Quarterbacks

  • Player: Cam Ward
  • Game: at Atlanta
  • Stats: 2/7 for 42 passing yards

I beg you not to look too deeply into Ward’s stat line after three drives in his second professional game. He was without Calvin Ridley and Tyler Lockett. He had a couple of incredible throws and made the correct read. The problem was that Van Jefferson, Elic Ayomanor, and Chimere Dike were not hauling in their passes. Ward has shown plenty of good things through two games, but if Ridley were to miss time, he could struggle to put up fantasy points.

QB Notables:

Jaxson Dart completed 14 out of 16 attempts for 137 passing yards with one TD and 5 rushing yards with one TD. He was the second QB to enter the game, leading two of three drives for TDs. Dart is the rookie QB preseason darling, and it’s hard not to argue with his stats. Many of his passes were high percentage, quick throws to his WRs, allowing for YAC. His one passing TD was a great play call on a toss-fake, hitting Greg Dulcich over the middle for a 20-yard TD.  Giants will have QB drama by midseason.

Jalen Milroe was the third QB to play for the Seahawks in Week 2, playing two drives. He was 3/5 for 46 passing yards while adding 18 rushing yards on five attempts. In the red zone, he missed two throws that led to a Seattle field goal. He’ll have to improve in that department to jump Drew Lock for the QB2 role. His rushing ability makes him intriguing for dynasty leagues, but a clear afterthought in redraft leagues.

Running Backs

  • Player: Ashton Jeanty
  • Game: vs. 49ers
  • Stats: Seven attempts for 33 rushing yards with one rushing TD, and one reception for two receiving yards

This performance shut up all his haters after a lackluster game last week. Jeanty displayed power, speed, and twitchiness. I love a good “truck stick.” He’s going to be a force in the league. His ADP is currently the 11th selection in PPR redraft as the RB5. I am not sure if that’s too low or just right. I highly recommend targeting Jeanty in ALL formats.

RB Notables:

RJ Harvey tallied four touches in 10 snaps on two drives in the starting unit, with JK Dobbins resting. He had three carries for 18 yards with one rushing TD and one reception for two yards. I will note that Harvey ran seven routes out of the backfield. He will have a role in Denver, even with Dobbins looming. There should be value with an ADP of RB24 within Sean Peyton’s offense.

TreVeyon Henderson rotated with the first team offense alongside Antonio Gibson, earning 60% of the snaps. Henderson posted four carries for 20 yards while scoring an eight-yard rushing TD on 3rd down. The arrow is pointing up for Henderson. Draft him while you still can!

Omarion Hampton was the only RB to play a snap (8) with the starters through one possession, finishing with two carries for 12 yards. He displayed impressive tackle-breaking skills with limited touches. His OC, Greg Roman, said he will rotate Hampton with another RB if Najee Harris is not ready for Week 1. Not sure if he’s bluffing.

Kaleb Johnson was much improved this week. He looked like a different RB hitting the hole with speed and decisiveness. He finished with 11 carries for 50 yards with one catch for nine yards.  He entered the game on the fourth drive with the 2’s. Kenneth Gainwell drew the start for the Steelers. Jaylen Warren rested with the starters.

Woody Marks ran with the 2’s. Dare Ogunbowale saw the third-down work with the starters behind Nick Chubb. Marks led the Texans with seven carries for 40 rushing yards.

Bhayshul Tuten was again the third Jaguars RB to enter the game, playing exclusively with the second unit. Tank Bigsby started and Travis Etienne Jr. shared a 50/50 split with the starters. Tuten ran for 35 yards on 10 attempts. The Bucky Irving comparisons do not appear to be panning out.

The charges against Quinshon Judkins were dropped, but he could face discipline from the league. He may play in the final preseason game for Cleveland.

New York Giants RB Cam Skattebo was out this week and is likely out for Week 1. I had high hopes for him, but it’s tough to know how much he’ll contribute at this point after missing this much time in camp. I have some concerns that this could be another Marshawn Lloyd situation.

Wide Receiver

  • Player: Emeka Egbuka
  • Game: at Pittsburgh
  • Stats: One reception for five receiving yards with one TD

Like other WRs in the preseason, the stats do not pop off the box score. Egbuka operated in the first three series, running 11 routes on 19 snaps with Teddy Bridgewater as the signal caller. His excellent route running and body control were on full display while securing a TD in the corner of the endzone. I am curious to see how targets are going to be distributed with this team, but his talent is real. His ADP is 104 as WR46.

WR Notables:

Tetairoa McMillian was held without a catch on two targets over three drives with Bryce Young and Andy Dalton. He was wide open on an out-and-go route but was severely underthrown by the Red Rifle. Nothing to worry about with his box score. Expect plenty of targets this season.

Patriots WR Kyle Williams posted three catches for 24 yards off three targets while playing eight of 15 snaps with Drake Maye as QB. Williams was able to get WIDE open on multiple plays, but was missed by his QB. I like him in dynasty over redraft, but he has late-round sleeper appeal in redraft.

Dont’e Thornton Jr. played ahead of rookie teammate Jack Bech for 13 of 15 snaps with the first team offense. Bech was on the field with the second team offense.

Jayden Higgins only played two of 14 snaps with the starters, playing behind Xavier Hutchinson. This was surprising as he is listed as the WR3 on the Texans’ unofficial depth chart.

Luther Burden III was held to playing with the second team as Olamide Zaccheaus was the Bears’ slot receiver with the starters.

The Browns signed Isaiah Bond after his charges were dropped. He was projected to be a Day 2 selection.

Travis Hunter did not play due to an upper-body injury.

Tight End

  • Player: Tyler Warren
  • Game: vs. Packers
  • Stats: One reception for 25 receiving yards

Another week and another impressive week for this burgeoning star.  His lone catch was a nice grab on the left sideline in the soft spot of the zone. He earned the most targets (3) of any Colts pass catcher over 15 snaps with Daniel Jones as QB. Warren was on the field for 14 of the 15 snaps with the starters. He’s going to get a lot of playing time and will be targeted by either QB who starts for Indianapolis.

TE Notables:

Colston Loveland finished with two catches for 26 yards on nine snaps with the Bears’ starters. He was targeted on the first play of the game, while splitting time with Cole Kmet in the first team offense. His value should grow as the season unfolds, but he may have limitations with Kmet lurking.

Mason Taylor made his preseason debut, finishing with one catch for four yards on a lone target. He operated with the first team offense, playing 13 of 18 snaps and running five routes with Justin Fields. Taylor could be the number two pass catcher for Fields.
