All of us here at @RazzballNFL will be providing our positional rankings and updating them throughout the offseason as news breaks. While we wait for free agency and the NFL draft to dominate our football brains, we are tweaking our initial rankings based on coaching changes. Head coach and Offensive Coordinator hires are essentially done now, so I’ll take one more opportunity to update my quarterback rankings while we wait for the next NFL event.

As my esteemed colleague, Matt Stiles, wrote yesterday, “We have officially completed the 2023 football season…but that does not mean we are done over here at RazzballNFL.”

Below, I explain why I moved up three QBs from my initial rankings. Also, further down, you’ll see my complete list of QBs for 2024. Let me know what you think.

Let’s jump right in.

The Impact of Coaching and Personnel Changes

  • Player: Justin Herbert
  • Team: Los Angeles Chargers
  • My Rank (2024 ECR): QB11 (QB10)

I wrote two weeks ago, “Justin Herbert will have a new Head Coach and new Offensive Coordinator next season. We already know the former (Jim Harbaugh) and are waiting on the latter.”  Now we know the latter. The Chargers hired Greg Roman as their offensive coordinator and playcaller.

This hire makes sense, as Roman has a long history with the Harbaugh brothers. Jim hired him to be the associate HC at Stanford, then moved with Jim to San Francisco as the 49ers OC for four seasons. Remember, Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick found success in that system.

He most recently spent time in Baltimore as the Ravens OC from 2019-2022. What happened in 2019? Lamar Jackson won his first MVP award, and Roman won the “NFL Assistant Coach of the Year” award.

You may argue that Roman is considered a run-first coach, which may be true sometimes. However, I’d argue it’s more likely that he knows how to play with the cards he’s dealt. In the case of the Chargers, the offense starts with Justin Herbert. So expect Justin Herbert to be in a position to shine for fantasy next season.

  • Player: Brock Purdy
  • Team: San Francisco 49ers
  • My Rank (2024 ECR): QB12 (QB12)

If you lead your team to the Super Bowl, you get a boost in my rankings. I moved Purdy up over Matthew Stafford and Tua Tagovailoa, primarily based on his playoff consistency. On the biggest stage through the playoffs and Super Bowl, he averaged just over 19 fantasy PPG, with three TDs and only one INT.

The debate will remain on Purdy throughout the offseason. Is he just a “game manager,” or is he one of the better NFL QBs in the league? For the time being, though, the experts and I agree he is our QB12.

  • Player: Derek Carr
  • Team: New Orleans Saints
  • My Rank (2024 ECR): QB20 (QB26)

I initially had Derek Carr as my QB23 but moved him up a few spots after the Saints hired Klint Kubiak as OC. I’m still ahead of the expert consensus rankings, which has him at QB26, but I feel justified with the boost. Why, you ask?

Kubiak heads to the Big Easy after most recently serving as the passing game coordinator for the 49ers. I’d say mentoring their young QB was successful, don’t you think? He’s also held similar positions with the Broncos and the Vikings, even serving as the OC for a stint in the latter case. I’m confident Kubiak will inject the same helium into the Saints offense, allowing Carr to be more productive in fantasy for us.
