The NFL preseason officially kicked off this week with the Hall of Fame game between the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns. So, to celebrate and help you prepare for redraft season, we ran a 10-round, Superflex, half-point per reception (PPR) mock draft with special guests Tyler O of JWB Fantasy and Mike Faiella of Dynasty League Football and Trophy Smack.

Breaking Down the First Three Rounds

Round 1

As expected in a Superflex mock draft, the first four players off the board were QBs, with Patrick Mahomes leading the charge. However, the manager with the 1.04 veered away from QB, though not unexpectedly, and snagged Justin Jefferson, the first of two WRs off the board in RD1. Ja’Marr Chase went at 1.12 and was followed up by Bijan Robinson at 2.01.

Round 2

Unsurprisingly, Travis Kelce was the first TE off the board at 2.02. Surprisingly, Christian McCaffery lasted until 2.06, going after Anthony Richardson and CeeDee Lamb. Jonathan Taylor fell to 2.08, and Cooper Kupp was a steal for the manager with the 2.12 pick.

Round 3

Heading into the third round, I didn’t know what to expect. First, Saquon Barkley went 3.01, a far cry from where he was being drafted in 2022. Then, the following two RBs off the board were Nick Chubb and Breece Hall. This was followed by a mini-run on WRs, with Jaylen Waddle, Stefon Diggs and Tee Higgins all getting snatched up. The third round finished with two more WRs, Davante Adams and Chris Olave, coming off the board.

The Takeaway

The first three rounds were balanced. In fact, it was more balanced than I have seen in a half-PPR mock draft all offseason. Outside of the predictable run on QBs in the first round, managers in the draft were able to avoid panic and draft with a rational brain.

Only seeing one TE come off the board through three rounds is a testament to how bare the position is perceived to be. Most drafters in leagues are opting to chase late-round value with players like Mike Gesicki, Sam LaPorta and Dalton Kincaid.
