I guess Vincent Jackson has been on maternity leave.  That really makes those DUI’s bad business.  But he finally has a time table to return to the playing field.  There are a whole slew of logistics that are boring and money driven, but suffice it to say, he will be suiting up to play in week 12 of this season.  Unlike Sidney Rice, who we can question health-wise, we know VJax at least will be rested.  He will also be playing for cash, so I don’t see him coming back with a beer gut (but that would be funny).

So this leaves you with a decision.  There’s a chance he is hanging out in your free agency pool and you need to decide if it is worth picking him up.  Let’s look at the numbers.  There is a good chance your championship game is week 16, so that cuts the total games you can start him to 5.  And if you aren’t a front runner, you may only really need him in the regular season to help you possibly make it into the postseason, so there is a chance you could have him on your bench for 6 weeks and then only actually use him for 2-3 weeks.  If you have a 5 player bench that might be insane.  If you have a 7-8 player bench there is a chance he is already sitting on someone elses bench. Bench whore.

But say he is out there and you have enough bench space? Grab him! And if you have just a few bench spots, but have an easy player to drop right now?  Grab him! You can always try to trade him or just drop him again when you need to.

His weeks 12-16 schedule is @IND, OAK, KC, SF, @CIN.  Not great, but not horrible and the way Rivers is playing he is going to be useful.  But what about our man Malcolm Floyd? That sir is a great question and I’m glad you asked. Floyd gets the shaft.  He is currently the 4th overall receiver in fantasy points and will continue to get his targets for 6 more weeks, but right when you need him the most he’ll be playing second fiddle to VJax and you need him playing wide receiver not joining some friggin fiddle orchestra!

Floyd’s weeks 6-11 schedule is @STL, NE, TEN, @HOU, BYE, DEN.  That is a pretty nice set up there (except BYE, those dudes shut everybody out), but the closer you get to VJax’s return the further his trade value plummets.  I would see what you can get for him.  You need to win those playoff games and Floyd might help you get there, but he’s not going to have much of a chance to help you win. And if you can get someone that might help you now and later for him, I’d do it.

My weekly post is up at the N.Y. Times Football Blog

This is now my screensaver

Our weekly contest is in full swing

And we need a few more managers for our week 6 FanDuel league

  1. Ken Plane says:
    (link)

Doc – At this point how high of a WR or QB should I shoot for with a trade of Forte?

  2. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

Got a pretty decent collection of WRs in a 12 team league – Wayne, Austin, Ward, Williams (TB), DezB, Tate. We play 3 and have a WR/RB flex position.

Would you drop anyone for Bob Meachem?

He’s on waivers, but looks like his 2nd half performance from last season might make a reappearance.

  3. Pepe Silvia says:
    (link)

Just grabbed VJax! Can’t thank you enough, Doc!

  4. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

Different league…I have another nice collection of WRs where we play 3 and have a WR/RB flex position. I have Wayne, White, Marshall, Boldin, Holmes, Colston.

All of my backs besides CJ2K are injured in one way or another (Best, Hillis, DMC, Moreno).

Is Forte worth targeting, and if so, who would you use to target him? The owner (my Pops) needs some WRs bad.

    Thanks.

  5. hideousmutants says:
    (link)

ESPN has SJax rated low in their projections (which routinely suck).

Given my other options, I’m considering benching him. Which guy would you pick for Flex in a PPR league?

    SJax
    Floyd
    Felix Jones
    Colston

(starting JC and Turner at RB and Moss and Wayne at WR)

  6. Griff says:
    (link)

    Hey Doc,

I’m thinking about dropping Forsett for Reggie Bush. The Lynch trade seems like a huge blow to Forsett, and news on Bush’s injury is good. Who do you see having more value for the rest of the year?

  7. Art Vandelay says:
    (link)

How do you rank these QBs going forward and is it close? Schaub, Big Ben, Flacco.

  8. 24hourjack says:
    (link)

how much value do you see in Danny Woodhead and Deji Karim?……..

and would you drop Tim Hightower for either of them?……..

    I currently have T. Jones,Willis McGahee and Hightower as my RB2 options……..

    12 team non PPR league….

  9. slim shady says:
    (link)

LOL @ “Cockblocking Charles Fantasy Owners”

    Photoshop?

Also which side of the trade do you like more?

Forte and H. Ward vs R. Wayne

    NON PPR

  10. alex says:
    (link)

Good lord, how long have you had a blog at the NY Times? That’s awesome, congratulations!

  11. Pepe Silvia says:
    (link)

“Chet Gresham” sounds like even more of a fake name than “Doc.”

    jk, congrats on the gig.

  12. Isles Guru says:
    (link)

    Doc,

    Keeper league question….

    Who would you rather have?

Crabtree ($5) and Hernandez ($1) OR Harvin ($7).

This is a PPR league with extra points for return yards and touchdowns which gives Harvin a nice bump.

  13. nick m. says:
    (link)

Who would you rather have for the rest of the year in PPR – Santonio Holmes or Danny Amendola?

  14. The Vaporizers says:
    (link)

    My bench consists of:

Tolbert, Spiller, M WIlliams (TB), B. Tate, A Hernandez and Favre.

Do you drop any of these guys for Jackson? I would potentially be starting Jackson over Santana Moss in my WR3 (White and Austin already)

  15. Matt Leinart says:
    (link)

What do you think of this trade?

I would be getting Flacco, giving Mike Wallace. I have Orton as my QB, so I’m not sure Flacco would start very often for me. I have Megatron, Marshall, Britt, and TB Williams so I could survive without Wallace. We play 3 WRs and a flex. I have many RB options for the flex spot.

Here’s the thing. I think Wallace is gonna be very good now that Ben is back. I also think I’ll be fighting this other team for a playoff berth, and I’m worried I might be helping him more than I’ll be helped (Wallace would replace Walter every week, while I would get 2 or 3 games from Flacco).

Should I hoard my WRs for now?

    Thanks.

  16. Big Nate says:
    (link)

Doc – Desperate at 1-4 to improve my team and looking to you to save my season. Here’s my lineup:

    QB – Schaub
    RB – Turner
    RB – S Greene
    FLEX – Lloyd
    WR – Nicks
WR – Crabtree / Holmes / Santana Moss
    TE – Witten

I have been offered MJD for both Greene and Nicks. At this point, I think it’s just a roll of the dice but my back is against the wall. Make the deal?

  17. Abe says:
    (link)

Hey Doc, I’m trying to replace Jermichael and was wondering what you thought would be the better move – pick up a decent tight end from waivers (Owen daniels, heath miller, moeaki, or pettigrew probably) or try and trade a bench player for a good one – i was thinking roy williams for zach miller (i’m loaded at WR with andre johnson and nicks and brandon tate on the bench). thanks

  18. Bebop Cola says:
    (link)

Three tricky lineup decisions this week in my standard PPR league:

Danny Amendola or Johnny Knox? Knox has potential to be huge, but Amendola feels like money in the bank.

Thomas Jones or Ricky Williams? Leaning toward Ricky, as Haley seems to be giving more carries to JC in KC.

Finally, Heath Miller or Jeremy Shockey. I know, it’s crazy to have two TEs on my roster. I picked up Shockey with the intent of dropping him after Big Ben gets back and Miller becomes usable again, but that Miami asshat has been surprisingly solid.

    I’d appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

  19. Beau says:

Whoa! Great problems for me with a wealth of great matchups…any advice? Hard to believe its a 10 teamer, no wonder im in 1st! Thanks razzball!

RB: Bradshaw (Det), Charles (hou), Best (nyg), Foster (kc), Mendenhall (cle)
WR: Andre (kc), nicks (det), jennings (mia), floyd (stl)
    QB: big ben or flacco?

I’m leaning towards starting big ben, mendenhall, bradshaw, foster, andre, and nicks. Any advice?

    The Fifth Down?

Is that at all like the 19th hole? After a successful 4th down play you get to sit and drink a beer and watch other players run 4th down plays?

    :)

Congrats on getting that coverage — impressive.

  21. stumanji says:
    (link)

Starting Gore & Torain at RB. Need to start 2 WR and 1 Flex from this group: Shonn Greene, Santonio, Britt, Crabtree, Garcon.

I’m leaning Greene, Santonio, and Britt. Agree?

  22. stumanji says:
    (link)

Also, Doc, have you ever thought about doing a Top 200 Overall and updating it every week or every other week? I know you do a lot, but that is one of the main features that I love about another fantasy site that I frequent, and it helps me a ton with trades and such.

  23. Jimmy says:
    (link)

PPR 12 team, VJax is available on waivers for one of my leagues. Should I drop one of these to snag him?

Felix Jones, Ryan Torain, Lynch, or Bess?

    team:
    QB Philip Rivers SDC
    QB Joe Flacco BAL
    RB Darren McFadden OAK
    RB Ray Rice BAL
    RB Felix Jones DAL
    RB Ryan Torain WAS
    RB Marshawn Lynch SEA
    RB Chris Wells ARI
    WR Hakeem Nicks NYG
    WR Malcolm Floyd SDC
    WR Randy Moss MIN
    WR Michael Crabtree
    WR Davone Bess MIA
    TE Antonio Gates SDC
    TE Heath Miller PIT

  24. stumanji says:
    (link)

@Jimmy: I’d drop Heath Miller for him.

  25. Rookie Season says:
    (link)

Which WR2 do you like for this week? [email protected] or [email protected]
Would you drop Mason for K. Walter, McCluster, GinnJr, Murphy, Armstrong. (We have 1pt for 30 Return Yards.)

Moreno has had hamstring problems on both legs this year. I’m questioning his effectiveness for the remainder of the season. Should I be shopping him around, even for active, lesser talent?

I have Oak [email protected] Do you like any of these other matchups?
[email protected], NEv.Bal, TBv.NO, [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], SFvOak, Jaxv.Tenn. StLv.SD. I know, nasty.

Sorry for the question flood this week. Thanks, Doc!

  26. Bebop Cola says:
    (link)

@Abe: If I were you, I’d pick up one of the guys you mentioned from waivers. You’re not going to pry a top TE away from someone by offering a bench WR.

Just don’t go with Owen Daniels — he’s not the same player he was a few years ago. Moeaki, Pettigrew or Heath are all better choices at this point.

  27. Big Nate says:
    (link)

@Jimmy: I’d drop Bess to grab VJax. Especially important for that Floyd handcuff…

  28. Doc

    Doc says:
    (link)

@Ken Plane: I think you can shoot fairly high. Not top tier, but RB/WR2. Bradshaw/Boldin

@Wilsonian: I see good things from all of your guys as well. I’d hold.

@Wilsonian: I would give Colston or Holmes.

    @hideousmutants: I’d still lean SJax.

@Griff: I think Bush will probably have more value.

@Art Vandelay: Yeah, pretty close. With Schaub’s slight decline I can see them all in the same tier right now. I still like Schaub the most, then Ben, Flacco

@24hourjack: I think I would stick with Hightower just to make sure the breakdown of carries isn’t fluky.

@slim shady: I hope so! I’m leaning the Forte side if it fits the team well.

    @alex: Just this season. Thanks.

@Pepe Silvia: Doc is my given name. Thanks.

@Isles Guru: Tough. I like Crabtree and AHer a lot. Even with the return yardage I think I would lean their way.

@nick m.: Hmm, that’s tough. I like Holmes a lot, but the PPR helps Danny. I’m going with Holmes, but it’s close.

  29. Needles says:
    (link)

Would you trade torain for pierre thomas. i would have sat to torain this week anyways. ppr league

  30. Needles says:
    (link)

i have cj. mccoy and jerrome harrison as my other rb’s.

  31. herschel says:
    (link)

@ Doc: 12 team ppr league. who do you like at flex?

    mcfadden
    crabtree
    d. bess
    h. miller

  32. stumanji says:
    (link)

Rather have for the rest of the year: Z. Miller or Keller?

  33. MJD Took A Knee says:
    (link)

I have Miami but not entirely sure if Rodgers will start. Pick up Dallas?

    Miami @GB
    Kansas City @HOU
    Dallas @MIN
    Minnesota vs DAL

  34. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

@Doc: thanks Doc…might offer up both for Forte, and because it’s such a small league I can pick up one of these guys off waivers:

Knox, Bess, Crabtree, Tate, MSW, Britt, Meachem, Murphy.

    What do you think?

  35. herschel says:
    (link)

@Doc: 12 team PPR. Have Vick and Rothlesberger for other QBs. Thoughts on me giving up Ryan and McFadden for Megatron and C. Benson?

  36. stumanji says:
    (link)

    @herschel: um, yes.

  37. herschel says:
    (link)

@stumanji: my thoughts too, just not sure if the megatron owner knows something about his shoulder that i dont. just lost finley for most if not all of the year, so im a little gun shy with injured players (although by that rationale, guess i should be wanting to dump mcfadden).

  38. stumanji says:
    (link)

@herschel: McFad will be a headache the rest of the year: Is he healthy? Who’s going to get the carries? And such and such.

Ryan is basically your 3rd QB, and he’s not an elite fantasy QB to begin with. You could probably even drop him and nobody would blame you. So you’re trading McFad for Megatron and Benson. No brainer.

  39. Doc

    Doc says:
    (link)

@The Vaporizers: I could see dropping Tate, but you should look at your byes and see how easily you think you can hold him for 6 weeks.

    @Matt Leinart: I keep Wallace

@Big Nate: I’d shop that same trade for someone a little healthier.

@Abe: i would play the matchups there. Moeaki has a nice game against Houston. I’d grab him for starters.

@Bebop Cola: You’re right about the risk reward on Knox and Amendola Cola. I’m leaning Knox for the upside. I’m leaning Jones just because he should see goal line carries whereas it could be Ronnie for Miami. I like Miller’s chance for a TD this weekend.

@Beau: I think you are right on there. Nice lineup!

@uncdrew: Thanks. The 5th down is the down you use to win National Championships.

@stumanji: I do, but those WRs are pretty much a toss up toward the end.

@stumanji: Yeah, I’ve thought about it and time really is the issue. I need a grant!

@Jimmy: You have pretty good depth so I could see dropping Miller for him. He could make a good trade chip in a few weeks if you are getting tired of holding onto him.

@Rookie Season: Holmes and SF. I’d give Moreno one more shot. If he gets hurt again, punch him.

    @Needles: I’d take PT

    @herschel: Crabs

    @stumanji: Miller

@MJD Took A Knee: Looking more likely that Rodgers will start. I’d play DAL

    @Wilsonian: Crabtree

@herschel: I’d go for it. He’s on the practice field. He might not play this week and then they have a bye. Should be good after that.

  40. emceeperiod says:
    (link)

@Doc and @anyone who has good advice:

Here is a good dilemma to have, but a difficult one. I’m not a big fan of people posting their whole teams on these boards…but I’m gonna do it just this one time. 1PPR

    Q: Cutler
    RB1: LeSean McCoy
    RB 2: J.C.
    WR 1: Reggie Wayne
    WR 2: Roddy White
    WR 3: Micheal Crabtree
    TE: Celek
    Flex: Bradshaw

    BN: Amendola
    BN: Felix Jones
    BN: Ryan Torain
    BN: Mike Williams (TB)

Alright, there’s a guy in my league looking for an RB. Since Felix is now starting and getting 15-20 carries a game, do I try to flip him for like a Brandon Lloyd? Or do I flip LeSean McCoy while he’s #1 in PPR for like Andre Johnson? Then I’d start Felix, have Torain as my backup. But in that scenario I’d be benching Amendola, Williams, and Crabtree each week…

I guess one specific question is: Is the upgrade from Amendola or Crabtree to Andre Johnson going to outweigh the McCoy to Felix downgrade? The games Vick played with McCoy he had way less receptions than he does with Kolb, so you think I’d be selling high on McCoy? Is one good week with Felix enough to give me the confidence to dish McCoy?

I guess I just hate leaving talent on my bench and would like to upgrade at other positions. Felix getting over 100yds a week and Crabtree doing the same, sitting on my bench, makes me want to package them and upgrade my starters. Anyway, any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.

  41. stumanji says:
    (link)

Is Pierre Thomas good return for Orton or should I aim higher?

  42. Occh says:
    (link)

@emcee period, don’t do he trade, you don’t even need a wr. Crabtree is going to be a top 15 receiver the rest of the year. You really have nothing to gain! as for Vjackson, i wouldn’t be surprised if he makes a underwhelming affect when he returns, rivers is destroying as it is, and his chemistry with floyd is improving week by week. Vjacks might be a thing of the past

  43. G.O.B. says:
    (link)

Non-PPR league – I have gotten a couple trade offers that I would like to get your opinion on.

Ahmad Bradshaw/Moreno for Ronnie Brown/Big Ben

    Bradshaw/Malcolm Floyd for Brees

I am trying to upgrade at QB. I am pretty inclined to take the deal for Brees, especially now that Jackson is oming back. I still would have AP/Foster/Moreno/M Bush/Greene and Roddy/Megatron/Nicks/Crabtree, so this is a good trade right?

  44. Damion says:
    (link)

    Heres my starting lineup :

    qb-matt ryan
    rb-mccoy
    rb-rice
    wr-austin
    wr-floyd
    flex-bush
te- DO I START MOEAKI OR KELLAR???
DEF- DO I START SEATTLE OR SAN FRAN OR MINNESOTA
    K-Bryant

Ok. So who do I start between moeaki or kellar? seattle or san fran or minn?
at flex, do i start bush, lynch, or bowe?
at qb- do I start matt ryan, kolb, or vince young???

  45. Joe B says:
    (link)

@Doc: Is it cool to drop Dez Bryant to stash Vincent Jackson? I have these other WR currently… only 2 WR spots and a FLEX in PPR league.

    Larry Fitgerald
    Calvin Johnson
    Santana Moss
    Roy Williams

  46. sal says:

    moeaki or kellar?/

    Doc says:
    (link)

@emceeperiod: I really don’t like the McCoy to Felix downgrade. I’d like to believe they’ll continue to give him the ball (and he stays healthy), but I don’t know if they will.

  49. Doc

    Doc says:
    (link)

@stumanji: Tough, PT is still hurting and Orton is on fire, but it’s a decent return as long as you have a top QB. Go for it.

    @G.O.B.: Go for it.

    @Damion: Moeaki, SF, VY

@Joe B: Hmm. I like Dez a lot, but hes hurting again and Roy is playing well. Sounds kind of crazy, but I could see doing it.

  50. Damion says:

    @Damion: Bush

  52. sal says:

@Doc: would you trade turner for mendenhall straight up? what about dropping MB3 for james jones or mike thomas?

  53. Doc

    Doc says:
    (link)

@sal: I would lean to Mendy. I’d hold MB3 for now.

  54. Steph says:
    (link)

Ok- but what if my team has sucked horribly and I have been holding on to Vjacks for ever… and now I have the chance to trade him for Santana Moss. I really need some points from a wide receiver (any one will do!).

Should I do it or gamble on Jackson?

  55. Doc

    Doc says:
    (link)

@Steph: If you need to win now to get into the playoffs I’d do the trade.
