It Was a Close SKOL, But Minnesota was Cookin’: Thursday Night Football Recap

We finally got an exciting Thursday Night Football game, but it certainly didn’t look that way in the first half. In fact, the game started off so lop-sided that I’m sure people thought it was over and didn’t even stick around for the excitement. It was a tale of two halves as Minnesota dominated the first half and went into halftime with a 23-0 lead. In fact, they led 29-0 before Pittsburgh even got their first points on the board. But just like your Christmas decorations when you flip the switch, something clicked, and the Steelers just turned it on. They came all the way back and had a shot to tie the game from the Minnesota 12-yard line on the final play, but a beautiful pass that landed in the hands of Pat Freiermuth in the endzone was punched out by Harrison Smith to save the game. The Vikings were able to narrowly escape with a 36-28 victory over the Steelers.

2020 IDP Defensive Back Top 50 Rankings Update

As we rapidly approach the start of the NFL season, we are being inundated with reports out of camp. Leonard Fournette released. Fred Warner with Covid. Derwin James with a knee injury. Yannick Ngakoue traded to the Vikings. My typing skills are trying to keep up. This is the last of the rankings updates, top 50 defensive backs for 2020 IDP leagues, with just a week or so before opening day.

2020 IDP Fantasy Football: Top 25 Defensive Back Rankings

Defensive back rankings can be highly variable based upon your scoring system and even with that, there is a lot of year to year fluctuations especially at cornerback. If you read my DB drafting strategy article you know that my advice is to wait on drafting them. Yes there are some elite players, but in general, the production from this position varies from week to week based upon who the player is going up against and what you expect the game flow to be. This is the most streamable position in IDP leagues, especially if the league separates out the safety and cornerback positions.

The reliability of the linebacker position to get you points and the lack of depth at the defensive line position should lead you to drafting them first before going after defensive backs. The main exception is if you play in a very tackle heavy format where getting one the top safeties could be an advantage. Regardless, safeties remain the backbone of combined rankings as the volatility of corners on a week to week basis is what makes them streaming candidates.

What’s up all you IDP junkies? It’s J to the F-O-H here to cover Kevin while he is off in Argentina working on Kevin Jr.. I imagine him munching on a steak with some chimi-churri and sipping on some Quilmes. I will not be doing the rankings, that’s his thing (which will still be updated and found below), but I will be covering the RazzDP’s in lieu of his usual player highlights and buys. I have a confession, I am not as deeply knowledgeable as Kevin in this format, but I have been playing IDP leagues for about six years now. Now don’t get me wrong, I have strong IDP knowledge, just not as vast and kick-ass as Kevin. Strangely the RazzDP’s are only my second venture into standard scoring, for I always customize my leagues for more dynamic numbers and higher rewards. I prefer more love for quality defensive performances. But that’s another article where I lay out my preferred scoring for IDP players. Damn stupid tangent… or is that agenda? Please feel free to share any opinions about what kind of scoring you like. Or any other opinion about anything… as long as it’s clean.

Now that we’re done going through the Front Sevens, it’s time for the annual crapshoot of ranking Defensive Backs. Sure, guys like Harrison Smith and Eric Weddle are good bets to produce, but 2013’s consensus DB1, Morgan Burnett, barely made the top 20 DBs for the season last year. Injuries, role changes, and wild performance shifts all play more of a role for D-Backs than for any other fantasy football position outside of kickers. So rather than focus too much on one player or another, I’ll take a deeper look at strategy before diving into the rankings.
