If you missed it this past weekend, we introduced a brand new tool called: The Pigskinator (along with a brand new DFSBot). If it sounds familiar, I blame Arnold Schwarzenegger (aka, the spellcheck destroyer). Also, it’s because this tool is based on the very successful and highly used Hitter-tron and Stream-o-Nator over on our Baseball site. The foundation of these tools, which can be found in our menu above, was based on either dark wizardry or black magic, depending on what level sorcerer Rudy is. I’m assuming he’s a level 96 dark mage, but I could be mistaken from how powerful his +9 to magic missile amulet is. I have no idea where this joke is going, but I’m sure the nerds loved it. Regardless, I’d like to kinda go over how I used the tools this past weekend, and how they might help you in a real sense. Other than a fake sense, which doesn’t seem helpful at all…

So first, here’s where you can have quick access to the tools so you can follow along with me…

Pigskinonator

If you click on one of those positions, any position is fine, you immediately go to a page with a complete breakdown of the upcoming week’s game and it’s projections. Let’s take Running Backs for example…

rbnator

The first thing you’ll notice is that you can sort this list about anyway you want. But don’t take those empty boxes for granted, they provide even more user control. Looking for a specific player? Start typing in his name in the “Name” field.

rbwood

Yeah, I was searching for Wood. What of it! But as you can see, as you type the name, all corresponding matches will narrow down. If you typed Woodhead, only Danny would show. But if you just type Wood, any name related would show up. Including your mom. And this works with all the other fields.

Say you want to look at players who are only slated for the early games. Go to the “Hour” field and type in the corresponding hour, which would be “1” (for 1:00 PM EDT). How about players that have been projected to have a certain YDS/Rush threshold? Let’s say you want to see players who are projected for 4+ YDS/Rush in their upcoming game… simply go to that field and type in “4.” (without the quotation marks). That will display results of all players that are projected for 4-5 YDS/Rush. And this works for all the fields. Let’s say you are looking for fantasy point totals for that week. Same thing! You want to find a running back that’s projected for 15 points in PPR leagues? Just type in “15.” (the decimal point is important) in the appropriate field, and bam, you’ll get your list. Really cool stuff.

And it’s fair to ask, if this system is so dependent on out week-by-week projections, where do these projections actually come from? Well, here’s the process: Razzball starts with a massive file of play-by-play NFL data (over 10 years worth). We then use the Vegas over/under and spreads as the foundation for the team projections, which are some of the most accurate in the industry. And then, to add another layer, we use past game data for players to estimate both their opportunities (e.g., snaps, rushes, targets) and skills as measured by ratios (yards per rush/reception, completions per target). Biasing factors (e.g., domes, weather, home/road) are tested, and then adjust the data to be as ‘neutral’ as possible. And then we regress player data to league-average for the position to deal with the inherent sample size issues. And last, we adjust the player data to fit the team projection – e.g., if I’m projecting 42 pass plays for Pittsburgh, I need to make sure the sum of all receiver targets is 42. This is pretty close the same methodology we use with our baseball tools, which have been one of the most accurate in the industry.

And now, if you enjoy Daily Fantasy Football…

DFSBot

Let’s, for sampling purposes, randomly select FanDuel, and then the Quarterback position.

rbqb

Obviously, this screen is a bit different. In terms of Daily Fantasy, how you use this tool to your benefit is entirely up to you! But there is a lot of data here that can give you the upper hand. First and foremost, like the Pigskinator, easily being able to pinpoint the data you want, and sorting through it is key. I would recommend this, in terms of Daily Fantasy, you want value, and you want points. Usually in the same package. In that case, I would sort by $/PT and go from there.

There is a lot more coming in terms of these tools, including new ways to interact with them, and also further calibration. And we want your input! What are you looking for? How are you using them? Let us know! These tools will be in a test period for a month, and we look forward looking at the data and how all of you use these new tools…

Jay I’m really excited about this tool for the Football side of Razzball. I have been a subscriber for SON the last two years and use it religiously for my baseball leagues. It’s lead me to back to back championships there so I really like Rudy’s work.

Just wondering if your staff can extend the first year experience to your current SON subscribers. I read that this is only free for the first 4 weeks of Fantasy Football season. Thank you.

    • Jay

@Jedimasters: Glad to hear it, and I’m excited too! This is a definitely something Grey, myself, and Rudy should discuss. Thanks for bringing it up.

    • @Jedimasters: Thanks for your SON loyalty and kind words! We’ve invested a lot into the NFL tools so we can’t just offer it free for the full year. We felt 4 weeks would be enough time to work through any early quirks and give everyone a chance to play with the tools. We’ll likely be sending a discount code to baseball subscribers though as a reward.

        @Rudy Gamble:

That’s fantastic thanks for the update fellas.

Remind me never to take your partners advice anymore lol. I got Watkins all over the place even though I knew Watkins wasn’t a very tough guy I took a chance based on your partners love for him. I even stacked him twice with Tyrod I’m in big trouble for doing that. Jay honestly I would fire him now without notice lol its all good but for now on I’m lis tending to you only.

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

      @Brian: Wait, who’s my partner?

      • Brian says:
        (link)

        Tehol

        • Jay

          Jay says:
          (link)

@Brian: Haha, yeah, he hits on a lot of things, but his love for the Bills is questionable. To be fair, Watkins has an injury he’s trying to work through at the moment. I’d try to stay the course here.

in a 2 QB PPR 12 team dynasty i lose allen, again, and thank god this is my ONLY allen league this year. i got lucky in another dynasty to get evans in the 2nd round or i just might’ve had allen. 2 flexes too.
    QB rodgers/rodfather/osweiler/gabbert
    RB (start 2) forte/mathews/woodhead/ingram/ivory/forsett
    WR (start 3) jordy/edleman/d-jax/treadwell (1 open spot)
    TE (start 1) ertz/green julius
IR allen (2 spots, they’ll fill up soon i’m sure)
first off i need another WR RIGHT AWAY. who’s best out of these (everyday FAAB waivers): agholor/royal/lafell/roberts/cruz/pryor/patton/doctson/coates/kearse/rodgers/stills/crowder

    2. now i might be better off dropping forsett for another WR, since i’ll have only 5 and my best just left for ROS? (at least till i need a bye week D or IDP)

    • What's A Drexl? says:
      (link)

@What’s A Drexl?: thank jeebus i have woodhead, he’ll never be a bench again i’m sure with allen out.

      • What's A Drexl? says:
        (link)

@What’s A Drexl?: SHIT, i have allen in another league too, i forgot (we keep 6 so he was of course a keeper there too, also have JORDY there, shaping up to be another massively injured season in these 2 leagues)

        • Jay

          Jay says:
          (link)

@What’s A Drexl?: Yeah, I could see Woodhead being relied upon heavily now.

        • What's A Drexl? says:
          (link)

@What’s A Drexl?: inman out there too. but he’s more helpful in 20 teamers.

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@What’s A Drexl?: Hmm, I’m kind of intrigued by Pryor. But I don’t think you need to drop Forsett yet. I’d hol there.

      • What's A Drexl? says:
        (link)

@Jay: allen will be IRable so i’ll add one of those WR for losing nothing (and need to)

        • What's A Drexl? says:
          (link)

@What’s A Drexl?: rodgers looking good (and lucky)

        • Jay

          Jay says:
          (link)

@What’s A Drexl?: Yeah, hold on Forsett, but pick up Pryor for that spot I think.

  4. Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
    (link)

that same huge roster 20 teamer, i FORGOT to get up in time to drop c.thompson and grab a kicker (i would’ve grabbed the JAX guy, and he got 15 points in this league). PPR
    QB cousins/goff
RB (start one, rushing yards 1 pt per only 5 yards) AP/blount/mckinnon/sims/c.thompson
WR (start 2, but only 1 pt per 15 yards caught) benjamin/d-jax/garcon/agholor/doctson/aiken
    TE (start 1) reed/ASJ
    K parkey (on no team)
    1 flex
    LB e.kendricks/david/kwon A (the next radiohead album)/ anthony/cravens
S bucannon/parker/k.joseph (a top 2 S rookie this year, kinda like this year’s l.collins on projections wise eventually)
    CB hall/breeland
    DT baker/a.donald
    DE ealy/campbell/c.heyward

i’m still yahoo projected to win by 13 or so, but have a lot of players going now and donald later. probably hurt myself from getting worried about heyward playing earlier in week and played ealy, who did almost nothing (took a TD away from v.green though), so i’ll be lucky to win with no kicker for this week (had hoped mckinnon sat out and i could’ve added a kicker without dropping anyone by IR’ing him). am STILL projected to score most points this week (my LB’s went apeshit and this league scores very heavy with IDP’s). earlier the drop was c.thompson, but now that i have benjamin (and agholor was actually used) might it be aiken (barely used at all)?

    • Jay

      Jay says:
      (link)

@Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow: Aiken was a sleeper for a lot of people. I’d hold on him… I don’t know, when do you get the projections for the upcoming week? I hate to punt a position, but it did work this week apparently…

      • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
        (link)

@Jay: it was on accident. somebody (the NYG owner too) dropped vereen for that OAK backup that had ONE good run, but my 16th waiver won’t net vereen anyway. aiken effectively made me a pretty good overall offense last year (when it wouldn’t have been had i had to start garcon every week), but now with perriman/smith back he ain’t looking good.

        is reed hurt here?

        • Jay

          Jay says:
          (link)

@Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow: Yeah, it’s a fair point. I still like him in a league like this, but I think I agree, in this format, he might be the first one to go.

          • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
            (link)

@Jay: yeah, i mean did he come out just now on that drive.

            • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
              (link)

@Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow: oh snap, the comish fixed (without me, the assistant comish, prompting him, which i had before and have on other scoring issues, except the crazy IDP point,s he wants those big, which is fine for my roster anyway) the 5 yards per point rushing and 15 per on catching to the normal 10 and 10 per point. i’m only back 25 points (and we get points for all sorts of stuff, 1st downs, completions (but -2 for incompletions), d-jax could go over 100 (3 pt bonus), donald will eat some humans tonight too and get at least 14 points (hell maybe over 35 like kendricks and kwon A)

              • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
                (link)

@Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow: thompson apparently IS being used as the backup, not piss man r.kelley or that other guy.

                • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
                  (link)

@Jay: at this point reed’s short term health is bigger issue, up to like 92% (by yahoo) fav.

                  • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
                    (link)

@Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow: WAS has appeared to go back to 2014 and earlier levels.

                    • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
                      (link)

@Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow: WOW, that is NEVER a catch (the harrison “pick”) when a game matters in the NFL. lost 5 points there.

  5. Razzball lead me to glory says:

Loved the baseball tools and was just looking through the site earlier this week to see if you covered football in a similar aspect. I’m feeling blessed with this announcement. Any chance of adding an optimizer to the DFS Bot?

    • @Razzball lead me to glory: Working with LineupLab. Aiming for sometime this week for the optimizer (that won’t be free though…just discounted). Our projections are also in DraftCrunch’s optimizer.

      • Razzball lead me to glory says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble: I looked at DraftCrunch but I think they only support the big two. I’m one of those weirdos who plays at Yahoo. I’ll definitely check out the razz/lineup lab collaboration.

  6. Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:

on that draugn “TD” there were two SF penalties in the same camera shot about 4 feet from each other, draughn facemask grabs a guy about to tackle him (and i saw that SAME thing called yesterday on somebody), and joyner is being held.

  7. Flowers misses his old glasses... but he's ok tho says:
    (link)

12 team standard dynasty, i have only these at WR (hearing DT might be limited now)
WR (start 3) DT, a.brown, hilton, rish matthews (not really used much on awful TEN passing game)
RB (start 2) elliot, forsett, t.west (grabbed both in case one shook out more), d-will, gordon, the butler (handcuff value).
    no flex.
options for dropping either (or both) of west /forsett are: steve and torrey smith, wheaton, woods, pryor, inman,

i’ll already be dropping m.bennett for one of those, what is waiver order (have witten and if bennett’s gonna be used like that EVEN when gronk is out i don’t need a backup TE at all in him)

      • Flowers misses his old glasses... but he's ok tho says:
        (link)

@Jay: sorry, i have t.west and bennett. i have bennett to CERTAINLY drop (for rogers first, then woods), and possibly a RB for another WR.

did you just hear s.young’s comment at the start of the 2nd half, “jeff fisher’s teams AREN’T known for undisiplined play” WOW, haven’t they led the league in penalties (particularly dumb ones, after whistle that kind of stuff) for like 3 years or something? hey steve, stick to signing them autographs while your mouth stays shut.
