“With the first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears select…”

Yes, Yes, Yes…the Bears selected Caleb Williams with the #1 pick.  We all saw that coming in the days before the draft.  We also knew Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye were going to be called to the stage soon thereafter.  The one real surprise was Michael Penix Jr. going #8 overall to the Falcons.  In all, we saw six QBs taken with the top 12 picks.  All this is old news by now.  You can read my analysis on those picks, written live during the draft, right HERE.

So, what about the other QBs taken on day two and three?  Statistically, we know some of them hit end up being fantasy relevant QBs and even others get a live roast on Netflix after they retire (check out Nikki Glaser’s set, it is worth the price of admission).  Although none will likely get a starting gig right away, although stranger things have happened, all of us fake ballers (especially in dynasty formats) need to be prepared for all scenarios.

So, who are the other QBs taken during the draft?  Let’s check them out and see if we can determine who will have fantasy relevance in the coming seasons.

The “Other” Drafted QBs

  • Player: Spencer Rattler
  • Team: New Orleans Saints
  • Drafted: Pick 150 out of South Carolina

After the rush of QBs on day one, we had to wait until the Saints picked in the fifth round (pick 150) to hear the name of our next QB.  Rattler has a connection with the #1 overall pick.  Rattler started as an elite prospect with Oklahoma but was replaced by Williams after 15 games.  Moving to South Carolina, he was able salvage some draft capital by posting a 19:8 TD:INT ratio with almost 3,200 yards passing in his final season.  The landing spot is a good one for Rattler, with a decent chance of securing the role as David Carr’s primary backup – on paper, at least.  Although, his chances of playing time are further clouded by the Swiss army knife of Taysom Hill.  Overall, I don’t see much of a reason to draft Rattler in anything but the deepest dynasty drafts at this point.  Sure, we can count on Carr to be injured at some point during the season.  However, unless Rattler comes in and dominates in camp and the pre-season, he’ll likely be carrying the clipboard all season.

  • Player: Jordan Travis
  • Team: New York Jets
  • Drafted: Pick 171 out of Florida State

Did the Jets pick the heir-apparent to Aaron Rodgers at pick 171?  That is probably the best-case scenario for young Mr. Travis as he continues to recover from an ankle injury suffered in November.  Frankly, there’s no pressure here for Travis as the Jets also have Tyrod Taylor on the roster.  Looking further down the road, he is a name to keep in mind in dynasty circles as he projects to be another dual-threat QB with upside playmaking skills.  By the 2026 or 2027 season, we may have something here.

  • Player: Joe Milton III
  • Team: New England Patriots
  • Drafted: Pick 193 out of Tennessee

After selecting Maye in the first, the Patriots went back to the well in the sixth to grab Milton III at pick 193.  Does this move sound familiar?  Perhaps like a RGIII-Cousins draft class by Washington a few moons ago?

Milton comes in with a strong arm and respectable speed in a big body (6-5, 245).  He’ll have some work to do to secure a roster spot, as the Patriots also have Bailey Zappe and Jacoby Brissett on the team.  If he does make the squad though, we may get a look at him catching the ball out of the TE position or even tossing the pigskin in certain gadget plays.  For that reason alone, he’s worth a rookie pick in dynasty leagues but I really don’t see him supplanting Maye anytime soon.

  • Player: Devin Leary
  • Team: Baltimore Ravens
  • Drafted: Pick 218 out of Kentucky

The Ravens used their compensatory pick at 218 to select Leary.  In my opinion, he’s another name that should be prioritized in dynasty leagues.  Following a college career at both NC State and Kentucky, which saw him throw at a 71:21 TD:INT rate and almost 7,500 yards over his final three seasons, he has a good chance of sticking with the Ravens.  There’s plenty of work to do here to mold him into a NFL QB but frankly, there’s no rush.  Lamar Jackson has four years remaining on his contract.  If he continues to grow at the next level, the Ravens, and dynasty fantasy owners, may have struck gold here.

  • Player: Michael Pratt
  • Team: Green Bay Packers
  • Drafted: Pick 245 out of Tulane

The final QB selected in the draft goes to the Packers at pick 245.  Make no mistake, Pratt is going to be a project, but the Packers saw enough to use a draft pick to secure his rights.  Pratt comes in as a four-year starter at Tulane where his QB abilities continued to improve throughout.  That trend will need to continue in the pros as he doesn’t come in with upside speed or arm strength.  Can you say, “game manager” here?  We know there’s usefulness for those type QBs in fantasy circles, but it doesn’t really get us too excited.  So, what I’m telling you is, don’t get too excited here.

Wrap-up:

That’s a wrap for me on the NFL draft.  I don’t have any of these five QBs in my top 150 rankings at this point but as you read, there are some intriguing names in the lot.  Dynasty owners would do well to stash one and see how it turns out over the next couple years.  For those in redraft leagues, even Superflex leagues, I’d stay away.
