This week in the 2024 Top 150 PPR Rankings, I discuss the takeaways from preseason Week 2. This week I added in some tidbits on players who played with the backups if it’s notable and could impact the starter on the team. However, most of the information will be similar to last week, and focus more on the teams who played their QB. As a reminder, these takeaways will be less stat-based and more focused on which players were on the field with the top QB based on personal groupings etc. I outlined which QB1s did not play so you will know nothing about that team and LIKE IT!! JK… or am I….No JK! Keep following as I will have updates throughout the week on training camp news and notes as well.

What goes into my rankings? Every year, I start with a baseline of what happened the prior year. Then, I review key things that might have impacted the player’s production like injuries, bad coaching, or lack of talent around that player. Next, I review what’s changed heading into this season. This includes things like coaching or personnel changes, injuries, and training camp news and notes on how a player has moved up or down the depth chart.

Takeaways from Preseason Week 2

Team: Arizona Cardinals

QB1: Kyler Murray

Notable DNPs: Kyler Murray and the Cardinals starters did not play

  • Trey Benson got a lot of work with the backups in this game. Could mean James Conner is in line for a workhorse role.

Team: Buffalo Bills

QB1: Josh Allen

Notable DNPs: Josh Allen and Curtis Samuel

  • Keon Coleman and Mack Hollins played in two WR sets. Khalil Shakir might not be an every down player while Curtis Samuel could be a gadget guy in 2024
  • James Cook played on third downs and could be a three down workhorse

Team: Chicago Bears

QB1: Caleb Williams

Notable DNPs: D’Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson

  • Rome Odunze did get one snap in a two WR set, but it’s mostly D.J. Moore and Keenan Allen
  • Cole Kmet and Gerald Everett are still rotating a ton. Cole Kmet is on the do not draft list
  • Can’t say for sure, but in my opinion neither D’Andre Swift or Khalil Herbert will be the third down back. Herbert has looked good and there could be a rotation on early downs

Team: Denver Broncos

QB1: Bo Nix

Notable DNPs: N/A

  • Tim Patrick and Courtland Sutton operated in two WR sets
  • Tim Patrick looks healthy and seems to be a favorite target of Bo Nix
  • Jaleel Mclaughlin was the second back into the game and both Javonte Williams and Jaleel Mclaughlin played on third downs
  • The Broncos used a three man committee at tight end with Adam Troutman and Lucas Krull getting most of the work

Team: Houston Texans

QB1: C.J. Stroud

Notable DNPs: Joe Mixon

  • Dameon Pierce was used on some third downs, but Dare Ogunbowale came in on most third down plays. Joe Mixon hasn’t played a lot on third downs in his career so this could be a similar rotation in the regular season.
  • Stefon Diggs and Nico Collins are clearly the lead WRs playing  in most two WR sets

Team: Jacksonville Jaguars

QB1: Trevor Lawrence

Notable DNPs: Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars starters did not play

  • Tank Bigsby played a lot of snaps with the backups today. Travis Etienne could be in for a big role again in 2024

Team: Kansas City Chiefs

QB1: Patrick Mahomes

Notable DNPs: Marquise Brown

  • It looks like Xavier Worthy has earned his spot with the first team
  • Rashee Rice is operating as the primary slot WR and played in most two WR sets. He should be Mahomes favorite target
  • Carson Steele came in as the RB2 ahead of Prince and CEH

Team: Las Vegas Raiders

QB1: Gardner Minshew

Notable DNPs: Davante Adams and Brock Bowers

  • Alexander Mattison operated as the third down back
  • Michael Mayer operated as an every down TE. It’s important to note that Bowers did not play, but he seems to have earned a role in this offense

Team: Los Angeles Rams

QB1: Matthew Stafford

Notable DNPs: Matthew Stafford and the Rams starters did not play

  • Davis Allen played for the second straight week while Colby Parkinson rested with the first team

Team: Miami Dolphins

QB1: Tua Tagovailoa

Notable DNPs: Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and Jalyen Wright

  • The Dolphins used Jonnu Smith a lot in motion and got him easy receptions for YAC opportunities. He could be a gadget player as multiple TEs were used
  • Raheem Mostert is still operating as the lead back while De’Von Achane stayed in and played with the backup QB. Mostert is an absolute bargain in drafts

Team: New England Patriots

QB1: Jacoby Brissett

Notable DNPs: Hunter Henry

  • Veterans still got most of the reps with Jacoby Brissett and the first team included K.J. Osborn, Tyquan Thornton and Demario Douglas
  • Rhamondre Stevenson played the first eight snaps and saw work on third downs
  • Ja’Lynn Polk got a rep with Jacoby Brissett on the third drive. However, he could be a mid-season add vs. a player to draft

Team: New Orleans Saints

QB1: Derek Carr

Notable DNPs: Alvin Kamara, Rashid Shaheed, Juwan Johnson, and Kendre Miller

  • Chris Olave saw four targets on nine Derek Carr attempts. He looks to be getting more targets in the short and intermediate areas of the field

Team: New York Giants

QB1: Daniel Jones

Notable DNPs: Tyrone Tracy

  • Theo Johnson started and got the majority of the reps with the first team
  • Jalin Hyatt playing in most two WR sets alongside Malik Nabers
  • Darius Slayton did rotate in with the first team, but Hyatt took most reps on the outside with Nabers
  • Devin Singletary is operating as a 3-down back and is getting the goal line work

Team: New York Jets

QB1: Aaron Rodgers

Notable DNPs: Aaron Rodgers and the Jets starters did not play

  • Braelon Allen got a solid amount of work with the backups today. Breece Hall could be in line for a workhorse role in 2024.

Team: Pittsburgh Steelers

QB1: Russell Wilson

Notable DNPs: Roman Wilson

  • Jaylen Warren hurt his hamstring. The severity is TBD, but he expected to miss a few weeks and is questionable for Week 1
  • Pittsburgh mixed and matched players more than expected. Neither George Pickens or Pat Freiermuth were every down players

Team: San Francisco 49ers

QB1: Brock Purdy

Notable DNPs: Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and George Kittle

  • Brock Purdy played with the backups in this one. Not much to take from this other than Purdy is 100% healthy this off-season

Team: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

QB1: Baker Mayfield

Notable DNPs: Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers starters did not play

  • Bucky Irving played a lot of snaps with the backups today. Rachaad White could be in for a big role again in 2024.

Team: Washington Commanders

QB1: Jayden Daniels

Notable DNPs: Zach Ertz

  • Brian Robinson stayed in on the first two third downs and got most of the reps with the first team
  • Dyami Brown is operating ahead of Jahan Dotson in two WR sets
  • John Bates is operating ahead of Ben Sinnott. This is notable for Zach Ertz. The TE position continues to be utilized in the pass game
