2024 Fantasy Football Wide Receiver Busts

A “Bust”, for me, is a player that is currently being drafted in the first six rounds that I think will not return that value.

  • Player: Justin Jefferson
  • Team: Minnesota Vikings
  • Current ECR Rank (as of this writing): WR4

Before you blow up the comments or ask if I am drunk, please hear me out.  I love the player.  Justin Jefferson is arguably the best WR in the league.  You could make a case for Justin Jefferson at 1.01 for two straight years.  If you believe your eyes, then you must understand that J.J. McCarthy and Sam Darnold are not healthy Kirk Cousins.  Remember, the old football adage, “If you have two quarterbacks, you have no quarterbacks.”  Now, let’s get back to basics here.  If I am on the 1-2 turn with picks 12-13 and Jefferson is there, I will draft him without a second thought.  What I will not do is draft him ahead of Tyreek Hill, CeeDee Lamb, Ja’Marr Chase, or Amon-Ra St. Brown.  You cannot win your draft in the first round, but you can lose it.  I think taking Jefferson at 1.04 means you simply cannot miss with another pick until double-digit rounds.  That price, my friends, is too high for me.  I will fade the risk.

  • Player: Deebo Samuel
  • Team: San Francisco 49ers
  • Current ECR Rank (as of this writing): WR16

I love this football player!  The offense is Top 5.  It feels as if he misses at least two games per season regardless of the situation and I am not sure I am willing to grab him at WR16 when names like DJ Moore, Jaylen Waddle, Michael Pittman Jr., DK Metcalf, and Stefon Diggs are available in the same range.  Give me the alpha WR listed above while the team rostering Deebo must live with the uncertainty he brings throughout the season.  When Deebo hits, he can be a week winner.  When Deebo misses, he can be a week loser.  I will pass on the risk, again.

  • Player: Tank Dell
  • Team: Houston Texans
  • Current ECR Rank (as of this writing): WR27

Stop if you have heard this before.  I love the player.  What I do not love for Dell is three-fold.  (1) He is coming off a significant injury; (2) Many mouths to feed in this young offense (Nico Collins, Stefon Diggs, Joe Mixon, Dell, Dalton Schultz); (3) Trade for Diggs tells me he will command a ton of targets leaving Dell to carve out a niche’ that does not support WR27.  I will eagerly draft Tee Higgins, George Pickens, Christian Kirk, Calvin Ridley and possible Terry McLaurin over Dell in the same tier.

  • Player: Rome Odunze
  • Team: Chicago Bears
  • Current ECR Rank (as of this writing): WR40

Stud rookie WR coming into an offense that needs a lot of help in a division packed with offensive rosters.  Statistics coming out of University of Washington pop off the stat sheet.  Draft capital is very high.  Like my Tank Dell concerns, Odunze has many of the same issues heading into the season.  (1) Many mouths to feed in this offense (DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, D’Andre Swift, Odunze, Cole Kmet); (2) Signing of Keenan Allen tells me the Bears brass feels he is still a viable WR1-2 meaning he will see a ton of targets (until his hamstrings disappear forever); (3) Rookie QB that I am not sold on and a new OC.  I prefer, like I do with Dell, to focus on other WRs in the same tier while allowing someone else to buy the Odunze hype.  Let someone overdraft the former Husky standout.  You can always draft him in 2025 when he will be more valuable and probably discounted.
