The NFL Draft is officially in the books, and it is time to begin the long journey that is the fantasy football draft season. In the first top 100 flex rankings, we try to weigh historical production with 2023 off-season changes. Our first instinct is to take the best players from 2022 and stick them at the top of the rankings. However, we have seen over the years that philosophy isn’t always the best.
Take the running back position for example. In 2022, only five of the 10 running backs drafted in the top 10 in positional ADP finished in the top 10 in PPR points per game. Players like Jonathan Taylor, Dalvin Cook, Najee Harris, Alvin Kamara, and D’Andre Swift all fell out of the top 10 in PPR PPG. In those specific examples, you can identify a few changes in the 2022 off-season that could have impacted their 2023 production. Taylor lost two offensive line starters and had a new starting quarterback. Cook saw a change in his coaching staff which led to a more pass-heavy philosophy in 2023.
That being said, we shouldn’t underestimate the power of continuity in fantasy football. Throughout the off-season, we hope to identify these changes to prevent us from drafting a bust this season.Â
