Offseason Draft Primer: If You’re Last, You Can Be… First?

Hey there Razzballers,

I’m back and refreshed after a grueling mock draft season and a nice offseason on the beach. But it’s time to hit the ground running and those fantasy football drafts are coming back up for everyone. In my column this week, I plan on breaking down what to do when you own the 10th pick in a 10-man league.

I know. It’s frustrating when you draw the draft order out of a hat and your name is literally the last one called. But guess what? I actually prefer to be picking last. I love it. And in fact, I think it gives you an advantage over the opposition. Let’s take a look at a hypothetical mock draft and see what you can get at picks 10 and 11:

Apple of My Ajayi

If you drafted Jay Ajayi at the end of the first round in 2017, you probably thought that you got the steal of the draft. After week one, you were convinced. It was all down hill from there and if you were lucky, you swindled a hopeful league mate for a useful player. Ajayi was eventually traded to the Philadelphia Eagles and didn’t see double digit carries until the final three games of the season. It’s also tough to find the end zone when Legarrette Blount is the red zone back. 208 rushes and 1 touchdowns just isn’t going to cut it…

Legarrette Blount and his 40 red zone carries have left for Detroit. In fact, Ajayi didn’t see a single carry inside of the 5-yard-line in all of 2017. The Eagles ran 77% of their offense out of the shotgun and that is exactly the offense that Ajayi can be successful in. According to Warren Sharp, when the Eagles were in the lead, Ajayi averaged 8.6 yards per carry from shotgun and when trailing he averaged 4.6 yards per carry. Obviously, with more of a workload these averages are sure to regress. But, with more volume, comes more overall fantasy production.

Undraftables: Quarterback Edition

The quarterback position is a lot tougher to tell readers to avoid certain players. There are 20-25 quarterbacks who have value to a fantasy roster every season. According to ESPN scoring, QB7-QB12 were only separated by 18 points for the season. That’s slightly more than one point per week if you count the playoffs. If you are a participant in two quarterback leagues or deeper leagues, the difference in scoring for QB16-QB21 was just over 5 points for the season.

With bye weeks, in most leagues with 14 or more teams, it’s necessary to draft a back up quarterback especially if you’re one of the last owners to pick a quarterback which is a pretty common strategy. That strategy, by the way, is one that I fully support. This makes a lot of quarterbacks viable options as a QB2 when you factor in bye weeks and tough defensive foes on the schedule. Another factor is that early July ADP seems to align with my thinking on individuals at the quarterback position. All I can do is tell you who I see myself avoiding this season and you can take it for what it’s worth.

Taking a Look at the 2018 Chicago Bears

Hello everyone! I hope you guys all had a great 4th of July holiday, filled with great food, great friends and family, and even better fireworks!

Before we get even further into July, where I will be releasing many different articles, rankings and podcasts with the rest of the Razzball team, I want to take a quick look at quite possibly one of my favorite fantasy football teams this year – the Chicago Bears.

Even though my heart lies with the Patriots, I do have to say, I have a bit of a soft spot for the Bears. I always like to see them do well, especially because as I was growing up in the past 18 years, they were always the lovable losers against the Packers. But this year, I believe things will be different. I think this year is shaping up to be a great one for the Bears. In fact, I think they could finish second in this division (ahead of the Packers but behind the Vikings), make it to the playoffs as a Wild Card team, and be one of the most productive fantasy offenses in the NFL this year.

So let’s get into it!

Sophomore Bump, Fortunette Results?

This piece of writing is going to hurt my soul and hurl my remaining brain cells right down a metaphorical volcano. Perhaps it’s the thin Colorado air at over 9,000 feet above altitude or the activities that are legal here, but I am starting to see myself drafting Leonard Fournette this season. If you read my preseason stuff or listened to the podcast last season, you know that I faded Fournette and made fun of his YPC and lack of production every week that the yards weren’t there. Every time he was listed as questionable or was ruled out Sunday Morning, I was thankful that it wasn’t my problem. The thing is there were not a lot of owners who were upset by the results when it was all said and done. He also looked like a pretty serviceable work horse in the playoffs. There were things to not like last year when it came to Fournette, but damn it, there is some promise for fantasy owners going into 2018.

Which Baldwin suits you best? There are many Baldwins. Alec Baldwin is the most successful of the Baldwin brothers. He’s in my favorite movie, The Departed. He plays the president on Saturday Night Live. He’s starred in a movie with Meryl Streep and other big movies like The Hunt For Red October. The man stayed busy on television as well, starring in 30 Rock and a role in Will And Grace. Along with acting, Baldwin also is a vegan. I didn’t know that.
