We haven’t reached the end of the 2015 Fantasy Football Season yet, nay, we are still smack dab right in the middle of it, but I wanted to talk about some exciting new thing-a-ma-jigs that we’re working on that will be released this season and the next. And what falls under the umbrella of “thing-a-ma-jigs”? Well, technically nothing, since that idiom makes zero sense. But, after the jump, I’m going to go over some new tools, mini-games, and contests that we are working on, all to make your Fantasy Football life easier, more enjoyable, and a lot more successful.

New to Daily Fantasy Football? Try out this new free FanDuel’s contest, where half the league is guaranteed to win. (Played on FanDuel before? You can build a team for $5 for a chance of $100,000, part of a one million dollar prize pool!)

  • I’m happy to announce that before the season ends, we’ll be releasing the beta of our new “Razzball Start ‘Em and Sit ‘Em Tool” that will allow you to select two different players and then the tool will let you know which one you should start over the other, all with the press of a button. These results will be based on our Razzball rankings, and the tool will update any time those rankings are updated. A simple, easy way to get the answers you need, especially if you’re in a time crunch.
  • Obviously, Daily Fantasy has taken hold of the entire sports market. Whether that’s good or bad, well, that discussion is above my pay grade. All I know is, I play a little bit, and it’s pretty fun. Sure, there is certainly a level of saturation that everyone has noticed (and chided), so we’ve tried to implement Daily Fantasy in the least abrasive way possible. We don’t have any pop-ups, annoying ads on our front page, and our DFS content is focused on just one post per week, yet we are still have to provide access to contests every single day (as you can see from above) for those of you who are interested. However, we do understand that this mode of fantasy sports isn’t for everyone. So starting this week, we’ll be starting Razzball-only contests, where you, the reader, will be able to spend just $5.00 and take on Razzball writers (myself included and MY money on the line) for a prize pool. We’ll be using FanDuels to host these “Weekly Razzball Money Contests“, but instead of going against many thousands of people, you’ll be going against myself and your favorite writers and your fellow readers, no one else. The leagues will start with a $5.00 buy-in and and the 12 highest scoring teams will win part of the prizepool, with the top prize of $60.00 going to the winner. Join here!
  • Next season, we’ll be launching a new mini-game that you may be familiar with: “NFL Razzball Pick ‘Em“. The idea is simple, we’ll be setting this up on-site and you’ll be able to pick, each week, which NFL team will win and whoever has the most correct predictions at the end of the season will win some prizes. We’ll be running this as a complimentary contest along with our popular Razzball Commenter Leagues, and this is a completely free contest.
  • And one of my favorite tools that we are working on, (the beta should be ready for next season), will be our “Razzball Lineup Optimizer“. In the mold of the “Start ‘Em and Sit ‘Em Tool”, this tool will analyze your entire roster and produce a starting lineup that will offer your best chance to win. Best part is, we’ll be implementing this for both regular Fantasy Football and Daily Fantasy.
  • Last but not least, all these tools will be free to use. There will be no pay-wall, and all of you will be able to access these new tools any time you’d like!

Now comes the most important part, with all these new projects set to be released over the next year, we’re always looking to provide helpful analysis while making fun of your mom. And you guys are going to be a huge part in making these tools better just simply by using them and giving us feedback. Thank you for that. But maybe there’s something else that you, as readers and Fantasy Football players, would like to see here on the site? Let us know if there’s a tool, a subject, or any idea that you might have that would make your Razzball stay more enjoyable…

“We don’t have any pop-ups, annoying ads on our front page…” Thank you – Razzball is so much more a pleasure to read than most of these other sites.

    • What's a Drexl? says:
      (link)

@Bill: i’ve never seen those. Of course i have my own nice tools on this here belt
” Hey, that’s just an extension cord”
      ME: so what

That start or sit tool (just like fantasy pros) will clean up about 70% of the questions. Nice.

      • Jay

        Jay says:
        (link)

@What’s a Drexl?: I still love questions, but I do want something there for those who need a quick answer or want play with their roster.

        • What's a Drexl? says:
          (link)

@Jay: i didn’t mean that you are intending to dodge questions, but this will save time for all involved in some cases, and esp in last minute cases. Good all around.

          • Jay

            Jay says:
            (link)

@What’s a Drexl?: Oh yeah, definitely didn’t take it that way. I just don’t want anyone to feel discouraged from reaching out.

@Bill: thanks! It’s a big deal to us.

  2. Zandy says:
    (link)

Jay – so saving my waiver 1 worked out!
Now I need some roster guidance Yet again…
2 Wr 2 Rb 1 te 1 flex Std scoring
    Julio demaryius Hilton ARob Jbrown
Ivory Gore Dion Charcandrick Jstew mJones bilal Christine
    Delanie
    Rivers

The team is coming along nicely but idk where to look to improve
Do I want to condense RBs further? Do I want to upgrade Hilton? Do I need to upgrade Delanie?
How would you optimize this team from here? Thanks man

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Zandy: i like your depth right now, hold for two weeks and let’s talk then.

      • Zandy says:
        (link)

@Jay: sounds good! Would you send Jstew and Delanie for kelce? What about Charcandrick for kelce?

        • Jay

          Jay says:
          (link)

          @Zandy: yes on both.

          • Zandy says:
            (link)

@Jay: thanks. Assume delanie and Christine is also a yes then

            • Jay

              Jay says:
              (link)

              @Zandy: totally.

              • Zandy says:
                (link)

@Jay: btw it goes without saying how much I love This site! I think all these ideas are great!! Love a trade chart so I can bug you less haha

                • Jay

                  Jay says:
                  (link)

@Zandy: Naw, bug me whenever! And thanks!

  3. Zandy says:
    (link)

Also as a Charcandrick owner, what’s his value currently? Mid range RB2? Is there upside or mostly downside from committee? Would you try to move him before this week or pray for a big game and sell? I just worry 12 carries for 45 yards and knile gets 8 carries for 30 yards and then Charcandrick has no trade value…

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Zandy: i think that’s correct. Probably closer to a rb3 until we see his usage. We’ll know a lot more after this Sunday.

  4. Nick says:
    (link)

Hey Jay, look forward to seeing your new thing-a-ma-jigs, good luck!

    For defense this week should I roll out Baltimore @ SF or drop em for one of these week 6 waiver wire options;

    Tenn v. Miami
Bengals @ Buffalo (could be good with backup QB in)
    Vikings v, KC
    Carolina @ Seattle

Than with Taylor injured (probably wont be able to go week 7 to fill in for Peyton Mannings bye) do you drop him for a QB to play over Peyton in week 6 &/or week 7? I’m thinking with just Cutler, Bortles, Flacco, Kaepernick, Bridgewater, Smith, Fitzy available in 10-teamer, I’ll have to roll with Peyton this week & than decide on a fill-in QB next week…or do you like one of those guys for week 6 or to grab now for week 7 use?

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Nick: thanks! Keep the Ravens and find a QB next week.

  5. Nick says:
    (link)

Atlanta (v. NO) is also available as my opponent just dropped them for Green Bay…could ATL be a better streamer defense this week over my 4 mentioned waiver options above or Ravens who I own now?

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Nick: naw, still loke the Ravens. Double check my rankings tomorrow thougj.

  6. jcg says:
    (link)

Congrats! Big things in the works!

12 team PPR Which two would you rather roster for rest of the season?

    Agholor, DGB, Diggs, DeVante P

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

      @jcg: thanks! Leaning Agholor there.

    • goodfold2 says:
      (link)

      @jcg: devante 2nd.

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@jcg: Ah, missed that you needed two. Goldy is right, DeVante as the second.

  7. Money Mike says:
    (link)

Mornin Jay, Razzball just keeps getting better and better!
Quick trade question, I was offered Abdullah for my Charles Clay. I also have Greg Olsen and Delanie Walker for TEs. Any thoughts on the trade and on Abdullahs outlook for ROS?

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Money Mike: thanks! Yeah, take Ameer. Strong flex/rb3 option.

  8. ohwhattodo says:

playing in a keeper league and im 3-2, trying to buy low maybe catch some lightening in a bottle..

would you deal away a 8th round james jones, 13th round willie snead, and 6th round sammy watkins for 3rd round mike evans and 6th rouund abdullah?

the player can be kept for one round higher, and im dealing away the 3 wr’s but have better keeper options now with devonta breaking out i’m not too worried, trying to win this year.

    thank you

  9. pickleballl says:
    (link)

my team is struggling.. and i need a replacement for latavius this week (bye week). would you deal latavius murray, ronnie hillman, andrew luck for lamar miller, willie snead, matt ryan?

what if the deal was murray, luck, bengals D for miller, snead, ryan?

one more: latavius murray, eddie lacy for frank gore, lamar miller, brandon marshall…

i know i’m likely giving up the best player in the deal (luck/latavius) but i’m 1-4 and need to make some bold moves

    • pickleballl says:
      (link)

@pickleballl: im sorry i thought of another possibility

      latavius/lacy for forsett/gore/snead

      or

      latavius/lacy/luck for forsett/gore/alshon jeffery/matt ryan

      • Jay

        Jay says:
        (link)

@pickleballl: i know it sucks to go 1-4, but I don’t like any of these deals for you. I’d at least try to sell higher on Lacy.

  10. freemartavis says:
    (link)

hey i put this in tehol’s thread too but wanted one more opinion.

    guy is offering:

melvin gordon for willie snead and sammy watkins… his current wr2 is andre johnson so hes looking for an upgrade.

also he sent over latavius for lamar miller straight up… thoughts?

    thank you

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@freemartavis: i like both those deals for you.

  11. Big w says:
    (link)

    Morning Jay,

I have been offered megatron and hyde for my forte and no moncreif…

My current receivers are d thomas, a Robinson, moncreif and hurns… My current backs are forte, Ingram…. What do you think?

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

      @Big w: i would hold there.

  12. Fella says:
    (link)

Who to start in my flex spot this week (.5 PPR): Rishard Matthews, Tamme, Jamison Crowder, CJ Spiller, David Johnson, Buck Allen?

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Fella: leaning Spiller there, but double check my rankings tomorrow.

  13. Gray's Sports Almanac says:
    (link)

Sup Jay, hey totally off topic, but is Warner going to hit another article on Razzball or did she quit it?

    • FrankGrimes says:
      (link)

      @Gray’s Sports Almanac:
I see what you did there
Maybe it was the abuse for saying drop Hyde
Turns out she was kinda right lmao

      • Gray's Sports Almanac says:
        (link)

GRIMEY! Yeah, that sorta got out of control. I like her analysis though, she and Jay were instrumental in me winning my league last year, so I would be bummed if she walked away….

        • Jay

          Jay says:
          (link)

@FrankGrimes: @Gray’s Sports Almanac: Thanks! And yeah, she’s tough. I prefer contrarian views a lot on this site, as I can get myopic with my opinion sometimes, so I’m actually happy when my writers go against the grain a bit.

    • Clyde Prompto says:
      (link)

@Gray’s Sports Almanac: I’m in her RCL and I asked her the same thing. She said she’ll be back in a week or two.

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Gray’s Sports Almanac: Yeah, she went on vacation in real life and I spoke to her just yesterday. She’ll be back to writing either this upcoming week or the next!

  14. Clint says:
    (link)

I love the news, Jay. Nice to see Razzball ahead of the curve again and working on taking over the fantasy football world as much as they have in baseball. I’m already paying for that side of the site so I’ll gladly pony up for football as well when the time comes, as I’m sure it eventually will.

If I had one request it would be one I’m not sure is even feasible for fantasy football. Rudy’s tools on the baseball side have harnessed the metrics of prediction so incredibly well for hot streaks, seeing tools translate from rooks to taking over starter roles, to Grey seeing the breakouts themselves as they happen. I’ve always wished football had some similar set of peripherals that could be snatched & used as readily.

Sidebar: I’ve been at this since 2004 and, no offense to the site, but I’ve used so many publications (anybody remember the annual magazine raid at stores in July?), read blogs, listened to countless podcasts, looked at strength of schedule tools/contract year guys etc and still not won a title yet mostly due to it all coming down to the luck of studs performing or underperforming in those critical playoff weeks. I may be in the minority but when you lose a title game with A-Rod, Le’Veon, Julio, and Calvin on your team in Week 16, I’m not sure there’s much else to conclude but fantasy football includes a TON of luck. Especially when a loss happens at the hands of guys that have never done this before in their first year with barely 1 stud to their teams. I mean, if you lose to the guy that picks up Ron Dayne & his 3 TD’s & nearly 300yds rushing for the playoffs after you led the league in points, record, and top positional guys, it just doesn’t seem right to me.

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Clint: Thanks! I’ve very exciting on some of the things we’ve been working on.

And it’s a great point to bring up. Rudy and I have talk about projections, but right now, the small sample size (just a 16 game season, 12-14 of which is usually the life of a fantasy season) is something that really hurts the process. We are thinking about ways around this problem, so stay tuned!

All that totally ties into your last point there. To be honest, I think, at the very least, championships in fantasy football should be two weeks of games, to sort of filter out all that loud noise.

  15. IV says:
    (link)

Excited is the word that comes to mind after reading this post. One of the best parts of the baseball side of Razzball is the tools available to us readers. Really looking forward to these Jay!

Possibly idea for a new tool: A trade value table that can be used to check if trades are fair. It could be based on ROS rankings or some kind of magic. You select the type of league (standard, .5, or 1 PPR) and add players on both sides to see if it is fairish. Not sure if this is possible, but definitely something to look into.

That being said, I received the following trade off in a 16 Team .5 PPR redraft.

Give Ivory and Moncrief, Get Dez and any one of the following: Alfred Morris, Marvin Jones, DJax, C West.

    My Roster for reference:
    QB: Bradford
    RB: Forte
    WR: Fitz
    TE: R Rodgers
    WR/TE: Cooks
    WR/RB/TE: Ivory
    BN: Woodhead, Moncrief, Riddick
    K: Tucker
    D/ST: Carolina

Thoughts on the trade and post injured Dez?

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@IV: Thanks! And I love that trade table idea. We could probably tie that into my rest of season rankings… very interesting. I’m certainly going to consider this once we release the beta start/sit tool.

The trade is okay, not super crazy about it, but it’s a clear upgrade come playoff time. I’d probably go for West as added depth.

  16. JBagKY says:
    (link)

1/2 PPR league. I have Woodhead and Freeman as my starting RB (only start 2) with CJ Anderson and Matt Jones on my bench. Would you drop either or both of my bench options for any of these on the waiver wire: Lamar Miller, Duke Johnson, Thomas Rawls, Theo Riddick, Rashard Jennings, CJ Spiller. And in what order? Thanks!

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@JBagKY: I might go Spiller for Jones in this format. Tough choice here. Honestly, I just might hold for now.

  17. Tone DEF says:
    (link)

Is GreenBay defense one to keep and play most weeks, Or just a streamer?

    • FrankGrimes says:
      (link)

      @Tone DEF:
      They have been so good.
If you can keep them I would.

      • Tone DEF says:
        (link)

        @FrankGrimes: cool thanks Grimes!

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Tone DEF: Yeah, with Grimey, keep em for now.

  18. FrankGrimes says:

Is tehol going to be in these contests?
    Cha Ching $$$
Next year RCL 6-8 writers vs

Winner spends a weekend in the great
    Northwest with Tehol!

    • Gray's Sports Almanac says:
      (link)

The only catch to the “prize” is that the winner also has to wear a Dominic Brown mask…

    • Jay

      Jay says:

@FrankGrimes: I think he’s trying to figure out how to get around living in Washington. Apparently it’s restricted there.

@Jay: maybe the poker interests have taken one back up there hehehe.

  19. WillisReid says:

The content and layout here is already far better than anything I’ve found. The fact that the articles are usually dripping with humor is a plus.

My only fear us the rest of my league will catch on.

    Great work.

    • WillisReid says:
      (link)

Bortles with a wonky shoulder over Mariota?

        Also…..lol

Have you guys ever considered using Disqus for the comment section? It’s excellent if you prioritize comments. Direct reply with email notification ect.

  20. Chicken Dinner says:
    (link)

Jay! How goes it my man? Here’s something I’ve suggested before. Maybe it already exists already and I’m completely oblivious. It would be nice if there was a previous comments link. Sometimes I forget which blog I posted on or just have a hard time sifting through all of them. What say you, Rudy, Grey?

  21. SwaggerJackers says:
    (link)

    Faster answers to commenter questions.

Grey has spoiled us on the baseball side by answering questions about 5 minutes after we post them.

On this side of the site, sometime we have to wait hours or days which sucks on game days.

The start/sit tool will help but that personal response is what sets Razz apart from all the other sites.

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@SwaggerJackers: I read you loud and clear. You should actually see Grey’s setup. He literally has a PC, laptop, iPad and phone in front of him at all times.

  22. Joe says:
    (link)

I’m going to brazenly double dip!

    1. Would you rather use a roster spot on Knile Davis, Theo Riddick, or to stash Christine Michael?

    2. Would you trade Jordan Matthews for Charles Sims in a 10-team PPR?

We play QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, RB/WR (i.e. flex), TE in a 10-team PPR league. I’m currently 4-1. My team is:

    QB – Mariota, Big Ben
RB – CJA, Abdullah, Lewis, CJ2K, Davis
WR – Julio, Fitz, Matthews, Landry, A-Rob
    TE – Gronk

    • Joe says:
      (link)

      @Joe:

PS If you think I should hold on to Knile Davis, should I drop Abdullah for Christine?

      • Jay

        Jay says:
        (link)

@Joe: Naw, I’d rather hold on Ameer there. Hold Davis for one more week.

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Joe: Michael at this moment. I’d want Matthews there.

  23. Scott says:

    PPR – ROS – K. Williams or A. Ellington??

    Thanks

    • Jay

      Jay says:

@J Dubber: Tough one, I’d say Williams, but very slight lead there.

  25. Chicken Dinner says:
    (link)

    Trade question for you. PPR

    Dalton/Julio/Spiller for AJGreen/L Murray/Agholor

    My QB would be Bradford

  26. What's a Drexl? says:
    (link)

andrews or bradshaw or j.allen (had to dump sankey this morning for short term bye week DE have andrews now) for RB #5 in PPR with start 2 RB a flex. have all of stewart/vereen/duke johnson/forsett/andrews.

      • What's a Drexl? says:
        (link)

@Jay: who’s 2nd in that group. i have similar choice in a different league, but with andrews waivered by somebody else ahead of me.

  27. Jerry says:
    (link)

Jay, do you like Tavon Austin or Andre Johnson for ros? Thanks!

    • Jay

      @Jerry: Austin slightly.

  28. matthew says:

Should I hold onto St. Louis defense for the bye week? Or just drop them

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@matthew: depends what kind of bind it puts you in, but I like them.

      • matthew says:
        (link)

@Jay: well here’s my team: 2 QB. Standard scoring.
        QB: tannehill, Brady
RB: Cj Anderson, gio Bernard, Dion Lewis, Hyde
WR: rishard Matthews, hurns, Snead, ty Hilton, desean Jackson, Sammy Watkins.
Who can I drop out of these to pick up a defense ?

        • Jay

          Jay says:
          (link)

@matthew: yeah, I think you have to drop them unfortunately.

  29. goodfold2 says:
    (link)

it appears you’ll be fixing Fanduel’s 2nd biggest problem with those smaller tourneys, even having smaller tourney’s as they don’t have that option normally. Their biggest problem of course is that unlike in Draftkings you can’t sub out guys within anything resembling a reasonable amount of time. Odd that the marketplace allows one company to be that much better than the other in this regard (the bigger problem, not the tourney size thing), i figured when these two sites came up that the one would have to get in line with common sense to compete. It’s like if there were two total types of crackers at the store (with a large demand for crackers assumed), one with anti-poison on the box in the event of poisoned crackers (let’s assume there’s a 10% chance of crackers being poisoned for both brands) and the other without. You’d think the one with the anti-poison would sell many many more crackers.

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@goodfold2: Agreed. I actually prefer these smaller contests.

@Jay: so if you know 60 is going to the winner and top 12 will make something Fanduel could get screwed over pretty hard if few join (by “screwed over pretty hard” this is in comparison to their usual 10% or more, i don’t weep for anybody that sets something up that costs very little after it’s set up and they just sit and watch the 10% add up, exactly like a casino, hmmm there’s some Marxian banging on my door all of a sudden, with pizza so….), and very few could go paid (but quite a bit more of course) if there are a LOT of people. Now that i think about it, Fanduel has no chance of being screwed over, as they’ll just adjust the payouts of the 2nd-12th place to get their 10-12% of course.

@goodfold2: Totally. And it beats going against like 30k people, a lot of investors and bots playing the odds. This personal contest is just so much more legit.

          • goodfold2 says:
            (link)

@Jay: oh yeah, the chances of a normal person (like the so called ones in those commercials who have sucked in i’d love to hear what total % of the money) actually winning one of those with the bots and people who can afford like 100 entries isn’t a nice number.

Saddest part, is THIS is why NFL had poker outlawed, we just couldn’t see it back those years ago just how big a deal that was to get enough people paid to make that happen. This is EXACTLY the market for what used to be poker online players. It’s more than that, but it’s them too. I understood it in theory as to why they did that, but didn’t see the payout directly.

@goodfold2: Totally. This time might be different than poker, as the ownership stakes in these companies are astounding. TV Networks, the NFL, it’s crazy.

              • goodfold2 says:
                (link)

@Jay: all those pooling money and political interests is what got poker illegalized and why it’s not legal in so many places even now. Those millionaire poker interests are completely dwarfed by these billion dollar interests of the pro sports leagues, NFL in particular. Years ago i wondered just why they would pay to do that, except the obvious, if somebody is playing online poker 3 hours a day he’s not watching as much football of course. But with this daily fantasy now i really see the 7-8 year plan come across. So much disposable income that used to go into online poker was just waiting to go to something else similar, and here we are.

Competitively it’s worse since like you said, one person can LEGALLY have 100’s of buy ins to these things, in poker if that was found out it was illegal to play multi accounts (same person playing more than once) in same tourney (it occurred occasionally, but was caught often, and nowhere near the level of investors buying in dozens of times to 30K entry daily fantasy tourneys)

@Jay: i wonder what methods they have in the backrooms to take interest/money from other bigger U.S. sports.

@goodfold2: “bigger u.s. sports” don’t exist, i meant other sports that are big in the u.s.

    Great News!

If Tyrod is out, should I pick up Fitzpatrick and start him vs Washington or go with Bridgewater vs KC 2QB league my other QB is Brady so just need a safe floor.

Also, better PPR flex option this week – Lamar Miller @TEN or Charcandrick West @MIN?

    Thanks Jay

Looking for trade advice… 10 Team standard scoring league with 2 Flex spots.
    QB Ryan
    RB AP, Lynch,
    WR Megatron, Jeffrey, Garcon
    Flex Devonta, Latavious
    TE Clay
    Bench Lachandrick, Crabtree

Have been offered AJ Green and Martellus Bennett for Devonta and Clay.

I’ve got so much depth at RB especially with picking up Lachandrick who would be on my bench. I feel weak at WR but in reality I should be ok with Jeffrey back.

Scared to trade Devonta since he has been absolutely murdering it! Am I selling high buying low on AJ? Your thoughts?

      Jay says:

@Jim: It’s tough, but I’d actually hold. Normally, I’d say take the deal, but the fact that it’s standard, and Lynch has been hampered, I think you need that RB depth.
