Air Yards are the Gordon Ramsey of fantasy receiving stats. They tell us exactly what was right and clearly what was wrong with how a receiver performed in a given week. Often, it’s not easy to hear. But you as a fantasy manager need to pay attention to the under-the-hood numbers from your receivers instead of just blindly trusting the box score results, you donkey.

Each week, this column will dissect air yards for actionable info in the weeks to come. For Week 1, we will do a quick analysis of the list of 75 wide receivers who finished the week with at least 30 air yards.

Nothing quite like week 1. Wings, beer, football, o crap, I’m starting to sound like a BW3 commercial. Of course, after week 1, we have the crazy over reactions that accompany our first set of real data from results on the field. To help you make those tough calls, I’m going to break down player and team snaps each week, and hopefully give you a better idea who is for real and who was just a 1 week pop up. Each week I’ll be spending countless hours flipping coins in order to determine an order for my weekly rankings which will be published bright and early each Wednesday morning. It’s an elaborate round-robin coinflipping system for each position. Wide receivers alone take me a full Monday worth of coin flips. Fantasy Football Podcast: Week One-derful

B_Don and Donkey Teeth discuss the happenings from week 1. We discuss the fallout from the Ryan Fitzpatrick injury for all of the WFT weapons. Does it help anyone potentially or is just an all around loss? Podcast favorite Jerry Jeudy is going to miss some time as well, and we talk about who our priority is among Tim Patrick and K.J. Tuesdays at Razzball Fantasy Football are going to be “lit,” as the kids say. Although I’m not sure if the kids put it in quotation marks, I’ll have to check in with VH1 on that. Regardless, we have the one and only The Joey Wright leading off every Tuesday morning with his in-depth waiver wire advice column. Then Blair spins his MNF narrative with an eloquent Monday Night Football recap and finally, I’ll bring it up the rear with my rest of season rankings broken down by position. As for this first edition of rest of season rankings, I’m not one to overreact to a small sample size—that’s what she said! But we all know the saying: the early fantasy bird gets the big sample worm. It’s a double-edged sword. This is the middle that Buddha referred to. Don’t overreact, don’t underreact, react just the right amount. Like that porridge from Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I know you’re pick up what I’m putting down, you’re a smart dude and/or dudette, as the kids say. Anyway, here’s the updated positional rankings for the rest of the 2021 fantasy football season:

Jamaal is no Andy Warhol but….

Before I get started, it’s only Week 1 guys and gals. Aaron Rodgers won’t be held to 133 yards and throw two interceptions every week. The Titans will not be held to 13 points every game. Jameis Winston is not throwing five touchdowns every Sunday. Mark Ingram is not rushing 26 times for 85 yards and a touchdown…ever again? It’s a long season. It will take time for some teams to get into the flow while players and schemes will get figured out. Matchups also play a factor. That said, Week 1 should not be completely dismissed as there is information to be gleaned.

One performance that stood out to me on Sunday was from Jamaal Williams of the Detroit Lions. He rushed nine times for 54 yards and a touchdown while catching eight of nine targets for 56 yards.

I Am Jax’s Complete Lack of Surprise

Monday Night Football debuted for the 2021 season with a battle between Lamar Jackson and the Las Vegas Raiders. Oh, I suppose there were some other Ravens in attendance too. How many Ravens are still healthy and playing? Is Terrell Suggs still playing? OK, let’s recap: the Ravens have been haunted by a lower-body abduction spirit throughout the preseason — they lost 3 RBs and a cornerback for the season to various leg injuries. Now with a stable of veteran RBs that had been starring in an off-Broadway production of The Replacements (the movie starring the man known as John Wick, not the ‘ Mats [double parentheses — The ‘Mats are Gods]) and a lead RB sourced from their practice squad, the Ravens are simply trying to make it through the day healthy. Aren’t we all right now? Also, if you watched the Peyton/Eli commentary of the game on ESPN2, I’m basically Eli Manning just getting overrun in conversation every chance I get. Imagine me as confused Eli as we go forward this season. Overtime edit: this game made sense in regulation, where it was a largely defensive effort. Then the 4th quarter came and it turned into a Blumhouse Production of football nightmares and unlikely heroes. The Raiders had to make it one inch to win (that’s what she said!) and instead ended up turning the ball over in the end zone. Then LJax fumbled the ball. Then the Raiders accidentally iced their own kicker and ended up passing the game-winning touchdown to Zay Jones, a player who I have a history with and who Peyton Manning couldn’t even name.

Welcome to the very first Wright On Waivers. I will be taking over this column for the season and look forward to helping you navigate your way around the waiver wire with player suggestions to help both long and short-term needs. Your previous guide was indeed a great sherpa and wanted me to send along his best. If you have read any of my previous articles, you are aware I typically launch into these drawn-out movie tirades full of terrible analogies. I can assure you I will be focusing solely on your fantasy team this year and avoiding the proverbial opening twenty-one minutes and fifteen seconds of my favorite childhood film, Jurassic Park. Are those first twenty-one minutes important to the story? Yes. Yes, they are, but we really just want to see some dinosaurs. So, let us get to the dinosaurs.
