,000+ entry tournament with Zeke as the Captain. I thought that was a significant move, but then I looked up the utilization percentages, and 28% of the group had Zeke as captain. What happens when the contrarian choice is the chalk choice? Zeke blasted into the endzone a few times, but Rudy was less than impressed. Zeke’s performances have largely been based on his usage and his previous massive utilization in the passing game. We’ve seen Zeke’s role in the Cowboys’ passing game decline and his struggles to gain yards are also documented, but a game against the Eagles offered some opportunities to rebuild his rushing reputation. Say that three times fast! Fingers crossed for our second round evaluations that Zeke gets some more usage, but the porous Cowboys DEF might demand that Dak throws more often.

Zach Ertz: Now that we’ve lost the Darnold to D.Arnold connection in Carolina, the Hurts to Ertz connection is the next best meme pairing that we can manage. If you remember back to the preseason — all of a month ago — people weren’t drafting Ertz because new Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni wanted to trade the elite Eagles’ tight end. Unfortunately, Ertz’ famed suitor — Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick — acquired two different starting tight ends in the off-season not named Ertz, and he refused to pay the draft pick price to acquire Ertz. So, Ertz and Sirianni went out camping and looked at the stars and sat naked and howled like wolves and came back best friends. Now, Ertz played in one game before taking a Covid holiday, and in his return fresh from the Fauci fever, Ertz connected with a struggling Hurts to give the Eagles a much-needed touchdown in the third quarter. Hurts will be figuring out his receivers throughout the year, so Ertz could have sneaky DFS upside until he reminds Sirianni of his previous years as one of the top TE in the league.

Dalton Schultz: Last year, I had Blake Jarwin everywhere. Then Jarwin went and got injured in the first game of the season and the “next man up” backup went and got himself some legs for racing around the field. Schulz torched the Eagles for two scores, and on the second, he basically juked half the defense while rumbling into the endzone. Take a look at this play — he outruns 6 defenders by my count? If he can do that on a semi-regular basis, that’s ridiculous yards after the catch potential and worthy of making your fantasy roster.

Jalen Hurts: “Konami Code” QB, right? Based on stats alone, I had Jalen Hurts as QB 4 in my original rankings. Then coach Sirianni messed with Hurts’ head and threatened to start Joe Flacco and things kind of fell apart. And by “fell apart” I mean Hurts was QB4 going into the week. But, small sample size. The Cowboys DEF — which had allowed the second-most total yards from scrimmage in the league — seemed to figure out Hurts and picked him off twice with one being returned for a TD. Hurts is young and will make some mistakes, which will be frustrating for the weekly redraft managers out there. For the bestball managers and DFS players, you’re salivating at garbage time right now, aren’t you? ENYWHEY. Hurts has the Madden stats to be the next “big thing,” but it might take a few games for him to get warmed up. Does anybody remember when Lamar Jackson debuted in 2018? Week 10. Give Hurts some time to learn the NFL and then tune into every game in the second half.
