Quarterbacks
- Player: Cam Ward
- Game: at Tampa Bay
- Stats: 5/8 for 67 passing yards
Ward was successful on his second drive of the game, targeting Calvin Ridley for three receptions for 50 yards. There was a lot to like with the first-overall pick’s performance. Ridley will see a TON of targets if this game provides a glimpse into what the Titans’ offense will look like this season. Ward’s value is mostly in dynasty, but I like him as a low-end QB2 in Superflex redraft leagues.
Notables:
Shedeur Sanders stole the spotlight after turning in a performance of 14/23 for 138 passing yards and two TDs. He added 19 rushing yards on four attempts. It’s just the preseason, but I am intrigued to see what happens with Sanders. He showed nice touch on his passing scores and played well overall. He’s worth the gamble later in the dynasty, but not in redraft.
Jaxson Dart might become the starter for the Giants this season. He completed 12 out of 19 attempts for 154 passing yards and one TD while tacking on 34 rushing yards. Of all the rookie QBs, I prefer his supporting cast in New York. I was very impressed with his poise and his 28-yard TD pass. Danny dimes, who? Do not sleep on his rushing ability. He’s a QB to prioritize in dynasty.
Running Backs
- Player: TreVeyon Henderson
- Game: vs. Commanders
- Stats: 1 carry for 18 rushing yards, 3 receptions for 12 receiving yards & a 100-yard kickoff TD return
Perhaps the most dynamic rookie skill position player this season. He’s tied to a committee with Rhamondre Stevenson, which is reminiscent of the Lions’ backfield of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Henderson is the running back I am targeting in rookie drafts, as I believe in what the Patriots are building alongside Drake Maye. He has RB2 value in redraft formats.
Notables:
RJ Harvey’s stats were not overly impressive, with seven carries for 25 yards. We witnessed his speed after bouncing outside for an 11-yard rush. I will add that he played ahead of JK Dobbins for those keeping count. This is a backfield to monitor as we approach the regular season.
Omarion Hampton suited up but did not play for the Chargers. This leads me to believe they have big plans for him in the offense. Take note and draft accordingly.
Kaleb Johnson had the worst performance of high-end rookie RBs from my perspective. He finished with eight carries for 20 yards, adding one catch for six yards. He appeared to have happy feet before hitting the hole multiple times and had dropped a pass out of the backfield. This is another RB room to follow.
Wide Receiver
- Player: Travis Hunter
- Game: vs. Steelers
- Stats: 2 receptions for 9 receiving yards
The stats do not pop off the box score, but there are enough positive findings to glean from. First, he played 91% of the Jaguars’ first team offense. He ran seven routes out of nine drop-backs for Trevor Lawrence. Out of the seven routes, five routes were out of the slot. His longest catch of seven yards was called back on a penalty. If he didn’t trip one catch while pivoting, he would have tacked on 10 additional yards. If Hunter continues to get playing time and targets from the slot, he will maintain his redraft value.
Notables:
Tetairoa McMillian appears to be the real deal for Carolina. He tallied two receptions for 43 yards while playing all 13 snaps with the Panthers’ starters. The play that stood out to me was McMillan’s excellent 30-yard go route reception over his right shoulder with the defender draped all over him. He’s a big play waiting to happen for Bryce Young. Are we too low on his WR28 ADP?
In Matthew Golden’s debut for Green Bay, he played 100% of the starters’ snaps with the offense. He hauled in one catch for seven yards. What’s telling is he has Jordan Love’s trust. On third and seven, Love looked Golden’s way on a slant route against CB Sauce Gardner. They didn’t connect, but he drew a pass interference to extend the drive. That’s always a good sign.
Tight End
- Player: Tyler Warren
- Game: at Baltimore
- Stats: 3 receptions for 40 receiving yards
I was impressed with Warren’s performance. He played all 20 snaps with the first team, drawing a 25% target share. He should be a big target for either Colts QB over the middle. Warren could push for a TE1 season with this type of usage. His redraft ADP as TE10 seems right for now, but I can see that improving as we get closer to Week 1.
