Commenter dskibin2 posted in the forums: “A friend of mine, who I believe to be a trusted source, has inside info that Sidney Rice underwent season ending hip surgery today in Colorado. Take it for what its worth, just trying to give a heads up before it hits ESPN.”  Then not too long after that, Judd Zulgad, a beat reporter for the Vikings writes on his Twitter account, “Just filed a story that Vikings WR Sidney Rice has been in Vail, Colo., in recent days to have his hip examined at the Steadman Clinic. It sounds as if there is a very good chance Rice will end up having surgery on his injured hip.”

A very interesting development and if you have already drafted Rice and there is a chance Berrian is available, grab him now.  This hurts Favre, but really boosts Harvin, Shiancoe, and Berrian.  It could give Adrian Peterson a little more work, but he’s already going #2 overall and I just don’t see any reason to push him above CJ at this point.

Zulag is saying the surgery could keep him out for half the season, so I wouldn’t just drop him yet.  The story is still in its infancy.  But thanks to dskibin2 for the heads up!

UPDATE — It is confirmed that Rice did have the surgery and should be out at least 8 games.

I was pretty worried about this guy before it came to light his hip was still bothering him, I didn’t think Favre was going to be able to duplicate his success again this year. I can now safely remove Rice from all my cheat-sheets for my upcoming drafts.

Ooof. I’m one of the lucky ones who drafted Rice. I’ve got some decent depth at RB, and I stuck Jonathan Stewart on the trading block. What level of WR should I be holding out for? Oh yeah, 10 team non PPR league.

Doc and Commenters: My 8 Team H2H Keeper draft is tomorrow night. I know it’s a small league, so we all should have good teams, but there’s about $400.00 riding on it, so I’m invested. We keep 2 and I’m keeping CJ and Reggie Wayne. Here are the rest of the teams:

Team 1. Greg Jennings, Joseph Addai
Team 2. Peyton Manning, Calvin Johnson
Team 3. Rashard Mendenhall, Antonio Gates
    Team 4. Aaron Rodgers, MJD
Team 5. Drew Brees, Steven Jackson
Team 6. Andre Johnson, Frank Gore
Team 7. Matt Schaub, Larry Fitzgerald

I’m the 8th team, and that’s our draft order, being that I won the league I have last pick in the first round and then first pick in the second round.

    Our rosters are: 1 QB, 3 WR, 2 RB, 1 TE, 1 W/R, 1 K, 1 Def, 2 D, 6 BN

It is a 0.5 PPR and we have bonuses of 3 points at 250 yards passing and 6 points at 335 yards passing, 3 points at 100 yards rushing and 6 points at 150 yards rushing, 2 points at 100 yards receiving and 4 points at 135 yards receiving. Passing TDs are 4, the rest are 6.

These are the available guys that I think could be targeted in the first and second rounds: Brady, Rivers, Romo, Turner, DeAngelo, Charles, McCoy, Roddy, Randy, Marshall, Miles, DeSean, Welker, Boldin, Dallas Clark, Vernon Davis.

Who would you target with my first two picks, and if you could, please rank those guys that I’ve listed? Thanks Doc, and commenters, I really appreciate the help.

@EmporersMonkey: Yeah, this does make it easier. Of course if he’s back for the second half he could have a lot of fantasy playoff value.

@Clyde Prompto: In non-ppr JStew has good value. I wouldn’t sell him short. I’d try for a top receiver or just below. Maybe Colston, Boldin, Crabtree type. But I could see at least making offers for even higher than that.

@Wilsonian: Roddy, Marshall, Turner, JC, Moss, Miles, DeAngelo, McCoy, Brady, Romo, DJax, Boldin, Welker, Clark, VD — You’ve got some great options there to go with a solid Wayne/CJ core. I would be happy with another elite receiver, then whatever RB is available, then going for a Cutler/Kolb.

  5. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

@Doc: awesome! Thanks for the reply, Doc. So your take on who to draft would be to leave the QBs for later and stick to the WRs and backs? I do have a place in my heart for Cutler, his last year in Denver won me this same league 2 years ago to begin my reign.

I am kind of assuming that Turner would be gone already. If Roddy was still there along with Marshall or Moss or Miles, would you go with two more WRs to complete the starting 3 with Wayne, or would you opt for Roddy and then JC, DeAngelo or McCoy?

    Thanks again!

Vikings season already spiraling out of control. That’s a shame. A real shame.

  7. Clyde Prompto says:

@Doc: Wow, you like JStew more than I do. Well, I like him, I just don’t like that he has to share carries with another stud. I’ve got MoJo, JStew, Forsett and M Bush at RB, and Rice, Jennings, Garcon, D Bryant and Aromashodu at WR. Would trading Stewart just leave me thin at RB and do more harm than good?

Just did a mock draft and ran into a scenario I’ve seen several times, still not quite sure how to play it. Picking #9:

    (1) Team Reiss – Chris Johnson RB
    (2) Team Gardner – Maurice Jones-Drew RB
    (3) Team Bob – Adrian Peterson RB
    (4) Team Styer – Ray Rice RB
    (5) Team Tobe – Frank Gore RB
    (6) Team Greenleaf – Aaron Rodgers QB
    (7) Team Papalilo – Michael Turner RB
    (8) Team Giumento – Drew Brees QB
** (9) Team Pepe – Andre Johnson WR
    (10) Team Haefke – Peyton Manning QB
    (11) Team mejia – Steven Jackson RB
    (12) Team bryant – Randy Moss WR

    Round: 2
    (13) Team bryant – Reggie Wayne WR
    (14) Team mejia – Rashard Mendenhall RB
    (15) Team Haefke – DeAngelo Williams RB

Who would YOU take at #16 there?

  9. Trevor says:

What do you think of this team. We drafted last night and it is an 18 team PPR league. Its pretty cool because it has an elimination format starting in week 9 where the bottom two teams are eliminated weeks 9-12 to get it down to a 10 team league. The interesting part is once a team is eliminated, it’s players will go on waivers besides its top 3 picks.

    QB: Matt Ryan
    RB: Steven Jackson, Ahmad Bradshaw
    WR: Greg Jennings, Anquan Boldin
    TE: Dustin Keller
    W/T: Johnny Knox
    W/R: Fred Jackson
    BN: matt Cassel
    BN: Derrick Ward
    BN: Louis Murphy
    BN: Jordy Nelson

Any thoughts on picking up the newly signed Javon Walker? I’d likely drop backups like Larry Johnson or Shockey maybe. Not sure if the Favre history upside offsets Walker’s recent inabilities to produce.

    Decent flier??

My draft is tonight and it is a keeper league with 0.5 PPR. My keepers are Calvin Johnson, LeSean McCoy, DeAngelo Williams and Miles Austin. I have the 4th pick, and the following players are currently available. How would you rank the following guys with the understanding that 3 of them will probably be gone before I draft…..

Jennings, Ryan Grant, Boldin, Mathews, Jahvid Best, Beanie Wells, Joseph Addai, Pierre Thomas, Steve Smith (CAR), Antonio Gates, J Stewart, Vernon Davis

  13. Doc

    Doc says:
    (link)

@Wilsonian: I could see stacking up on WR if the names are still there. It really depends on who is available at that point.

@Pepe Silvia: In non ppr it’s pretty tough. In PPR I’m going with Fitz/CJ/White. In non-ppr those guys are on my radar, but after getting AJ I’m leaning toward RB. I’m in the JC camp, but could see going Greene there, especially if I think there is the slim chance JC falls back to me.

@Trevor: Not bad for 18 teams. I guess I’d have to see the other teams to really gauge, but from what I can tell looks good. I would drop Ward for Huggins.

@Howbone: Are you looking for a mock or real league?

@Clyde Prompto: I’m also worried about him splitting time, but I’ve seen him go pretty high. Just depends on his perceived value which is all over the place.

@BAS: I don’t see him beating out Berrian or Harvin.

@Giacomo: Can you start 3 RBs?

  14. Howbone says:

Real league Doc, am game for any stakes.

  15. Pepe Silvia says:
    (link)

@Doc: thanks for the input. ftr, I went with Grant there but wasn’t crazy about it. maybe you’re right on going with Charles and the odds of him being there at #33 aren’t good, in fact I think that’s only happened for me once out of roughly 20-25 mock drafts.

  16. Giacomo says:
    (link)

@Doc: I can start either a RB or WR at my flex position. My 4 keepers that I mentioned will take up my 2 WR and 2 RB’s that I will start most weeks. Line-ups are

QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, Flex (WR or RB), TE, DST, K
    10 teams
4 keepers each in the rounds they were drafted

What do you think Doc? (Dynasty League)

Before the news broke, I moved Ward ($2), Berrian ($1), and Foster ($1) for ($2) Rice and ($1) Collie.

VJax ($9) and Rice ($2) hit the pine indefinitely at WR which leaves me Smith (NYG) ($2), Marshall ($9), Nicks ($3), Jac. Jones ($1), and Brit ($2).

My RBs are solid – CJ ($27), McCoy ($6), and Stewart ($5), but can I survive with the above WRs while VJax and Rice are out?

  18. Doc

    Doc says:
    (link)

@Giacomo: I would look at bolstering your RBs since you are stout at WR.

Grant, Wells, Mathews, Best, Thomas, Addai, Stewart

Mathews has a ton of upside, but still is unproven. Grant is the safest. Mathews has a lot of upside if he continues catching passes. I believe in Wells more than others do.

  19. Giacomo says:

@Doc: Thanks, I saw the article when you and that other guy were talking about Pierre and Beanie…. If I had to guess Grant is going to be gone, so it will be one of the other guys.

@Doc: Inaugural year of a 10 team ppr (1 pt) keeper league (keep 7), snake draft. I have the 9th pick and am considering meagatron as the 2nd pick of the 2nd round. Is this a good idea or am I ac’in all crazy. I plan on going WR/WR btw.
The content on the site is looking great– keep up the good work!

    Through 6 rounds in a 14-team non-PPR league from the #2

Adrian Peterson, Greg Jennings, Jamaal Charles, Dwayne Bowe, Vernon Davis, Kevin Kolb.

    Thoughts?

@Cole: Appreciate it. I really see no problem with that. Megatron is higher in keeper/dynasties and has looked great in preseason.

@sean: Looks good. I would have waited on TE, but VD will be strong.

what tier of WR’s does this put Harvin in with PPR?

i’m thinking Ward/Crabtree/Bowe. is that too high?

  24. Doc

    Doc says:
    (link)

@The Peoples Champ: He’s not as good a route runner as those guys so it will be harder to get him the ball as consistently, but he is explosive and they will do everything they can to get him the ball. I think he’s more in the Mike Sims-Walker camp.

I’m a razzball regular for baseball, but I fully plan on being a daily razzball football reader (and comment section contributor) this year.
I’m hoping you can put these WR’s in order of your preference- Kenny Britt, Jabar Gaffney, Mike Thomas, James Jones, Early Doucet. Also, pick one of these 2 RB’s- Steve Slaton or Kareem Huggins.

As of now, I’m leaning toward Gaffney being the highest ranked WR of that bunch, and Huggins getting the edge over Slaton.

  27. Doc

    Doc says:

@Ron Washington’s Stache: Gaffney is the safest right now. And Thomas just hurt his foot again so he’s got sme more leeway.

If it’s PPR I go with Slaton, but if not, I’d gamble n Huggins.

@Isles Guru: If you only need to start 2 you are solid. 3 is a little weaker unless it’s a PPR league and the I think you are ok. Hope for VJax to get traded though!

  28. Isles Guru says:
    (link)

Thanks, Doc. Yeah I only need to start 2 (and it is PPR) but you can play 3 WRs.

Who is more likely to play first: VJax and Sindey Rice?

  29. Doc

    Doc says:
    (link)

@Isles Guru: That is a good question! We know Rice will be out for 8-10 weeks and will be recovering from surgery. VJax may have gotten a wedgie from sitting on the couch, but he’s not hurt. But he could end up sitting out the whole year. My gut tells me VJax will play at some point. He may be riskier, but higher reward because he could play more.

    @Doc:

My three keepers are Rice @ rd10, RWhite @ rd 6 and VD @ rd 16.

My draft position is 5th, however I will essentially have the third and fifth pick of the draft as everyone else has keepers through the 1st and second rd. I was thinking about going RB/RB (mendy& jchar) over RB/WR with the group that wil be left. What do you think?

whats left: mendy, jchar, r.wayne, miles austin, brandon marshall, greg jennings.

league is QB, RB (RICE), RB,WR (R.White),WR,TE,K,D

Side note – should I just keep Brady @ pick 3 instead of VD and go RB @ pick 5?

  31. Doc

    Doc says:

@norton: I like Davis that late and I like the Mendy/Charles combo.
