There is no offseason in dynasty fantasy football, and a lot is happening. Stefon Diggs is on the move, and it has implications for the NFL, your dynasty squads and my dynasty rankings. The Dynasty Diehards have you covered right here.

What is usually a calm period between the combine and the NFL Draft has heated up these last few weeks, with some fun and not-so-fun situations unfolding around the league. Of course, the biggest story this week has been the Houston Texans.

Every bit of league news has implications for your dynasty fantasy football quads. Let’s explore what this latest news out of Houston means for you.

  • Stefon Heads South For The Fall

You’d have to be living in a cave not to know that the Buffalo Bills traded embattled WR Stefon Diggs, along with a 2025 fifth and 2025 sixth-round pick, to the Houston Texans in exchange for their 2024 second-round pick. Nico Collins and Tank Dell managers shot into instant panic, but should they?

  • The Case For Not Panicking

Maybe I’m crazy, but I’m not worried about Diggs hurting Collins & Dell’s fantasy value, short or long-term. Diggs turns 31 in November and has had massive drop-offs in the second half of the last two seasons.

Despite those drop-offs, Diggs was still PPR WR4 (’22) & WR7 (’23). However, Julio Jones was PPR WR4 (’18) & WR3 (’19) before falling off in 2020, finishing as WR51.

Injuries were a factor in Jones’ decline, and Diggs isn’t Julio Jones. However, in an offense with two young, dynamic receivers, Collins and Dell, who have built a rapport with C.J. Stroud, Diggs might end up being the Texans’ WR3.

There’s been an argument that Stroud and the Texans’ offense simply cannot support all three being relevant based on volume. In 15 games, Stroud threw the ball 499 times for 4,108 yards. That’s an average of 33.2 attempts per game. If Stroud plays an entire 17-game season at the same pace, that’s 565 targets to be spread around in that offense.

Diggs has never seen more than 108 targets in a season. That’s unlikely to be what we see in 2024 in Houston, and even if we do, that still leaves more than 450 targets on the table for the rest of the offense.

  • Who SHOULD You Fade?

If you fade any piece of this passing attack, it should be Dalton Schultz.

In 2023, he was second on the team in targets (15.5% target share), catches and third in receiving yards and TDs. An offense with three quality WRs, there’s no way that volume is sustainable, especially with the addition of Joe Mixon, who can eat up some of those short routes Schultz thrived on (53.5% of his targets were on routes of 9 yards or less last season).

Schultz, who finished 2023 as the PPR TE10, has seen his volume decline over the last two seasons. After seeing a career-high 101 targets in 2021, Schultz hasn’t been over 90 in one season in Dallas and one in Houston. There will still be volume for Schultz, but the likelihood he sees enough to crack the TE1 tier in 2024  isn’t looking good.
