This week in the 2024 Top 150 PPR Rankings, I discuss the takeaways from preseason Week 3.  Most of the information will be similar to last week, focusing more on the teams who played their QB. As a reminder, these takeaways will be less stat-based and more focused on which players were on the field with the top QB based on personal groupings etc. I outlined which QB1s did not play in Week 3.

What goes into my rankings? Every year, I start with a baseline of what happened the prior year. Then, I review key things that might have impacted the player’s production like injuries, bad coaching, or lack of talent around that player. Next, I review what’s changed heading into this season. This includes things like coaching or personnel changes, injuries, and training camp news and notes on how a player has moved up or down the depth chart.

Takeaways from Preseason Week 3

Team: Carolina Panthers

QB1: Bryce Young

Notable DNPs: Jonathan Brooks

  • Adam Thielen operated in most two WR sets and moved to the slot in three WR sets
  • Chuba Hubbard ran as the clear lead back and came in and got the goal in touches. He could return RB2 value for at least the first quarter of the season
  • Jonathan Mingo ran ahead of Xavier Legette and Mingo mixed in on some two WR sets
  • Rookie TE Ja’Tavion Sanders ran as the clear TE1

Team: Cincinnati Bengals

QB1: Joe Burrow

Notable DNPs: Joe Burrow and the Bengals starters DNP

  • Jermaine Burton is a popular late-round pick, but he continues to play strictly with the second team. He’s flashed and could be a factor in the second half, but it’s best to look elsewhere for a late-round sleeper

Team: Cleveland Browns

QB1: Deshaun Watson

Notable DNPs: Deshaun Watson, David Njoku, Jerry Jeudy, and Amari Cooper

  • Jerome Ford operated as a three-down back getting the first 10 snaps. D’Onta Foreman then got the next 11 snaps in a row. Both players received snaps on third downs. It’s clear that Ford is the lead back heading into Week 1, but it’s unclear if he will get more red zone work in 2024 than last season

Team: Denver Broncos

QB1: Bo Nix

Notable DNPs: Bo Nix and the Broncos starters DNP

  • Audric Estime played with the second team while Javonte Williams and Jaleel McLaughlin sat with the starters. If Samaje Perine is cut, this could be a two-man rotation early in 2024.

Team: Indianapolis Colts

QB1: Anthony Richardson

Notable DNPs: Josh Downs

  • Jonathan Taylor operated as a three-down back
  • Adonai Mitchell rotated with Alec Pierce on two WR sets
  • Mitchell continued to operate as the main slot WR which leads me to believe he might be the WR4 when Josh Downs returns

Team: Jacksonville Jaguars

QB1: Trevor Lawrence

Notable DNPs: Christian Kirk

  • Even though, Tank Bigsby mixed in with the first team, Travis Etienne operated as the clear lead back getting third down and goal-line work
  • Christian Kirk DNP, but Gabe Davis/Brian Thomas seem to be locked into two WR sets

Team: Kansas City Chiefs

QB1: Patrick Mahomes

Notable DNPs: Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs starters DNP

  • Training camp riser Carson Steele got extensive playing time with the second team. This could mean the RB2 spot is still open. Personally, this tells me Isiah Pacheco is locked in as the workhorse

Team: Las Vegas Raiders

QB1: Gardner Minshew

Notable DNPs: Gardner Minshew and the Raiders starters did not play

  • Dylan Laube started with the backups in this game
  • Alexander Mattison sat with the starters and looks to be locked in as the RB2 and third down back for the Raiders to start the season

Team: Los Angeles Chargers

QB1: Justin Herbert

Notable DNPs: Justin Herbert and the Chargers starters did not play

  • Kimani Vidal sat with the starters while other RBs like Jaret Patterson and Isaiah Spiller played this week. J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards are the frontrunners to start the season, but Vidal is now worth a stash in deeper leagues

Team: Miami Dolphins

QB1: Tua Tagovailoa

Notable DNPs: Tua Tagoviloa and the Dolphins starters DNP

  • Jeff Wilson got the first reps with the second team. Jaylen Wright did see extensive playing time later in the game getting 11 touches. This could mean bigger roles for Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane early on

Team: New England Patriots

QB1: Jacoby Brissett

Notable DNPs: Hunter Henry, Austin Hooper, and Rhamondre Stevenson

  • K.J. Osborn, Demario Douglas, and Tyquan Thornton got most of the reps on the first few drives.
  • Ja’Lynn Polk mixed in. Polk might not be a full-time player early on but could be a mid-season trade target or waiver wire pickup if he gets more work

Team: New Orleans Saints

QB1: Derek Carr

Notable DNPs: Derek Carr and the Saints starters did not play

  • Juwan Johnson returned to action. That is a good sign of his availability for Week 1

Team: New York Jets

QB1: Aaron Rodgers

Notable DNPs: Aaron Rodgers and the Jets starters did not play

  • Rookie WR Malachi Corley played with the backups. He looks to be far behind Allen Lazard, Mike Williams and Xavier Gibson to start the season
  • Braelon Allen sat with the starters and looks to have locked up the RB2 role

Team: Pittsburgh Steelers

QB1: Russell Wilson

Notable DNPs: Roman Wilson and Jaylen Warren

  • George Pickens was used as an every-down WR
  • Pat Freiermuth for the second week in a row was used in a rotation with Darnell Washington

Team: San Francisco 49ers

QB1: Brock Purdy

Notable DNPs: Christian McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk, and Elijah Mitchell

  • With only two weeks left to the regular season and Brandon Aiyuk yet to sign, Deebo Samuel and George Kittle should be moved up as it’s clear they will be featured early on in 2024

Team: Seattle Seahawks

QB1: Geno Smith

Notable DNPs: Tyler Lockett, Noah Fant, Kenneth Walker, and Zach Charbonnet

  • Jaxson Smith-Nijgiba is still operating as the main slot WR. Unfortunately, Tyler Lockett DNP so we don’t know if he passed him up in two WR sets. Either way, the Seahawks should play a lot more three WR sets in 2024

Team: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

QB1: Baker Mayfield

Notable DNPs: N/A

  • Rachaad White was featured in the passing game and got the goal line work
  • Chris Godwin was the main slot WR (YAY for common sense)
  • Jalen McMillian looks to have won the WR3 job. This is notable since Chris Godwin is in the last year of his deal
  • WR Ryan Miller played a lot of snaps with the first team. This could be a name to monitor in deeper dynasty leagues

Team: Tennessee Titans

QB1: Will Levis

Notable DNPs: DeAndre Hopkins

  • Treylon Burks played ahead of Tyler Boyd in two WR sets. Boyd is solely a slot WR in this offense, and this wont change even with DeAndre Hopkins potentially out to start the season
  • Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears did rotate series, but Pollard came back in on a fourth and one during the Spears drive. It looks like Pollard has short yardage and goal line work locked up
